An alexandria man who organized a protest 75 years ago is still having an impact today. This is his face and his name is Samuel Wilbert Tucker and author nancy tells us his story in a new book Samuel Wilbert Tucker. Nancy is with us this afternoon. Thank you very much for being here with us. I never heard about the Alexandria Library sitin. You say youre writing the first biography about Samuel Wilbert Tucker. Tell us more about him and what this library sitin was all about. He was a civil rights lawyer and in 1939, august 21, 1939, it was 21 years before the sit ins of the civil rights movement, he planned a sitin at the Alexandria Public Library to protest its whites only policy. They wouldnt give a library card to blacks . Exactly. Denying them to read and do research. Exactly. What irritated him so much is he grew up a block and a half from this new library and he couldnt use it because he was black. So he planned the sitin with his younger brother otto and some of ottos friends to protest this policy. And to change t. He said its wrong and we need to change it. He knew that he was going to defend the protesters and he knew they would be he was a lawyer. He was a lawyer. He knew they would be arrested for disorderly conduct. So he coached them to be pot light and be properly to be polite and be properly dressed. What inspired you to write this book . I was the first librarian at Samuel TuckerElementary School in alexandria and thats when i learned about this remarkable man. How difficult was it to do research on him . He died before you started the book. What was the source material for you to learn more about this man . I was able to use what our called primary sources. So i did personal interviews with some of his friends and i found a few family members, a distant cousin. But most of my information came from interviews that were done in 19 5 and are house 1985 and are housed at the university of virginia library. I also used the alexandria city directories and census record, military records. He was in world war ii. So i used all of these primary sources to gather material. As i said, he was a lawyer representing those who were with him in the sitin. He was famous for green vs. County school board of new kent county. Me, thats correct yes, thats correct. Thats his case he argued in front of the u. S. Supreme court in 1978. 14 years after the brown decision. During that time School Boards had many freedom of choice plans and many delaying tactics to avoid desegregating public schools. It wasnt until the ruling in tuckers case that the Supreme Court said School Boards, you need to do something now. Were not losing his story. Thank you, nancy, for bringing us the story of Samuel Wilbert Tucker. Thats it for wusa9 news at noon. Well be back at 5 00. Have a gr you want i fix this mess . A mess . I dont think whats that .
