Hello everybody im bruce johnson, if you dont need to be out please stay indoors. Thats the word across the area as heavy snow moves through the entire region. Weve got Live Team Coverage from maryland, virginia and the districts. Weve begin with chief meteorologist topper. This is going to be nasty. This is going to get heavy. Go and clean your snow off your walkway and driveway now. Otherwise its going to feel like wet concrete in about three hours or so. We think this is eventually going to go from sleet to freezing rain. Not a good scenario. Lets talk about snowfall totals. Were pretty much done with the snowfall totals. Everything is pretty much maybe another little bit but generally 4 to 8 inches to the 95 corridor and points west. Then you get to the south and east of town, it goes off pretty quickly, into southern maryland, not much snow at all. Okay. Lets talk about the transitioning to a mix. Snow changes to or mixes with sleet until about 8 p. M. Sleet or freezing rain, 8 p. M. To midnight. The exceptions will be places north and west of town. Temps above freezing inside the beltway we take about 10 or 11 00. Its been so cold, icing is still possible with temperatures above 32. Snowfall totals, centerville virginia 5 inches. Glenwood, 8, 7 inches in columbia, 6. 4 in reston and 6 inches in frederick. Look at the radar. This is a mixture of sleet and freezing rain. Snowfall rates 1, 2, 3 inches per hour, heavy snow in fairfax and manassas. I suspect even here youre getting a little bit of a mixture of sleet. Right through the south and the west of dale city, look at that. 3 inches per hour is the snowfall rate with that. From rockville and south as well as the beltway in that area were a parking lot. On stretches that were moving, several drivers, including our channel 9 photographer, had to get out and do this. Ems spokesperson is warning on those emergency calls today. Its taking us a little longer to get places. Once were there it takes us a little bit longer to deal with the situation. Ive never been this covered up before my whole life. He took a cab here to this shopping center, others didnt. Even they were telling folks to stay inside if you can. The roads are slippery. There have been countless accidents and abandoned vehicles on all the roads. Reporter bruce, weve got snow falling right now. The visibility is really really bad. Its been changing from sleet back to snow, and so thats whats falling right now, and now we have nightfall, what is very clear is that there was too many cars on the road at a time when plow trucks were trying to do their work. 1, 2, 3. We rolled up on a bunch of spinouts. What happened . Just now my wheels keep on turning right on the snow but i live like a mile away. Is that jeep going to help you . I literally live right up the street. These four cars couldnt make it up the hill. Drivers just abandoned them on the side of the road. What happened . Got stuck. Stuck . Yeah. Yes, actually for a saturday, very surprised. How are conditions . Treacherous out here. People should be home enjoying the day rather than out here on the roads. Lathen county had to call Virginia State police for help throughout the day. Weve seen cars slow down and also fewer cars on the roads. From snow to sleet in georgetown which is what were seeing which is contributing to the poor conditions, the messy conditions on the sidewalk and perhaps more dangerously the messy conditions on the roads. Pick a road, any road and its likely to be dicey in the district. Back roads and side streets are slick and sloppy. Many main roads like connecticut avenue, massachusetts avenue, wisconsin avenue also problematic. We spent some time on rock creek parkway which compared to other roads looks pretty good but most of the ramps were closed because of their condition. We have seen some plows and salt trucks out, but at this point it is still accumulating and just snowing on top of what has already been plowed, and in some cases officials tell me theyre waiting for the accumulation to slow down before they can really clear these roads off. D. C. Deployed more than 200 snow trucks at 9 a. M. Weve seen accidents. Weve seen spinouts and weve seen people stuck all over the district tonight. Thanks a lot for that report. We want to bring you the latest. Whats going on . Whats the condition of the roads right now . Good evening. Were about ready to go into a shift change at 7 and well continue to go throughout the night. Over 200 pieces of equipment on the roads. Weve been trying to maintain the main roads at least in a slush condition and making them passable and so that now that were in a shift in the mix, we should be able to clear most roads within a couple of hours. Why no snow emergency declared . Is it because its saturday, a weekend . No, its really just the what the conditions are. We didnt have that much of accumulation. If we did evaluate it over the night, if we need it put one on in the morning, well put one on in the morning. Right now i dont think well need one. Earlier today you told me you wanted people to stay off the roads. I would imagine you want to double down on that tonight. Yeah, definitely, you know, stay off the roads if you can and if you do have to drive, drive carefully. Just drive safely and make sure you clear all the snow off your car. You can see the blue is primarily snow. This is primarily the sleet or the mix. I think its further north than whats being depicted. The darker blue is the heavy areas of snowfall, and they are pretty heavy out towards german town and manassas and towards fairfax. Well zoom in more. This is pretty good snowfall. Silver spring or up u. S. 1 and also back across 355 and the beltway towards george avenue. Snowfall totals pretty impressive. Myersville 7inch, ghaith usville 7. 2. Wheaton 4 inches. And great falls about 6 inches. Its going to transition from snow to sleet to freezing rain. If youve not cleared your snow, do it quickly. Its going to start to feel like wet cement as we go to sleet to freezing rain. 30 downtown, 27 in frederick, 27 in leesburg. The rest of the forecast here is ms. Grow. On satellite and radar you can see that milder air punching in here from the south. That is why were starting to get that really messy changeover. On 9 futurecast, rain falling at 9 30 according to this model data, but notice the temperatures. Still below freezing. Thats why were expecting that sheet of ice to form on top of the snow thats already fallen. If you want to send the kids outside to do snow angels theyre just going to be gliding on top of the ice once that layer of freezing rain forms, its going to be Strong Enough to do that. As we head into the overnight hours, well start to clear out the rain. By noon on sunday its possible that were completely done with the rain. We might even see the sunset tomorrow night. But overnight tonight not the case. The snow will transition to freezing rain completely throughout the metro area, and then plain rain east of i95. 30 to 36 for your overnight lows. Some of us will see our temperature rise above freezing during the overnight hours. Then on sunday morning the rain continues tapering off the showers by noon were pretty much done with the rain. Temperatures will be in the 30s. As we head into the afternoon actually getting a little bit milder. Highs between 39 and 45 degrees, a leftover shower is possible. Its going to be hard to get warmer tomorrow because of all that snow on the ground, and well probably see some fog developing before the breezes pick up. Monday is a windy day and its going to be cold again. This pattern is just sticking with us. A High Temperature of only 28 on monday, 32 on tuesday, really not a bad day by comparison standards, and then the first alert sevenday forecast a weak frontal boundary on wednesday will bring us just a flurry, but it will turn windy again behind that, and now wusa9 game on sports with dave owens, brought to you by xfinity.
