we're in the bulls-eye of yet another monster storm. monster. >> i just peeked at latest data and not much is changed. we're looking at a very serious coastal storm. i'm really concerned about the conditions wednesday monday morning anything. let's goat to the computer and we'll -- go to the computer and we'll talk about what we know. the heaviest snow now will be wednesday morning or late, late tuesday night. blizzard conditions wednesday morning. it will be a dryer snow. that's good and bad news. it will mix south and east. and the reason why the dryer snow is a good and bad thing, it's going to be much more windy and blowing and drifting snow on wednesday is going to be a huge, huge problem. here is the snowfall potential. it didn't change much. general 10-12-inch snowfall. to the north 1-2 feet. i think you get the hint. it's a dangerous storm. 6-12 and less to the south as we go down towards extreme southern maryland and northern neck. winter storm warnings in effect north and west. winter storm watch to the south. we'll come back and break down the snow amounts by hour and have wakeup weather in a minute. >> thank you, top. here is a look at the latest from the storm we got out of. federal government will be closed but dc government will be opened. 19 jurisdictions have cancelled schools tomorrow. loudoun county schools are going to be closed for the rest of the week. they've already made that decision. as of now, dulles and reagan national airport will operate as normal but will make a decision afternoon on whether to maintain service on wednesday. both airports say check with your airline carrier before flying out for the latest updates. this weekend's heavy snow is putting a strain on roofs of homes and businesses. but how can you tell if you could be at risk of a collapse? 9news now surae chinn spoke with a roof inspector and has tips for us to lack for. surae. >> reporter: some people have a problem with the roof or the start of the problem with the roof and not even know it. check out this home at the end. there are lots of isaac lz, an indication -- icicles indicating the gutters is clogged up. heavy snowed cause the awning collapsed but that's not all the homeowner has to were re about. >> once it hits the colder gutter, it's now refreezing and backing up into and under the roof sheeting underneath the roof singles. >> reporter: when there is not enough installation in your attic, heat escapes which melts the snow and refreezes and causes a backup. clearing your gutters and downspouts are extremely important. >> they should come in here and get in here and dig this out. >> reporter: after hearing what our in spector had to say, a homeowner came out to clear his downspout. >> i can't do anything. >> reporter: like many of you homeowners, his downspout was covered in snow. >> that's the end of it. >> reporter: and sure enough, there was plenty of ice. >> there's some ice. >> reporter: so usually the flat roof you really have to be watchful for, right? >> yes. because those are the ones that hold the snow. >> reporter: arch and gabled roof are not in the clear either. snow and water can move up under the shing will. >> it can -- shingle. >> it can cause an eternal leaking into the house which sometimes the ceiling could cave in if it gets too much water on the drywall. >> reporter: a good indication is seeing lots of ice sickles near your gutter. >> they need to make sure to get the family out of the home because that could mean the house is collapsing. >> reporter: everyone has a gult er issue by now, but -- gutter issue by now, but pay a toengs to the roof. by now -- pay attention to the roof. by now that's about 50 pounds of snow per square foot. also, if you want to hire a roofer who can take out all of that snow, that is going to cost you 95-$120 per person. so a roof like this one, a townhome, that is going to cost you about $200. a regular house maybe 500. and also one other note about critical information. thank you, surae. new at 11:00, the storm has forced a fire station to evacuate. station 206 in alexandria says the roof is having issue. there is just too much snow on top. as a precaution, all personnel have left that building. the station specializes in technical rescues. and heavy snows turned the table in the fairfax county elite fire and rescue team after this caused a fire station's roof to collapse. it happened this morning on columbia pike. everybody was able to get out okay, about you a fire engine, ambulances and even a boat were damaged. the crews were moved to another fire station around the county. over in vienna, the snow caused the roof of a post office to buckle. this happened in the 200-block of lawyer's road today. that post office was evacuated and everybody got out safely. and if you experienced roof damage due to the snowstorm, the insurance information institute says you should contact your agent to start the claim's process. make a list. photograph all of the damage in the lost items. save your receipts if you buy any tarps or covering to keep out the melting snow. that way you can submit them along with the claim. >> the clock is ticking to get people's power back on. i'm in our storm safety al lerted center taking -- alert center taking a look at the outage map. at laes check pepco was reporting 17,000 customers without power. most of those in montgomery county. dominion va power says they have 1700 customers without electric. bge is reporting 865 customers with no service. now, if you are one of the unlucky ones still without here, there are now still several warming centers newspaper run. in montgomery county there are three in silver springs, brookville and rockville. in fairfax alexandria and oakton. we have a list of exact locations on our website wusa9.com right under the headlines. and voters don't need electricity to fly a politician who blows it during a major snowstorm. it can make or break a political career. politicians know that very well. >> reporter: we're at 41st pretty heavily chunked up here. as you were talking to surae a minute ago, a cab came up to drop off someone who lives on the street. they said forget it. she got out and fought her way through the storm. politicians know there are political implications to snow removal. politicians in washington remember the snowstorm of january 1987. mayor barry went on a six-day superbowl vacation while he was gone snow removal was botched and voters remembered. >> i think it hurt marion. >> reporter: the former dc mayor. >> people do remember when you don't respond in terms of snow removal. without a doubt. >> reporter: pedestrians on jefferson streety evening aren't likely to forget. they say no plows had hit the street. >> they haven't done anything. nothing. >> i got stuck. accidents had happening. >> reporter: this street is down to pavement in almost both lanes but clearly passable in both directions. >> a government has to work equally and as well for all of its people. >> reporter: around the corner from the mayor's block, his neighbors need memory to see a clear street. >> we're going down 16th street we'll keep thinking it will be clear. we live right around the corner from mayor fenty. >> i think the public is understanding when it's these kind of numbers and unprecedented but then their patience will one out. >> reporter: that's the former mayor. no longer do you wait until all of the major thoroughfares and business roads are cleared. at the first sign of snow, he now sends smaller plows into neighborhood streets to hit them just when the snow begins to fall. right now the mayor says there are 270 snow removal vehicles on the street. he says he has a hot list of streets that have not been touched and says they are the number one priority tonight. voters who live on those streets hope so. and derek and anita, when it's time to vote will likely remember. >> gary nurenberg, thank you. and for all of you wondering what to expect for metro tomorrow morning, here is what we know tonight. the subway will open at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. but service will be limited to trains every 30 minutes. and many of the above ground stations will still be closed. and with more snow on the way, who knows when things will be back to normal. >> our job is not going to be finished probably for the remainder of this week. because whatever falls tuesday is certainly going to pose some challenges on wednesday and we're going to see how the rail system and the bus system holds up. >> that was a spokesman for metro. metro tells us on the red line trains will be running from the medical center to forest glenn. blue line trains will run from franconia to station arm re. green line will be running from greenbelt to branch avenue. the orange line from vienna to carrollton. and the yellow line from huntington to fort totten. of course, this could all change once the snow starts piling up tomorrow night. and talk about your ripple effect. no above ground service from metro means no subway trains at reagan national means a lot of passengers desperate for a ride. and hundreds of them lined up for cabs outside the terminal. just not pretty. stay prepared, stay informed and stay indoors. that is the message from dc fire chief dennis rubin to make sure everybody stays safe as the second storm approaches. chief rubin says his department is ready to handle this second round of winter weather. things are already in motion at the fire operation center in northwest dc. the unplowed roads create a big obstacle for fire and ems crews trying to get to victims. and tomorrow's snow could make it even worse. but the chief says they have partnered up with the national guard for help. >> the humvees and our customer service units have actually gone out and tag team in a tandem fashion so it's immediately close by to assist primary with gaining access while the paramedics provide the great medical care that they give. >> full-time dc national guard personnel are being asked to report for duty at 10:00 in the morning tomorrow. rubin also reminds everybody to double-check the firefighter suffered smoke inhalation. the blaze damaged at least four units there. no word yet how it started. president obama is among those remembering congress member john murtha tonight. he died today. he suffered complications from gallbladder surgery. mr. obama called murtha a devoted husband and father who had a tough as nails reputation. in 1974, he became the first vietnam vet elected to congress. now to the latest on toyota's trouble. cbs news as learned toyota is inspecting all of the hybrid models for brake problems. for days now toyota has been considering a recall because of complaints that the brakes seem to fail momentarily in bad weather or bumpy roads. >> anybody is sensitized to any possible effect and every model they have is under the microscope. >> weather permitting, congress will hold a hearing to examine when the auto maker and the national highway traffic safety administration knew something was wrong with toyota's vehicles. and taking a quick look now at news from across the station. a few people were hurt in houston when a train and bus collided. no word yet on the number of victims or what caused that accident. the aclu says a science instructor in california is improperly teaching religious views on homosexuality and abortion as fact. the union says the college teacher's message violate california's law protecting gays from discrimination. that teacher is also accused of characterizing homosexuality as a mental illness that degrades society. lift of shuttle endeavour. six astronauts are bringing a new room and an observation deck for the iss. kind of adding on. it took off after 4:00 a.m. after how clouds forced it to cancel yesterday. a candidate ordered 50 volunteers to dig out those in needs. >> 9news now maryland, gg guise, 9news now and wusa9.com. and i'm meteorologist topper shutt. here is the forecast first. the next three days, cloudy in the morning. now will break out late in the morning. the steady snow will fall in the afternoon as a dangerous coastal storm. heaviest snow now in the afternoon. temps around 30 for a high on wednesday. we will clear out on thursday. high temperatures only in the mid 30s. here is our snowfall potential map. 10-20 inches across the metro area. bulls-eye north towards hartford county and north eastern maryland. i suppose i can pull it back down. the real point is, we're going to get a ton of snow. and the real, real danger here is wind. i'm really concerned about blowing and drifting snow. much more so than i was with the previous storm. 6-12 to the south. st. mary's county. calvert county. and extreme st. mary's country probably only 4-6. an immediate metro area, another monster storm. here is a breakdown. tomorrow afternoon 1-2 inches and overnight 4-8 inches. overnight on tuesday. and then wednesday morning and additional 4-8 inches. that's when we get into the blizzard like conditions and then wednesday evening 1-2 inches. a total of 10-20 inches. will there be areas of two feet, but that's a general number to cover most of the metro area. here is the deal. much stronger winds. wind chills are going to be below zero. so do not abandon your car if you do decide to travel. we don't recommend that. i don't recommend travel between here and philadelphia on wednesday morning. could it be as bad as '66? that is an unbelievable thought considering how much snow we have available to blow around. winds are going to gust over to 40 miles an hour wednesday afternoon and evening. and probably 30 miles an hour right on through wednesday night and thursday. where is the storm right now? here it is taking shape. southwest airlines is closed -- has cancelled all flights at o'hare from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. tomorrow. so it's going to hit the midwest, the great lakes, ohio valley and eventually the southern part of the storm will become the coastal low and take over and coastal low is just hammers. and this is going to be no exception. because it's going to be so intense and a little closer to us this time, we're going to get incredible winds with the system. already snowing in tennessee and kentucky. clouds coming in now. again, some flakes are possible tomorrow morning. but the bulk of the storm will fall -- bulk of the snow will fall tuesday night and wednesday morning. next seven days, 33 tomorrow. another coastal storm. 30 on wednesday. we're going to keep it dry thursday, friday, saturday, sunday. temperatures still in the 30s. so we're going to have the thaw and freeze problem. at least it will melt slowly. we have a flake on monday. that is a snow shower. that is not a storm. high temperature only 32. i've run out of surprises and what to say. i'm none. >> unprecedented. you've said that several
