Impressive, but again, we cant really get hung up on that either, because ironically the storm will intensify and become in some ways a stronger storm after it becomes extra tropical. Heres the track. Sunday, 8 00, were looking at a category 1 way out to sea, seem east of hatteras. Thats not so bad. Its the left turn thats the problem and it is still forecast to make a turn. Its a little further north now, which is good in southern new jersey and extreme northern delaware. We get into monday, 8 00 hour. Then it rolls right in through southeastern p. A. Im not sure its going to accelerate into new york state. It may hang in South Central pennsylvania. We know the wind fields are so big we are still looking at a hit. Maybe not a direct hit, but i tell you what, the storm is so big, its just a question of just how bad its going to be. Scenario one stays out to sea, not going to happen. No wind, no rain. Scenario two, it goes north of new york city. We get an inch of rain, probably not going to happen either. The two most likely scenarios, 3, maybe a 40 chance. We get 14 inches. Winds 2040. The worst scenario would be scenario four, 30 chance it comes across thnorthern bay and just north of town. Then we get 4070 Miles Per Hour and 28 inches of rain. Ill be back with a full forecast. Well talk about the impact of the storm and the timing. Thanks, topper. Tonight, some parts of delawares beach resorts are under a mandatory Evacuation Order. The state is telling people who live in parts of bethany, dewey, all other coastal areas to move out by 8 00 tomorrow night. The word from ocean city, maryland, is anybody planning to visit should postpone their travels and people who live in the downtown area should be prepared for evacuation. Rain and winds from the massive storm have been pounding the North Carolina coast. Hurricane sandy is threatening some 60 million americans in the eastern third of the united states. Residents in maryland and virginia are spending the weekend getting ready for this storm. At rfk stadium today, residents picked up sandbags from the public works department. They were also piled up in old town alexandria. Residents also headed to Hardware Stores and grocery stores. Some found they were already too late. Looking for a flashlight, because im really not sure what kind of flashlights i need. And i didnt see exactly what i want here. The majority are sold out. Yeah, most are gone so maybe were going to have to go somewhere else and look. Maryland, d. C. And virginia have already declared states of emergency. D. C. Officials will be giving out sandbags from 10 00 in the morning until 6 00 tomorrow at the tacoma Park Recreation Center in northwest. We havent heard yet from maryland or virginia. Joining us right now by phone is mayor sam cooper. Mr. Mayor, thanks for joining us. I want to ask you, what are you expecting from sandy . Flooding, wind damage . Certainly the winds will be the big news story i think here. A lot of beach erosion. I dont expect a lot of tidal flooding but potentially from rainfall if we get the worst of that. Could be an issue on some of our streets. Mr. Mayor, tell us about this evacuation. How many people are we talking about and what parts of the beach are we talking about . Yeah, the governor issued a limited state of emergency along with an Evacuation Order at 5 00 today. They set the line at 3 4 of a mile back off of the ocean. I dont think people in rahoba should probably focus directly on that line because it would cut through properties and stuff. But its, you know, a few hundred people probably at this point in time. I expect most of the people who are visiting over the weekend. We had a big festival here this weekend. The sea witch festival. And they had a great day today, but unfortunately, all the activities have been cancelled for tomorrow. I would expect the people who are visiting the area to filter out tonight and will continue to do so in the morning. Hopefully well be left with just the core of people who live here come tomorrow afternoon. Right. And a bunch of us reporters. Mayor sam cooper, mayor of rahoba peach. Thanks for staying up with us tonight. Sure. Right now weve got breaking news in northwest washington. Two metro buses have collided with a car that was being pursued by police. Ken molestina is on the scene. Whats the latest there . Reporter well, yeah, bruce, the car that smacked into these buses has been removed. The buses still here. You remember this is the second time in about a week we had one of these violent, bizarre crashes involving a car and a metro bus. This one happened just before 9 00 today. You can see behind me. These are the two buses involved. The cadillac that smacked into them has been removed. Ive been speaking to witnesses, neighbors, people who saw this, even a spokesman with metro. Everybody describing what happened like a scene out of the movie. Wait until you see the video were about to show you. Youre not going to believe this. This is what used to be a cadillac deville. A metro transit spokesman tells us d. C. Police were chasing him on New Hampshire boulevard. The cadillac then slammed into a number 64 bus coming south on hampshire boulevard. The force of that collision caused the cadillac to go into a violent spin, in turn slamming into a second bus. That bus was headed north on New Hampshire. Ten people in total were taken to the hospital. Ten people from the different buses with nonlifethreatening injuries. The driver of the cadillac, the person chased by the police, suffered two broken legs. He was taken to howard hospital. Spoke to a anybody whsaw it all happen. Heres what he had to say. First of all, i saw police everywhere. It was very confusing at first, because there was so many police. Sirens were happening. It was terrible. A live look right now. This is New Hampshire avenue and ingram street northwest. These two buses have been here for a while. Again, the cadillac that was involved was taken out of here. Police still on the scene. Metro transit officials also still on the scene. Miraculously, everyone who was hurt here suffering from what were being told are nonlife threatening injuries. Everyone did survive this. I put a call in to d. C. Police to learn more about this alleged chase that they were involved in. No one answered the phone, but well stay on top of it to find out exactly what happened out here. These are questions d. C. Police will have to answer and figure out what was taking place and if it was the result of some sort of highspeed chase through residential streets out here. We know d. C. Police have a policy of not chasing in the city. Well get back to you on that. Tonight the town of ocean city, maryland is entering phase 1 of operation asking people to not visit until after Hurricane Sandy has passed. Earlier today residents snapped up plywood, generators and flashlights. People should have nonperishable food for three days and one gallon of water per person at least. We have concerns of some of the effects of the storm, mostly i think the possibility of flooding in some of the low lying areas of down. Where we are, theres a lot of areas of trees right outside of ocean city, so were taping our windows. Were taking this very seriously. We are. Ocean city Officials Say theyll have an update on the storm situation there tomorrow at 9 00 in the morning. The threat of a storm and the president s urging brought huge crowds to polling places today to vote early. Election staff in maryland and the district were overwhelmed by the numbers they saw. Long lines were reported in both montgomery and prince georges county. One voter told 9 news now it was an hour and a half wait at the Montgomery County executive office building. In the district, early voting in the wards actually started today. Election official reports they moved Voting Machines around to meet the unexpected. Armando trull has more on the first day of early voting. Reporter many voted early because they wanted to avoid sandyrelated drama. Because of sandy, we wanted to make sure we didnt get shut in, so its very important to vote, so we wanted to make sure we had our say. Reporter others were hoping to avoid long lines on election day november 6th. Something may happen on the 6t reporter regardless, it was quit a busy day and most of the precincts opened for early voting in Montgomery County. Theres a lot of people coming up. You know, two hours or more wait. Reporter more of the same in the district. Do you think the storm has a lot to do with it . It his a lot to do with it. Everybodys trying to be in before the storm comes. Everybodys trying to vote now, because monday we dont know. Reporter the Columbia HeightsCommunity Center was packed with voters cooling their heels. But not everyone was willing to stand around and wait. About two hours. Two hours . I think it speaks to the spirit of america. The spirit of volunteerism that is in this country, and our ability through usa weekend magazine back 22 years ago to really insight that spirit in a lot of people across this country and to dedicate ourselves with the companies. Reporter for the first time this year, the Parent Company offers employees up to ten hours of paid time off each year. Im doing the trim. Okay. Youre the special feature. Reporter projects across the country have the potential to make so many more children smile. We have to climb the seats to get the projects. We have to support early childhood. We have a nice country tomorrow. Reporter in annandale, virginia, surae chinn, 9 news now. Good stuff. Sandys path when we come back. Stay with us. Like a lot of people, im wrapping my head around the thing, but you hear the mayor from rehoboth beach, he didnt sound all that concerned to me. He probably will be concerned tomorrow. One reason he may not be concerned is its 300 miles south of hatteras, hundreds of miles away from them. But we cant get hung up on the tropical characteristics. Its not a strong hurricane right now. Ironically it will be a stronger storm monday night and also into tuesday when it becomes extra tropical. Thats when it will hammer us. Well detail when the high winds will roll in here. You can expect flooding monday and tuesday. Damaging winds monday and tuesday, with highest winds maybe not until tuesday. We will zoom into sandy. Some of the bands now just kind of buffing the coast of North Carolina. Some of the bands getting pretty close to the del mar, too. Its not crazy impressive on the satellite picture, but the circulation is just enormous. Its 400 miles in diameter. That is a rather large storm, which is why its not important exactly where it makes landfall, because Tropical Storm wind force winds are 400 miles in diameter around the center. Thats pretty impressive. We see bands to the south and really the next 24 hours, the southern bay will become a little bit rough as will the del mar, but especially down towards ocean city. Okay, here are the forecast models. Love this. Three models taking it out to sea, but most of the models now recurving it back into land. In fact, one model trying to make it do a little bit of a loop. The good news is the trend has been a little farther north. The farther north the landfall, the less rain and less wind. It wont miss us but the impact will be less as we get into monday night and tuesday. If it does one of these loops, its going to be around even into halloween. So may be awhile before we get rid of this storm as well. 75 Miles Per Hour winds, located about 300 miles south of hatteras. It kind of behaves itself nicely. Were looking at landfall, i would say southern new jersey probably more likely. Maybe a little farther north, early this evening we thought around delaware. The other thing about this track, it really releases this storm up into southern quebec. I dont think it will go that fast. Consequently, i think it will remain with us for a while. Tropical Storm Force Winds tomorrow morning, theyll be very close to us tomorrow evening. A massive storm. The good news, Hurricane Force winds stay offshore. The bad news is it makes its disturbance turn, well see the possibility of winds anywhere from 4050 Miles Per Hour, maybe even 60 Miles Per Hour as we get into tuesday and also tuesday night. Rainfall, this is one model. Rainfall potential now still pretty heavy for us, anywhere from 5 to maybe 6 inches of rain. That is pretty impressive. Erica, lets talk some wind, shall we . All right, yeah. We are definitely going to see strong winds out of this storm. This could be a historic impact for us. Look at these winds already 40 Miles Per Hour wind gusts in norfolk. 37 miles an hour wind gusts in hatteras. These are only going to get stronger. For us, we will see a sustained period of strong wind gusts. 35 miles an hour already by 6 00 a. M. Monday. If you still have that monday morning rush, it is going to be brutal out there with the wind and rain. 45 Miles Per Hour wind gusts remain with us all day on monday. Then they actually increase as we head into the night on tuesday morning. The winds will not settle down. They could even get stronger. So we are going to see Tropical Storm force winds for a very pro longed period of time. And thats why sandy impact includes losing shingles off the roof. Roof damage is definitely possible. Political signs, please pull them out of the lawn and put them in a safe place, because they will be flying missiles with some of these strong winds. Street flooding is obviously potential problem here. Make sure you clean out the storm drains. If they are in your neighborhood. Downed trees and limbs will also be a concern. Topper, back to you. Michael and son, a live look outside. A very nice evening. 62 right now. Winds out of the northeast at 10. Pressure beginning to fall. Next three days, tomorrow our 9 weather alert yellow. Then well go to a Severe Weather alert on monday and also tuesday. 52 on monday. 50 on tuesday. That might be generous, actually. Next seven days, again, showers may linger into halloween. Not a good thing. Temperatures in the mid50s. Mid50s on thursday. Maybe showers on thursday. Then we begin to dry out on friday and saturday. So again, as erica mentioned, a prolonged period of gusty winds and heavy rain, not a good combo. Kristen berset is up next in sports. The Washington Redskins still have a game to play despite Hurricane Sandy looming in the background. Weather wont be that great tomorrow. The burgundy and gold head to hines field to face the steelers. Fletcher will reportedly play tomorrow despite hamstring and back issues. The rookie and his offense will have a tough task keeping the steel curtain from closing in. Theyre a tough defense. They cause a lot of problems. They dont give you easy throws.
