today's funeral for a prince george's county police officer adrian morris. >> the 23-year-old was killed in a crash while he and his partner were chasing some suspected car thieves. kristin fisher joins us now from mitchellville where services for the officer are going to be held later this morning. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. just behind me right here is the woodstream church. this is where the funeral is expected to take place at 10:00 this morning. this funeral is expected to cause some major traffic delays in the area because hundreds, maybe thousands of police officers from all over the country are expected to come here to pay their respects to officer morris. the 23-year-old was born in jamaica but he grew up in laurel. he attended eleanor roosevelt high school. and then he joined the prince george's county police department in 2009. he had only been on the force for two and a half years when last week he was killedin a high speed chase on i-95. he was chasing two men accused of stealing a car when his car flipped. he was ejected and killed almost instantly. >> when you lose a police officer, especially in this kind of senseless death, you feel it in your heart. >> it's a thin, blue line. this is part of what binds us together. in our victories and in our tragedies we find comfort in each other. >> reporter: yesterday hundreds of fellow officers and their families began saying goodbye to morris at the viewing. you can expect the same kind of turnout, possibly more at today's funeral. prince george's county police say they are expecting officers to come from all over the country to attend this funeral. on saturday, even the redskins observed a moment of silence before their preseason game at fed ex field which is just a few miles away from prince george's county police headquarters. at a time like this of course everybody is focusing on officer morris, but you can't help but think about the two suspects that morris was chasing at the time he was cildz. so -- killed. coming up at 5:for, il-- 5:30, i'll have an update on those suspects and the charges they're facing. >> thank you. a prince george's county police officer is recovering this morning after he accidentally shot himself. a woman called police saying she was being attacked by what she believed was a rabid box so three officers -- fox so three officers showed up. the fox charged them. one of the officers was backing away from the animal when he tripped on some steps and accidentally shot himself in the leg. he also shot and killed that fox. students at one maryland high school will likely be seeing more police on campus this morning following a shooting on the first day of school yesterday. >> not the way to start off the school year. a 15-year-old suspected gunman is in custody and being questioned by police. meanwhile the lone victim is fighting for his life this morning after he was shot in the back. shots rang out yesterday just before 11:00 a.m. at perry hall high school just north of baltimore. moments before the shooting, 13- year-old sarah erpenstein felt something bad was about to happen and left the cafeteria. >> i mean, it's shocking. i didn't think anything like this was going to happen. i just really am afraid to go back. >> the father of the 15-year- old suspect says his son had been bullied at school. tropical storm isaac is making a slow trek toward new orleans now. the storm is expected to strengthen into a category for hurricane before it makes land fall either late tonight or early wednesday morning. evacuations are taking place in low lying areas near the big easy. many are confident that the new levees will hold. they were built or rebuilt actually after katrina devastated the gulf coast seven years ago. >> before katrina we were really vulnerable. now we're not because of all the levees and improvements that they've made. >> a state of emergency has been declared in mississippi 9news now. welcome back. it is 5:13 and 76 degrees. there's a couple of issues that we've had to deal with early this morning. first of all, i'm going to start off with the good news. no issues on the beltway. that construction near the bw parkway and route 50 was cleared up. there was an accident southbound bw parkway right near route 50. that should be in its clearing stages as well. let's take a live look outside and show what you it looks like from our mdot camera. here's what it looks like on 270 at father hurley boulevard. no issues as you come in from frederick down to the point where the lanes divide. we'll go back over to our maps. the issue on the northbound side of i-95 was actually a tractor-trailer accident right before dumfries. it's been moved to the shoulder but it left all this slow traffic for the early commuters northbound . /-95. luckily the lanes are open. hopefully that will clear out for you but in the meantime expect that to take a few extra minutes. we'll take a live look outside one more time. here's what it looks like 395 at the 14th street bridge crossing the river here. everything is fine. we'll be back in a few minutes with more traffic at 5:24. but first the weather. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. here we are with howard. what's happening with isaac right now? >> still a tropical storm. still 70 mile an hour sustained winds marching off to the northwest. probably will become a minimal hurricane later today, maybe later this morning. they've weakened the forecast as far as the strength to only 85, not 90 miles an hour which is a good thing. the weaker this is, the better. the less damage it will do. the problem is still going to be heavy rainfall down in louisiana and of course the slow movement may mean some flooding in spots. and there will be some issues. this is a hurricane and hurricanes do damage. so we know that. thankfully, though, it's a category one. it's not katrina by any stretch of the imagination. well, maybe a big stretch of the imagination. this is not katrina. katrina was a category 5, weakened to a 3. this is still a tropical storm and it has maybe another 12 hours before it can strengthen over the waters. on the northern edge of this, we're not really seeing the thunderstorms as concentrated as the southern edge. there's a chance still it will strengthen some. it's over warm water in the gulf of mexico. radar looks a little more impressive than the satellite because you're definitely seeing the banding here. looks like down here almost annual eye trying to form as it tracks to the north, north west. the 5:00 advisory has just come in from the national hurricane center. we're looking at the winds on this still at 70 gusting to 85. the pressure has dropped just a little bit to 977 millibars and still moving northwest at 12. the track earlier was right over the mouth of the mississippi river. now it's moved west, maybe about 20 or 30 miles. still expecting landfall sometime this evening here near the mouth of the mississippi river. overnight it moves into new orleans proper. look at that. wednesday at 1:00, 85 mile an hour winds. that's about the strongest we're seeing it. strongest they had earlier was 90. by wednesday afternoon 65 miles an hour winds with the storm near baton rouge. then the storm will move up toward monroe and little rock as it weakens to a tropical storm and then a tropical depression. then as we head into sunday, what's left of it maybe toward indianapolis and that moisture if you can imagine by monday of next week, lake day, we may get some of that possibly getting a little bit of the moisture even before then over the weekend. this morning mostly cloudy. a few showers. upper 60s to upper 70s with our bus stop forecast. as far as the day planner, the morning showers are going to be the key really over the next i think three, four hours. then by lunch time we're partly sunny. 85. a brisk northwest wind starting to kick up 10 to 15 miles an hour. 89 by 4:00. it's going to be dry. i left that there by accident. 89 by 4:00 p.m. with a high around 90. here's doppler this morning. you can see the activity stretching out from southeast pennsylvania, northern maryland in toward the shenandoah valley. winchester, you're almost done with the showers but they're just getting in now almost to germantown into frederick, their respects today at a fural for prince george's county police officer adrian morris. >> the 23-year-old officer was killed in a line of duty in a crash while chasing two suspected car thieves. kristin fisher joins us from punishleville where services for -- mitchellville where services for the officer will be held later this morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's still very qiewt at wood -- quiet at the woodstream church but this place will be packed with thousands of police officers if all over the country in just a few short hours. it's tough to lose any police officer, but especially one that was so young and with so much promise. officer adrian morris was just 23 years old. he'd been on the force for just two and a half years when last week he was killed during a high speed chase on i-95. yesterday hundreds of his fellow officers came together to attend morris' viewing. a lot of them said this could happen to any officer in the line of duty but why adrian? he was very well known, very well liked, an eager officer, excited to be protecting his community. he wanted to be a police officer his whole life and he died doing the job that he loved. morris was chasing two men suspected of stealing a car when his cruiser flipped killing him almost instantly. the two men he was chasing are now in police custody. 24-year-old kenneth mitchell was arrested the day aft crash and 23-year-old kevin neil turned himself in two days later. both have been charged with felony theft for allegedly riding in a stolen car during that chase. the prosecutors say more charges could be coming, charges like vehicular manslaughter. but no matter what these men are chged with, of course nothing will bring back officer morris. this fiewrnl recall here is expected -- funeral here is expected to start at 10:00 this morning followed by a procession. it could be about a hundred cars deep so expect major traffic delays in the area. mike, andrea? >> thank you, kristin live in have a lot of showers. only a stray shower at worst this afternoon. want to start with isaac. isaac, while it's not looking that great, especially the north half doesn't have the -- [indiscernible] -- it is showing signs that maybe it's trying to get a little stronger before making landfall which will happen in the next 10 to 12 hours near the mouth of the mississippi. want to show you the radar view. this looks a little more impressive as you can see some of the showers starting to wrap around the center of circulation. see the heavier thunderstorms approaching pensacola and mobile. looks like southeast louisiana will feel the brunt of this storm as far as the eye is concerned. but the rainfall, that may be headed up to southern mississippi. i've seen some computer projections of 15 inches or more over the next couple of daitz. here's isaac still a tropical storm, winds 70 miles an hour gusting to 85. that's the 5:00 a.m. advisory. with the movement at 12 miles an hour, that puts it at 10 hours or so from the mouth of the mississippi. maybe another 10 hours or so till it makes it up to new orleans which will happen overnight to tomorrow morning. it is forecast to strengthen just a bi. the landfall has a tornado threat as well. you'll notice the track of what's left of isaac moves up toward indianapolis by sunday morning. we potentially could see a little bit of moisture from that here later into the weekend, labor day unfortunately. there are a few showers out there but a mild start. upper 60s to upper 70s. sunrise still a ways off at 6:34. today mainly showers over the next few hours. by lunch time looking better, 85. there could be a stray shower this afternoon. winds out of the northwest 10 to 15. 89 degrees at 4:00 p.m. and 82 at 8:00. but for the most part watch out for that. on the inbound side of i-66 in virginia, things look great. no problems out of manassas into centreville. may find a few brake lights through that stretch and in the fairfax area trying to exit to the beltway. 66 is looking really good. same story on the dulles toll road. let's take you outside live if you're planning to head here on the inbound side of i-66 as i said still more driving privileges for some teens. according to federal government statistics, younger adults 20 and under are more susceptible to distraction. now parents can enlist the help of some apps to make sure their teens develop good driving habits early. the drive safely app for apple, android, back berry' blackberry and windows reads texts, e- mails out loud in real type. drivers can respond without touching the phone and they don't have to take their hands off the wheel. a family of four can use the app for $10 a month. the apple an android teen agree app let's parents use gps to keep tabs on their teen's driving and speed. it can track several young drivers in a family. the key to safe driving app works with hardware installed in a car. it blocks incoming text messages and phone raking in the dough according to a new survey by the american institute of certified financial planners. 61% of parents pay their child an allowance. and more than half start dishing out the money by the time their child turns 8 but only one percent of parents say their kids save their earnings. many parents may be missing out on the opportunity to teach their children good money management skills like how to budget for long and short-term goals. the bureau of labor and statistics saysed average person without a high school -- says the average person without a high school diploma your honor hypocrite to your children. if you're telling them to finish school and to pursue college, you need to do the same. >> reporter: for four years, hollis has been coming to the adult learning center part- time. >> coming in with a complex of not finishing school and knowing why you didn't but just not knowing how people would receive you. i don't have to worry about that here. i could be having a bad day and by the time i walk in the door, i'm greeted by the receptionist and it all fades away. >> reporter: academy of hope serves about 800 students in the district. students pay $30 a semester or they volunteer in exchange for enrollment. >> d.c. is ranked sadly number three in some of the lowest literacy rates in the country so we are two cities. a city of very well educated people and a city where we have a lot of people who are struggling with basic literacy skills ec -- lecester says academy of hope is often the first time many get a chance at a quality education. >> many had to leave school because of their families or had life situations where parents were not as great as they could be, substance abuse. >> reporter: hollis says earning her high school diploma is just the beginning to her academic goals. >> if all goes well, i'll be issued my diploma next month which is exciting. i'm actually looking forward to the pathways to college classes that are coming this fall.
