The community has helped raise 10,000 to help pay for funeral expenses. President obama calls them stationary weapons of mass destruction. Now theres a new push to prevent Chemical Plant disasters that could put tens of thousands of people at risk, some right here in our area in fact. Here is rick hein, a glean peace legislator. Thank you for joining us. What cienlts of plants are we kind of plafnlt rs we talking about plants are we talking about. Any team cal plants that carry poison gas. In the d. C. Area after 9 11, the Sewage Treatment plant put 1. 7 Million People at risk. They had ten rail cars of chlorine gas. In 90 days they converted to a safer alternative. Thats what were trying to get the epa to issue regulations on to require where feasible a plant to switch. People dont know the chlorine gas is used maybe as a cleansing agent or some sort of chemical reaction. Disinfectant. But when they change the state to make it safer, is it still effective for the original intended use . Absolutely. Its very feasible. Just a question of lipol tica will and having a regulation that requires it so its not just voluntary. Lets talk worstcase scenario. We have one of the Treatment Plants that may have rail cars full of this chlorine gas. Sadly or shockingly somebody hit it is with a bomb. What happens to people . What happens to the surrounding area . The u. S. Navy estimates a hundred people per second could die. 100,000 casualties in 30 minutes. So were talking a true weapon of mass destruction. But fortunately like i said there is a an alternative. The problem is theres no priority given. With the new regulations that the epa is overdue in issuing, we can prevent n. One plant in the Baltimore Area put as Million People at risk. And probably a third of schools, students in schools today, in Public Schools are in a risk zone across the country where a hundred Million People are estimated to be in zane gler its a com in danger. Its a complex issue. On the surface it sounds like a no brainer. Absolutely right. A former epa chief under bush, she wants to do this. The president was a champion in the senate, was unsuccessful with legislation. But the epa is now slowly moving on regulation. Our problem is if you dont issue the rules this spring or summer, they wont be ready before the administration leaves office. So its important for epa to act quickly but also with the prevention requirements that even the bush epa proposed in 2002. Whats wait to move the issue forward . Our coalition of unions, Environmental Justice and environmental organizations is all pushing on social media this coming week, the annual versery of the west texas disaster. Theres petitions to the president , over 100,000 people have submitted comments to the epa. But more is needed because this is this is politics unfortunately. Its not about science. As you said, its a no brainer. And it doesnt move quickly. We appreciate your time. Thank you. Allyson, take it away. A yellow alert day. Were tracking this line of showers and storms pushing out from the west. This is the same line of storms that causes great damage across the midwest deadly in fact. Were expecting much less. This is not going to be nearly as severe. Notice the trends here. Its losing a lot of those yellows and oranges indicating the heavier rainfall, the intensity. Whats going to happen the next couple of hours . If we see any kind of sunshine which were starting to see, that will help get things going a bit. It will rejuvenate itself as it heads to our area, as the day unfoaldzs and things unfold and things heat up, storms will come a little stronger as they approach our area. A lot of showers will be just to the south and theyll start to turn to thunderstorms a little later on. What are the threats today . Southern maryland, southern delmarva and also through Central Virginia through the Northern Neck need to be aware. We dont have enough time here to heat up enough to set the stage for some of the stronger storms. This is interesting, though. People are interesting where are those 70degree temperatures. Here they are. The southerly winds are working over here in luray and harrisonburg. As we head farther south, were starting to see things warm up as well. Were in the 60s in the Northern Neck and weve already made the jump out of the 40s into the lower 50s. The southerly winds are here. Theyre fueling in the moist and humid air and things are going to warm up. Are we going to reach the mid to upper 70s . Probably only through Southern Maryland and the Northern Neck. Well barely reach 70 degrees with the heavy cloud deck. But thats good. The clouds will keep things from getting too severe. We like the rain. We dont like the strong thunderstorms. Here comes the futurecast. We have a lot of different models we look at. Ill show you a model better on the timing but a little overdone. Its showing a lot more rain and intensity. Keep that in mind as we go through the afternoon n. Is 2 30 moving through westminster and culpeper. Temperatures are still into the 70s with the southerly wind. We get near 70 for d. C. As we head through about 3 00 to 3 30, were tracking those showers and storms approaching the area. Orioles home opener might have to be on a delay for a few hours as this kicks on out, untilless it starts to rapidly decrease in intensity. Notice farther south, this is where ill be watching this afternoon. Southern maryland and the Northern Neck. Things get pretty intense there because they have so long, all day to heat up to set the stage for some of these thunderstorms. Theyre going to be in the 80s and these storms are going to have very strong winds, hail and the possibility of an isolated tornado is still in the cards there. This is 4 30. We still see some showers back off to the west but things clear out before the sun sets. And by the time the sun sets thereafter, things are really kicking out for a good weekend. So well be here tracking the storms as they approach our area. Topper will be tracking them at 5 00. 67 for tomorrow, near 70 degrees by sunday. The parade, its going to be absolutely great.
