mix of. we're under a freezing rain advisory until 4:00 a.m. that covers fairfax county even prince william's county. south of 56 and south of 50, there will be no problems tonight. temperatures, 32 in gaithersburg. 34 downtown. we're still looking at a -- some major icing from fredrick, maybe as much as .3. some icing between gaithersburg and fredrick. overnight, freezing rain, mainly rain dc south and east. fog. that may be a bigger problem. your wake-up weather, rain and flooding could be a possibility. temperatures in the 30s across the board. still freezing rain north and west of town. we'll update that and talk about when the winds pick up later. >> okay. let's take a quick look at those weather headlines. >> the office of personnel management is, once again, giving federal workers the option to take unscheduled leave or telework. >> but the d.c. government has not said whether they will be closed or delayed. as of now, school will start on time for all counties now. there are no issues on the metrorail or the bus. trains are -- mawc trains are run -- are one -- marc trains are running on time. >> the windy city is getting 2 to 3 inches of snow an hour. i'm in the 9news information is cold comfort if you are one of the thousands of travelers who can't get to where you need to go. whale there's not much dealing with our area, backups across the nation are affecting domestic flights, more than 6,000 flights in all and already more than 3,000 are cancelled for tomorrow. reagan national airport was practically a ghost town. >> i'm just exhausted. i would like to go home. >> reporter: but for this doctor, home looks like this -- >> i'm gonna be in a hotel room the next few days. >> reporter: the chicago doctor is not getting a flight there or anywhere else for a while. >> all flights from leaving from here, are cancelled. i had to connect out of la guardia or philadelphia and they even tried to connect me from phoenix to chicago but the weather is too bad. >> reporter: the national weather service is calling this one of the most disruptive storms of the last decade. residents of 33 states from new mexico to maine are dealing with snow, wind gusts and ice. department of homeland security. the federal government has declared resources already to 11 state and is preparing for all types of scenarios including the potential for widespread power outages fredrick county. right behind me, a prime example of what could be very dangerous in tomorrow morning's commute. overpasses and bridges. >> the bridges and ramps are of particular concern because they they send to -- because they tend to freeze first. >> reporter: that's why thousands of pounds of salt has been put down. >> liquid mass niece yum, really, re-- magnesium, for the really, really cold temperatures and ice. >> reporter: even when treated, roads and ramps can be very slippery. >> this morning, the county roads i was in, when you hit the accelerator, the spires spun. when you hit the brakes, you went into a spin. >> tomorrow morning is what scares me. >> reporter: another danger tomorrow could be flooding from either snow that's accumulated or flooded. if you see standing water, arrested johnny sweet, 17 years old, and they charged him with the murder and kidnapping of 18-year-old latasha frasier. back in august someone killed her. her body has never been found. police arrested brian gaither last week. he told police he stuffed her body in a bin and put it in the trash. tonight in egypt, protesters who once numbered in the tens of thousands now fill the streets by hundreds of thousands. and they are demanding president hosni mubarak leave office now. earlier tonight, mubarak said he would not yield to that demand. he did announce he would not seek reelection when his term ends. the demonstrators say, not soon enough. in a nation where 40% of the men, women and children live at or near the poverty line. president obama spoke to mubarak late today. >> what i indicated to president mubarak tonight is my belief an orderly transition must be meaningful, it must be peaceful and it must begin now. >> protesters insist they will not leave the streets until mubarak is gone. and there are signs the military won't interfere. tonight, soldiers at checkpoints did nothing to stop crowds from entering public squares. and the military has promise -- promised not to fire on peaceful protesters. some say the protesters have come to the streets because they are hungry for democracy. as derek mcginty successes, in "let's be real." perhaps they are angry. >> how angry would you be if the price of food was going up at record speedped and -- record speed and you were making $2 a day or less? that's the done census for some 80 million egyptians as the price of oil, gas and sugar and grains hit all-time highs. think about this -- a credit survey says the average egyptian spends about 41% of their income on food, compare that to -- compare that to americans at 10%. it's easy to oversimply fi this and there are simply a lot of factors in this, including the rebellion in tunisia that sent that letter scrambling out of that country. egyptians want extreme punishment. >> they said i needed to pick up my son. he was being suspended. they were recommending expulsion and they were gonna press charges on him. >> reporter: andrew michael said he got that phone call from school officials back in december. at the center of it all -- a spitball incident. andrew wouldn't speak on camera because his attorneys asked him not to. however, his father says he knows his son and they shouldn't have used a plastic tube like this one to shoot this at -- to use this and throw plastic balls to classmates. >> that was wrong, yes, it was. >> reporter: the biggest part of the punishment, andrew senior says, is his son, not being allowed to return to school. >> you do this. you pay this. you bring the scales back in the balance. he did this, he was paid this. his whole life is scared, his whole future is changed because of one spitball. >> reporter: this father and his son are worried this could jeopardize him pursuing a military career, just like his father, after high school. >> the family and their lawyer says they will continue to appeal the decision, even if it goes as far as the u.s. supreme court. now, none of our various calls or e-mails to spotsylvania high school were returned. we'll continue to try to reach them. tonight, the d.c. supervisor's -- superintendent's office has taken the steps to ensure one young man is safe and west. rain for the morning commute will probably taper off toward the end of the commute. i would allow some extra time anyway. and then becoming windy in the afternoon, 20, 25 miles an hour. that's not good if we see some flooding and icing to the north. look at this storm. it's just amazing. all right. blizzard conditions in chicago. tremendous ice storm around i- 80 over the next 12 hours, debilitating ice storm. as far as we're concerned some of the colder air has morned into montgomery county and fredrick county. let me show you the doppler. rain, south of town, bethesda rain, even leesburg rain. to the north we're seeing temperatures around 32 or a little bit below, fredrick, mount airy, we will zoom in a little bit. mythburg got 29. they have freezing rain. 34 at national. that's okay. 33 in bethesda and rockville. but you get up to gaithersburg, 32. i think d.c. south and east remains above freezing tonight. so consequently, major icing still possible, frederick, to martinsburg, hagerstown and with winds in the afternoon .50 will cause problems. some icing is problems. but we don't see any power problems and primarily rain south of town as we go through the morning. so overnight, freezing rain north and west, mainly rain d.c. south and east and fog overnight as well. 2 to 34. now, tomorrow morning, freezing rain extreme north and west. rain elsewhere will be ending. i think by the time the rain ends north and west it will be over with in terms of being freezing. temperatures 28 to 40 and then afternoon might even see some breaks in the clouds. at least we go back up into the 40s. the next three days -- upper 30s, colder on thursday, clouds come in friday. but nice. 45, pretty decent for early february. next seven days, watching that weak coastal. quite frankly, rain may end the snow in the mid- to upper 20s. nice on sunday and monday and then rain to snow again with a weaker system on tuesday with temperatures in the upper 30s and looking at some guidance for dallas, anybody going down to the super bowl, it may not get above freezing for the next few days. that's dallas. >> couldn't happen to a nicer city.
