50 at noon. by noon 80 degrees and only for a high of 65 degrees. beautiful weekend on tap. more in a few minutes. angie? >> looking forward to it. thank you. we begin with a traffic alert in takoma park. a tree in the roadway is taking away 410 in both directions between see star and park avenues. the way to get around it is to use piney branch over to 195 and reverse it if you are going westbound. take you out and zoom in to the beltway. move it outside and show you how everything is clean and green. drivers are moving at speed. here's your live shot to prove that. this is the live condition at university boulevard. back to our maps. we next take you over to 270 southbound. if we can get back to the graphics and zoom in. no problems. we will move it outside on the southbound lanes out of frederick, all the way do to the spur. -- to the spur. coming up, a realtime look at the dulles toll road in virginia. police are searching for a serial burglar in northern virginia. so far, there are 105 cases. 52 of those are burglaries spanning three counties. police believe one person is committing all of those crimes. brittany morehouse is joining us from vienna, virginia, where residents are on edge. >> the last case was here in vienna. 105 cases overall and four in great falls but last night, nevertheless, despite only four cases, people gathered to get information from police. they were concerned and had many questions and they got some answers. >> we feel like this is -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: the burglar has sucked up all kinds of resources. >> task force was formed and they communicate on a regular basis. >> reporter: despite that communication, community members learn that police have very few leads. >> the majority of cases are unlocked doors, unlocked windows, people that either leave the back door open but the screen is shut because of the nice weather. >> what can people learn from the cases how can they be sure they are protected. aside from locking your doors, don't ignore small signs of something strange. the majority of houses had multiple people living inside. >> people would hear noises, people walking around or someone walking around but they are discounting it thinking it is nothing and the next morning they realize they have been victimized. the message we want to stress tonight is to the community is if you see or hear anything suspicious, please do not hesitate to call us when you first hear or see it. >> reporter: that was captain debra burnett from the police department. she could not emphasize this enough. they really believe it will be tips from the public that will lead them to an arrest. >> thank you. remember a few days ago when metro officials were considering lowering the cost of those smarttrip cards they are now backing away from the idea and that's according to the "washington post." it is reporting the proposal will allow customers to manipulate the system. under the plan, commuters would still have to pay $5 for a smarttrip card but half of it could be used to pay for a ride. metro says it would have lost a million dollars each month. as the search continues for the gunman who murdered a dpw worker there's tighter security in the lot where the shooting happened. 51-year-old larry hutchens from suitland, maryland was shot along with another co-worker on wednesday. hutchins was killed. the other worker survived. police brought in portable spotlights to brighten up the dark lot and increase patrols around the area. michelle rhee says she's looking for a job where she can have an impact and be closer to her fiance. chancellor rhee stepped down on wednesday as head of the dc public school system. she is engaged to sacramento mayor kevin johnson, a former nba player. the justice department is asking a federal judge to allow the don't ask, don't tell policy on gays right now. it is two days after the judge ordered the pentagon to stop enforcing the ban on gays from openly serving. doj wants to suspend the ruling while it appeals. the controversial policy was a big topic at president obama's town hall here in dc. he spoke to a group of young voters at mtv studios on thursday. he said he believes the ban should end but only at congress repealing it. >> it would have to be done in a way that is orderly because we are involved in a war right now but this is not a request of whether will end. this policy will end and end on my watch but i have an obligation to make sure i'm following -- >> the president did not discuss the justice department's appeal but said he believes they have enough votes in the senate to overturn the ban. the house has already approved the change. time for another "living $mart" report and jessica doyle has a preview of the day ahead on wall street. will it be a happy friday on wall street?
