ramp is currently closed. hopefully this is going to be opened up here shortly. we'll keep an eye on it. other parts of the region checking out ok. we'll take a closer look to 295 headed northbound, it looks like everything is nice, clean and green as we track outside using our cameras, the northbound trip making your way through dumfries and the mixing bowl and beyond. no problems along the way. still over to -- still in virginia, i should say. 66 headed eastbound. it looks like we're in the green moving at speed from 234 past centreville to inside the beltway. no problems, very nice and quiet. your travel times on the outer loop from 95 over to 270, still looking at about a 10-minute commute and southbound 95, fro problems to report. still ahead, the very latest on the beltway tie-up. andrea, mike, over to you. police have a suspect in a hit-and-run crash with killed a woman and left a man in critical condition. >> the crash was in wheaton, maryland. police found a vehicle they believe was involved not far from the scene. it was abandoned. 9news now reporter surae chinn joins us now with more on what we know about the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. this was a tragic fatal hit and run. horrible accident that happened last night. i want to tell you that the couple was just coming home, crossing the street to go home. they had just been dropped off from a bus stop similar to this bus shed here, shelter. they were crossing the street. you see here that there is a pedestrian crossing. but the one where it happened, there was no crossing. when the couple had crossed the street here on veirs mill road. what we know is that the woman died from her injuries. the husband is fighting for his life. and the video here you're seeing is just signs of a very terrible accident. you see windshields damaged, the side -- driver side window hanging by a thread there. just damage everywhere. the husband again is fighting for his life this morning. the driver, we're told, did leave the scene. the car was found a couple of miles away. a few hours later, the driver was not inside. they found the driver later on. he was taken into custody. but released. he has not been charged as of this morning but he did leave the scene. this could be an investigation that takes weeks long. but he hasn't been charged this morning and we'll have more information as we come about throughout the morning but that's the very latest. tragic accident. a couple coming home from a day of shopping crossing the street and one woman died. husband fighting for his life. back to you. >> surae chinn reporting live from wheaton, maryland. also, while you slept, the search goes on for more survivors and victims of sunday night's massive tornado in joplin, missouri. >> we got video from one of our storm chasers. he do the to joplin less than 30 minutes after the tornado tore through there. he captured some of the heartbreaking scenes along the highway and some of the neighborhoods where everything was basically just obliterated. people looking for loved ones, others helping the injured get to the hospital. you can see the hospital was even heavily damaged there. >> first of all, we need to make sure we can cover the entire area. we want to make sure if folks are underneath the rubble and alive, we can find them. >> rescuers have pulled 17 survivors from the rubble but the current death toll is 116 and is expected to climb. searchers clear more debris from homes. a father accused of killing his daughter will stay in jail for now. a judge ordered 49-year-old rodney mcentire held without bond. d.c. police say he stabbed his daughter, ebony franklin, 15 times last november then dumped her body into a trash bin. prosecutors say cell phone records and dna evidence prove mcintyre was having a sexual relationship with his daughter. a judge has ordered a 15- year-old accused of shoot at d.c. police to be held by the department of youth services. authorities found the teen on a rooftop saturday on crittenden street and he refused to drop the gun he was holding. one officer was hit three times in the exchange of gun fire. the teen was grazed by a bullet. he's charged with armed assault with intent to kill. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu will address a joint meeting of congress today. he spoke to the american israel public affairs committee last night about why he believes middle east peace efforts have failed. >> this conflict has raged for nearly a century because the palestinians refuse to end it. they refuse to accept the jewish stakes. >> president obama also spoke to the aipac before leaving on his trip to uniform. the president has proposed using the 1967 borders of the formation of 12,331. the nasdaq was off by 44 and the s&p 500 was down by 16 points. >> chrysler's ceo says his company will save $300 million in interest per year when it repays government loans today. the company will repay roughly $7.5 billion in loans to the u.s. and canadian governments. chrysler is taking out new bank loans and selling bonds to make the payment. about $10.5 billion from the u.s. to survive bankruptcy in 2009. after today's payment, it will still owe the u.s. government about $2 billion. if you use yahoo!'s e-mail service, it is soon going to look different. the company is giving the e- mail service a face-lift to better appeal to people who are increasingly using facebook, twitter and google. changes will show up for the 277 million e-mail users in the next few weeks. the comes into the beltway. over toward tysons, out toward even barryville seeing a couple of light sprinkles into fauquier and prince william county as well. very light stuff this morning. temperatures, they're not light at all. 69 and it is a muggy 69 in washington. low 70s pax river. 72 winchester. 70 in hagerstown and cumberland at this hour. that tells you what sort of an air mass we're in. south winds at 5. dew point is in the 60s. giving us that relative humidity of 93%. if you want to take a run, there will be a morning, you'll get a good sweat from this. showers and storms firing at this hour across the central part of the country. some in kansas and nebraska. more strong storms in arkansas moving toward tennessee. it is back in oklahoma and kansas today, north texas, right here, they've got a high risk for severe storms. likely going to see tornadoes there as well. another day for the storm chasers to be out there. people will be anxiously watching the skies. for us, a few storms across parts of west virginia. we'll see how much of this can hold together as it moves off toward the east as we go through the next few hours. we may see a passing sprinkle or two over the next few hours through the mid to late morning. this afternoon, we'll see if anything will develop by us. right now, anyway, computers are keeping it away until tonight when they bring out some showers and storms especially to the southern suburbs toward tomorrow morning and tomorrow, well, another day of some warmth and a chance for an afternoon thunderstorm. kind of a pattern we settled about that. still ahead, the latest on the outer loop accident near d.c. 295. i'll have that at 5:39. over to you. rescuers are looking for more survivors this morning in joplin, missouri. >> searchers found ten people alive in the rubble late last night. despite that success, authorities expect the death toll to climb past the current number of 116 lives lost in sunday night's tornado. entire neighborhoods are flattened and many who lived through it are still shaken. ran to the bathroom. i got the kids in. swooped everything off the bed and put a mattress over us and held it down really tight. >> staffers at st. johns hospital are being credited with saving some 180 patients there even though they had, at most, 20 minutes warning to move all of them. unfortunately, this part of missouri is expected to get more severe weather today. this morning, montgomery county police have questioned a driver after a deadly hit-and- run crash last night in wheaton. a woman and a man had just gotten off a bus near the intersection of veirs mill road and center hill street when they were hit by the vehicle. the woman has died. the man has life-threatening injuries and is in the hospital. surae chinn is live at police -- surae chinn is in wheaton with more on the investigation. surae? >> reporter: that's right, mike. we're actually here at the scene where it happened. and the couple was just on their way home. they were crossing the street. they got dropped off here at a bus shed similar to this one just down the street here when the woman and the man were hit. the woman succumbed from her injuries. she died. the man fighting for his life. on top of that, the driver left the scene. we have captain paul starks with montgomery county police department to tell us what happened and where does the investigation stand now? >> well, right after the collision, within an hour, circulating officers found the vehicle and soon after, found the driver and the passenger in two separate locations nearby. the driver did offer a sample of breath for alcohol. those results will be released later at the conclusion of the investigation. i believe we're looking at some of the video, signs of a terrible, terrible accident. windshield damage, the side mirror as well. but you guys also released the name of the driver, pierre michelle, 29 years old from silver spring. no charges at this point. >> no, it is our protocol to complete the investigation, present the results to the state's attorneys office and then members of the state's attorneys office decide what charges, if any, are appropriate in cases like these. >> we understand as well, the pedestrians were crossing the street not at a crosswalk. >> no, the bus shelter at veirs mill road and centerhill street does not have a crosswalk. >> ok. thank you, captain. paul starks with montgomery county police. this is a very busy intersection. people are getting picked up, dropped off here at veirs mill road at this bus stop. so, a very busy intersection at 9:40 at night. also busy but a lot darker as well. the investigation continues. we'll have much more as the morning and the day progresses but plane crash that killed ted stevens and four others. the national transportation safety board is going to issue its report on the crash later today. the small plane was taking the men on a fishing trip in a remote part of alaska when it went down. the victims included lobbyist bill phillips of germantown, maryland. his son was one of four survivors all from the d.c. area. others are jim moorehard of alexandria and sean o'keefe and his son who live in loudoun county, virginia. sheriff's deputies are investigating an attack along a popular jogging trail in loudoun county, virginia. around 1:00 sunday afternoon, two women bicyclists stopped to take a breather at mile marker 22 along the w and the od trail in sterling. that's when a man snuck behind them and groped one of the woman. both chased the suspect into a nearby community where he escaped. people we spoke with were surprised it happened, especially during the middle of the day. >> i'm kind of shocked. i believe this is a pretty safe area. every you go, there are people on bicycle and walking and jogging. >> officials say the suspect is a hispanic man in his 20s or 30s. he was wearing a brown shirt and black pants with white strips down the sides. if you live or work near arlington national cemetery, don't be surprised if you hear pretty big booms this morning. a military spokesperson says troops at the cemetery will be firing off ceremonial cannons at 7:00 and at 8:00 to give you a heads up. 7:00 and 8:00. ceremonial cannon fire this morning. >> time for another your money report. >> jess is back [ laughs ] [ all ] what's in your wallet? weather first time now coming up on 5:45. mr. howard bernstein is here and we're concerned about flooding today. >> little coastal flooding once again. we have a lot of these advisories and flood warnings over the last few weeks. some of the predictions about global climate change are correct over the next few decades, there will be a lot more of this and a lot of seawalls going up. let's get you going with a look at the coastal flood advisory until tomorrow morning. we're concerned with times of high tide. all of the areas on the chesapeake and the tidal potomac, tides running one to two feet above normal. alexandria, next high tide at 2:46. colton's point about 9:10. over to annapolis this morning. chesapeake beach about 9:00. keep that in mind. your momslikeme.com bus stop forecast, you know when you send the kids out this morning, consider it a july morning. shorts, short sleeves, mostly cloudy, stray shower. 5:49 on the sunrise. just a few minutes from now. we do have the mostly cloudy skies. at times, a little bit of sunshine. 9:00, 74. we could see a passing shower in spots this morning. maybe a rumble of thunder. 11:00, 80. by 1:00, we're in the middle 80s. we'll watch and see if we can bubble up any thunderstorms. the models are a little touch and go on whether or not we'll see anything this afternoon versus tonight. i think there is a better chance. mid-80s for 3:00 and also for 5:00 p.m. winds out of the west at about 10 to 15 miles per hour. look at this on our doppler radar regional ones composite here. light showers moving toward us falling apart. new thunderstorms here, not far, north and east of charleston, west virginia. pulling eastward. they would be tracking toward d.c. if they hold together over the mountains in the next few hours. right now, tracking toward us, some very light sprinkles. pushing through chantilly and dulles and reston and herndon moving east right now. the stuff is really light here even around frederick, you may have one or two on your windshield. 69 this morning. the whole area up through new york, down to norfolk, upper 60s and low 70s. locally, we've got 66 in haymarket. that's one of the cooler spots. in washington, reagan national, 69 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. dew points 67. that's why it feels so muggy out there with that relative humidity at 93%. what we're going to watch, potentially, more storms coming at us, not just this afternoon but for the next couple of days. this pattern is not going to change much. above average temperatures with the threat for some strong storms. 88 today. 86 tomorrow. thursday, the hottest day around 90 as we head toward friday, saturday and sunday. scattered to mainly afternoon storms and warm, well up in the 80s. >> yellow light stays on. we have a couple of things we're keeping an eye out on. you'll want to use caution. the outer loop ramp to d.c. 295 impassable to go northbound on d.c. 295. we're hearing from officials they hope to have this cleared up and opened back up within the next 15 minutes, we'll let you know if that happens. taking you over to howard county, 70 at meritsville road going in both directions, drivers thought way, you'll lose a left lane. that's due to the crash activity. we're already hearing eastbound travelers, you're experiencing delays to stack up beginning around route 40. over to 66 we go, hey virginia, 224 to 28, we're below speed. approaching 123, 395 drivers, we're watching the volume build past duke street. no significant delays. we're also tracking your travel times in maryland. let's begin with the outer loop. from 95 to 270, only about 10 minutes. 95, no complaints headed southbound and the sip moving to crossing that wilson bridge. still ahead, an update on our accidents in the region and your maryland roads at 6:00. andrea? >> thank you, angie. making news now at 5:49, a chicago man who pleaded guilty to scouting targets with the 2008 mumbai attacks which killed 160 people including six americans claims the pakistani spy agency helped plan the attack. david headley testified in chicago the terror group that carried out the attacks had support from the pakistani intelligence services. headley, again, is testifying against another defendant accused in the attack. today in orlando, florida, opening statements are expected in the murder trial of casey anthony. anthony is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, caylee, back in 2008. if convicted, she could get the death penalty. today, the national weather service will be checking to see whether it was a tornado that caused damage in parts of western pennsylvania. a number of buildings are in need of repairs after severe storms rolled through last night. there are no reports of any serious injuries. the department of u.s. agriculture is testing possible solutions for getting rid of stinkbugs. they're doing it on maryland farms. robert black co-owns an orchard. researchers have been combing his property in search of spots where they believe stinkbugs hibernate. they've been dissecting stinkbugs every week and noticing the loss of fatty tissue built up for hibernation. the methods to kill them in the fields hasn't worked. black has this advice for people who find them. >> please don't let them out of your house. kill them because they're going to go to one of our farms. >> last year, stinkbugs destroyed 37 million dollars worth of crops in just four mid- atlantic states including maryland and virginia. the usda is trying to figure out why they are attracted to some fruits and not to others. today, some redskins are meeting for a players only practice and they should have more to go on this since a few of them got play books during the one day last month when the nfl lockout was saved by a judge. with the practice facilities closed to them and no coaches available, dave owens found six players who turned to a unique way to get their butts in gear. >> it is the only time you'll see the teammates relaxing because for the next hour -- it is about to be a grind. >> reporter: this saiddy mason's kitchen. today, non-traditional work is on the menu. once he starts barking -- >> don't let that thing break you! >> you're on his time. >> fireman's carry, pull-ups, pushing, pulling, nfl athlete?
