Its not too terribly thick and dense right now, but there is reduced visibility in culpeper and warrenton with about a mile, two and a half miles visibility now in martinsburg and four milesvisibility in hagerstown. Were following developments this morning out of juneau, alaska, where police have arrested a suspect in the brutal slaying of a rockville, maryland couple at their home earlier this month. Police have been very tight lipped about this case. Residents around here have been on edge ever since the double homicide one week ago. Police have divulged few details until the apparent break in the case. Residents have had to live with yellow tape around this house for days now with not many details except that they know that it was a burglary. Wusa 9 has been able to confirm with authorities in juneau, alaska that 31yearold Scott Tomaszewski had been arrested on a warrant issued by Montgomery County police. He lived right next door to the vilardos in rockville. They have adjoining yards, they connect. Theyre very close right here. Detectives searched his home and seemed to be concentrating in the garage. Now, we should be hearing much more. 65yearold dick vilardo and 67 yearold jody vilardo were found stabbed to death on mothers day, as we know. Tomaszewski hasnt been charged yet. Hes been arrested on saturday as a fugitive from justice according to juneau, alaska police. We dont know yet about he might be extradited back here to maryland. We, again, are expected to hear much more from Montgomery County police, the county exec and the States Attorneys Office, but very, very tight lipped here as far as local police. Police believe the other bodies are the couples son, philip, and the housekeeper, veralicia figueroa. One person is dead, another one in a hospital this morning with serious burns after an Apartment Fire in alexandria. The fire started saturday in the 4700block of kenmore avenue. The surviving victim is being treated at Washington Hospital centers burn unit. Several apartments were damaged by smoke and water. Now the red cross is helping residents find temporary ho using. Crews are still looking for the cause of the fire. A surf shop on the boardwalk in ocean city, new jersey went up in flames last night. The shop is on 7th street. There was an employee working at the time but they were able to get out safely. No one was injured. Breaking overnight, at least 22 tornados have been reported in just the last 24 hours. 8 in oklahoma, 6 in minnesota, 5 in texas and 1 each in kansas, missouri, nebraska and wyoming. Authorities in oklahoma say there were reports of damage to homes and businesses, significant damage to power lines, as well. Look at the video from a storm chaser. The storm chaser got caught in a storm with hail so big it smashed the cars windshield. You can see that there. The threat for more Severe Weather today to hit the midwest and southwest. Looking at news around the world this morning. Hundreds of people are stranded again in the mountains of nepal. The people were caught there after a major aftershock on tuesday. Many living in tents now because theyre afraid to shelter in the ruins of their homes. International crews are working to clear a passage through the mountains. Nepal was struck by a magnitude 7. 8 quake on april 25th that killed more than 8200 people, then another magnitude 7. 3 quake killed another 1178. And the aftershocks continue to make the situation more difficult on the ground in nepal. Following a series of massive landslides, the canadian red cross had to be evacuated from their Field Hospital there. The aid workers were flown out of harms way there. A teenage suicide bomber blew herself up and killed seven other people on saturday outside a bus station in northeast nigeria. The blast is the latest in a string of attacks this week by the extremists in nigeria. 33 people were seriously injured, 7 are in Critical Condition following that blast. Now the latest on the crash of amtrak 188. Regulators ordered amtrak to put new Safety Measures in place. The fbi is also launching its own investigation, trying to determine if something hit the trains windshield just seconds before the crash. And Train Service will now start again between washington and newyork on tuesday. Heres more. Reporter amtrak has agreed to improve Safety Measures in the heavilytraveled northeast corridor. The federal Railroad Administration is issuing an emergency order requiring technology that will alert the engineer when a train is over the speed limit and automatically apply the brakes if the train doesnt slow down. Train 188 was traveling 106 106 miles an hour, more than twice the speed limit when it derailed tuesday. The engineer, Brandon Bostian, spoke to ntsb investigators friday. Hes required to sound the bell as he goes through past the station stop, he did that. He recalled doing that. But he has no recollection of anything past that. Reporter the fbi Forensic Experts will now analyze the damage to the engine windshield after a crew member reported an object may have hit it seconds before the derailment. Two other trains traveling in the same area around the same time also appear to have been hit by something. Monika williams was on one of them. The train came to a stop. Five people, including three children, are in the hospital this morning after a serious crash in pencil hills saturday morning. Three children were ejected from the vehicle when the car rolled over. The two adults had to be extricated from the car, according to Prince Georges CountyFire Department spokesman. There is a cloud hanging over graduation today at the university of notre dame. 21yearold student from colorado who was set to graduate today died after falling from the roof of the School Sports arena. William meckling of centennial, colorado, was among a group of students who climbed onto the roof early saturday. The school says the roof was wet and meckling fell just before 3 45 in the morning. I mean, its really horrible. Were here for my brothers graduation. I cant imagine. Im sure his family is here and i cant imagine what theyre going through and how terrible that is. School Officials Say meckling was a Mechanical Engineering major and a member of the fencing team there. A key isis leader has been killed in a firefight with u. S. Delta forces. Special Operation Forces killed the leader and captured his wife after a raid in eastern syria. Danielle noddingham reports. Reporter one official says president obama authorized the raid targeting the senior isis leader. He was killed during the overnight operation when he engaged u. S. Forces. About a dozen isis fighters were also killed in the raid that included hand to hand combat. Delta commandos captured the mans wife, who was taken to a military detention facility in iraq for interrogation. A young woman, who may have been held as a slave, was rescued. U. S. Officials hope to get a better understanding of isis leadership from cell phones recovered during the raid. The leader directed the islamic states black market oil and gas operations, used to finance the terror group. He also played a role in isis military operations. The u. S. Has been conducting a monthlong air campaign against isis targets in iraq and syria. Friday, the group retook a city in western iraq. In the immediate metro area, we wont see any activity until about 3 00, but thats still significantly earlier than yesterday, where we didnt see anything until after 6 00. So, on satellite and radar, we have that ark of showers and even some embedded cells of heavier rainfall continuing to move past us, we will track them here for you. It is humid. Heading into the evening hours, more showers and rumbles of thunder. You can see the yellows and oranges, an indication of the best potential of that thunder between 3 00 and 7 00. It will taper off during the overnight hours, we will have a warm and muggy night tonight into early monday morning. So, monday morning, you have the areas of fog,a spotty shower, as well, and spots of shower activity starting to develop around the lunchtime hour on monday on 9 futurecast. Heading into the afternoon, very similar, right . We will see the showers and thunderstorms developing and pushing out as we head into the overnight hours, cooler air is finally going to arrive by the middle of the workweek, but before that happens, we will push the cold front out and that wont happen until tuesday afternoon. Somebody asked him at the beginning of the week, i guess it was, if you knew then what you know now, would you have ordered american troops into iraq as his brother did. First he said he would, then the next day he said, well, thats just a hypothetical question and by the end of the week, he was saying, no, i wouldnt have. When brittney found herself without any friends training him brings a smile to my face, seeing he wants to do these things and wants to be with me. Reporter she found a friend in dodge. He goes fishing with her, to the lake, she throws him in the lake, she got him a life jacket. I mean, its just her best friend. Reporter brittney spent hours training dodge. Good boy reporter the positive response has given her confidence and a passion to put an end to bullying. I want him to show everyone how how amazing our bond is together and that everyone that said i wasnt an animal freak wasnt wrong and i can do this. Another reason to get regular physical activity, researchers in norway tracked 15,000 elderly men and found 30 minutes of activity six days a week was lived to a 40 percent lower risk of premature death. Longterm depression may double the risk of stroke in middleage people. A study in the journal of the American Heart Association followed 16,000 patients over the age of 50 and found that even after symptoms of depression improve, you have to be careful because the risk of stroke remains elevated. And doctors can learn a lot from the firm nice of your hand firmness of your handshake. The strength of a patients grip can be a better marker than blood pressure. Adults were followed for four years and they found a weaker grip may signal illness, such as Heart Failure or a possible stroke. Yes, today its early afternoon on wards, so we will see the round of showers and thunderstorms developing faster and earlier today than yesterday. Its probably not that surprising to you because it is awfully muggy out there. We start right now with a look at the weather cam. You can tell from this shot of the Jefferson Memorial that is muggy. We have dew points in the 60s to around 70 out there, so thats sticky. And it will be 75 degrees under a complete deck of cloud cover at 10 00. With a few breaks in the clouds, we start to stir up the instability, which provides a chance for showers and thunderstorms. They arrive west of town first, and then make their way eastward, progressing toward the east as we head through the day. The best potential for those storms in the immediate metro area and the beltway and the surrounding counties is between 3 00 and 7 00. We will taper things offer in the evening. Todays high, 83 degrees. We will reach that at 3 00 in the afternoon, as well. We will track the storms for you coming up. Thank you. Now to our top story, there is a suspect in custody this morning in connection with that double murder of a rockville couple. They were found dead on mothers day. The man in custody lives next door to the murder victims. Surae chinn is live now in rock having. Good morning, surae. Reporter good morning, were learning a little bit more about the arrest. Police have given very few details about the case. I can tell you that the vilardos neighbor lives right next door, right beyond those trees. Police have been standing by for days, ever since this happened, one week ago today. Wusa9 confirmed with authorities in juneau, alaska that 31yearold Scott Tomaszewski was arrested on a cruise ship that was docked in juneau. He was arrested at 8 00 a. M. Yesterday without incident and else courted right off escorted right offer that ship. Hes being held without bond. Tomaszewski was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for first degree burglary and as a fugitive from justice, according to juneau, alaska police. Detectives searched his home and seemed to be concentrating in the garage back here in rockville. 65yearold dick vilardo and 67 yearold jody vilardo were found stabbed to death on mothers day. Police tell wusa9 they were murdered sometime after returning from dinner the night before with friends in charlestown, west virginia. Police believe the vilardos were killed during a burglary. Residents have been on message ever since this double homicide happened. Its good and shocking both at the same time. Weve been really concerned about there being, you know, potentially a killer loose in our neighborhood. People have been keeping their lights on, you know, inquiring about security systems, talking and communicating more to one another. Im still very confused and perplexed as to the brutal manner in which they were executed. That doesnt seem to make any sense. Reporter and hopefully it will make a little more sense this afternoon. A press conference is scheduled later on today. Police so far have been very tightlipped about this case. We dont know when this man will be extradited back to Montgomery County. We should hear more from the Montgomery County police chief, county exec and the States Attorneys Office later on today, sometime around midday. Back to you. Theyre trying to talk to the man seen here connected to the slaying of a family and their housekeeper on thursday. Earlier this week, Police Identified two of the people found dead in a burning home in northwest d. C. , Savvas Savopoulos and his wife, amy. And Police Believe the other bodies found are the couples son, philip, and their housekeeper, veralicia figueroa. Three of the four victims had blunt force or sharp object injuries, according to the autopsy reports. A fire victim remains in the hospital this morning, suffering serious burns after an Apartment Fire that killed another person in alexandria. Firefighters are working to determine the cause of the fire. It was saturday in the 47 4700 block of kenmore avenue. The surviving victims are being treated at Washington Hospital centers burn unit right now. Flashbacks for new jersey beachgoers to the 2013 boardwalk fire there. Crews overnight battled a fire at a shop on the ocean city boardwalk, where one employee was inside the surf shop at the time, but managed to get out. No one was injured and the damage was contained to that one shop. Regulators have now ordered amtrak to put new Safety Measures in place as the fbi is launching its own investigation, trying to determine if something hit the trains windshield seconds before the crash. Hedda daniels has more. Reporter amtrak has agreed to improve Safety Measures in its heavilytraveled northeast corridor. The federal Railroad Administration is issuing an emergency order, requiring technology that will alert the engineer where a train is over the speed limit and automatically apply the brakes if the train doesnt slow down. Train 188 was traveling 106 miles per hour, more than twice the speed limit when it derailed tuesday. Engineer Brandon Bostian spoke to ntsb investigators friday. Hes required to sound his bell as he goes through, passed the station stop, and he did that. He recalled doing that. But he has no recollection of anything past that. Reporter fbi Forensic Experts will now analyze the damage to the engine windshield after a crew member reported an object may have hit had seconds before the derailment. Two other trains traveling in the same area around the same time also appear to have been hit by something. Monika williams was on one of them. Her train came to a stop. Now theres another train a few minutes ahead and youre telling me its off the tracks . So lots doing. And then a little bit of gratitude, too. Reporter amtrak expects rail service between new york and philadelphia to resume on tuesday. In new york, Hedda Daniels for cbs news. Local train officials in that area say Transit Police get at least one call a week in that area for people throwing things at passing trains. Well, there is a positive story out of baltimore, in the wake of those freddie gray protests. Throughout the riots and the looting that overtook the city, there were several Public Places and businesses that stayed open despite the danger. Thats right. And one of those located in the hardesthit area is now being recognized. Tracy, from our sister station in baltimore, explains. Reporter the foundation, not the only ones to recognize the library as a beacon of hope of the these letters seen right here from students outof state also show their support. From the cbs burning down across the street to businesses being looted nearby, the library at pennsylvania and north avenues was at the center of the unrest during the freddie gray protest. We saw that the library continued to operate and everything is going on. It really impounded to us what a Community Anchor it is. Reporter the library, giving the community a sense of security and hope. Central that the library be open for the community right after the riots and during the entire time of the unrest. Reporter their sibling story began when both signed up for a writing course at Columbia University in 2013. Neither could have imagined the tale theyd end up telling, together. Its the first day of class, youre doing introductions, when did it dawn on you that you could be related. She said she was from new jersey and had a child. When she followed up with a rapid fire of more detailed questions like were you given up for adoption in florida by a woman named lesli . The room froze. I was like is this real life . We spoke with the mother from rhode island. She didnt believe in a higher power after 48 years, you have to believe in one now. Its basically a miracle. She was just a troubled teenager when she gave up the girls for adoption at birth. A year apart. 35 years later, her voice still breaks. I wanted them to have the best possible future they could have and it wouldnt have been with me. Its sad to give up your own children, but i thought it was the best to give them everything. So they had a chance. Reporter in the next few days, the mom who gave her girls a selfless gift will meet katie for the first time, since that hospital room so long ago. What she did for us was incredible. She gave us literally the gift of life. Reporter this familys next chapter begins monday when lizzie graduates from columbia with a degree in creative writing.
