Again just like last week, we have a snow event. Not a lot of snow about arriving at the worst time possible. Make sure you stay tuned to find out where exactly the snow is going to fall and when. Its all coming up in the first. Were learning its not just an inner city drug. Cheaper heroin is hitting streets all across maryland. Were joined by the u. S. Attorney for maryland. First and foremost, how bad is the problem in maryland and where do we think the drug is coming from . The problem has been growing significantly. Thats one of the things that motivated us was to develop a statewide task force. Weve seen a doubling of the number of deaths attributable to heroin. Right now were running more than ten deaths. It comes from primarily oaf the mexican boarder. Also comes from Southeast Asia so there are a number of sources. Our primary goal is to identify who is distributing it here in maryland and put an end to it. Thats hundreds of deaths per year in our small state. Thats a lot. Its already being sold as we know and moved through our state in midbhd maryland ilwillingly illegally. What can a new law do . We have federal laws to prosecute heroin dealers n. Appropriate cases were using those powerful tools. For example, if someone distributes heroin and it causes the death of a user, you can face a mandatory penalty of 20 years up to life in federal prison. Our state partners are looking for similar authorities so they can prosecute those dealers in state court. Is it difficult to track it back to a dealer though because its made so cheaply and so quickly . How difficult is that . It is challenging. One of the things were doing now is were working with local Police Departments to investigate heroin deaths as homicides rather than suicides. If treated as a suicide, you tat victim from the hospital and youre finished. If treated as a homicide, you need to investigate the scene, you need to secure cell phones and paraphernalia, interview witnesses, somebody who might lead you to the dealer and thats what were doing now. Theres a new governor being sworn in next week. Larry hogan will try to govern with a state dominated by democrats. This is a bipartisan issue. Weve been working very closely with the Omalley Administration and closely with the hogan administration. In the and the state of Department Health has primary responsibility for this issue and theyre making an effort to reach out and try to identify folks who have overdosed and survived and intervene and provide them treatment so they wont overdose again in the future. I think that kind of coordination is going to continue statewide. We thank you for your time today. Attorney rosenstein. Erica, weather time. Over to you. Right nowity the cold and dry out here right now its cold and dry out here. Well see temperatures falling off through the rest of the afternoon. Weve reached our High Temperature already. Early thork. Well be at 33 degrees by 3 00. Down to 29 at 6 00 and notice the winds out of the north, northeast at about 10 miles per hour. So were going to have a windchill as well. That cold, dry air is going to set the stage for some snow flakes tomorrow morning. So its just going to be blustery today and then down right frigid tonight with windchills falling into the teens. Then the snow arrives right during the wednesday morning commute. In the beltway itself, just a coating. But more snow will fall south of the beltway. Current temperatures 30 degrees in frederick. 29 in hagerstown. 34 in manassas. 33 in la plata. So you can see were already close to or below the freezing mark throughout much of the metro area. On satellite and radar, you can see our approaching system. It doesnt look like much. Its not very impressive. This system will mostly miss us off shore, but there is the threat for snow with this system. Im going to show you to different forecast models. This is the north american model. This is the model that by far is giving us the greatest potential for snowfall and i do mean by far, more than any other model that i have seen today. By 5 00 a. M. , its snowing in the beltway throughout Loudoun County and montgomery county. The pink is an indication of maybe a little bit of wintry mix mixing in with the snow. But even as we head into the tail end of the morning commute, the north american model keeps the snow with us. Snow showers still falling by noon on the north american model. When all is said and done from the beltway to southern maryland, the north american model gives us about 2 to maybe even 3 inches. Then theres the 9 futurecast model. You can see that this one keeps the system completely off shore. It doesnt give us any snow other than some flurries in the beltway and points south. So that system is not predicting any snowfall for us whatsoever. So what do we think is going to happen . Heres a breakdown. Well see a face to an inch in the beltway in portions of Loudoun County that include maybe dulles, ashburn, along the i66 corridor and along 270 well see just a trace to an inch of snow. One to two inches, though, in all of southern maryland. That includes all of charles county, most of st. Marys and all of calvert county. You can see that includes southern Prince Georges County as well. And in portions of virginia, including the city of fredricksburg, spotsylvania, maybe even into dale city, one to two inks of snow from this system. Overnight it will definitely be cold enough to support the snowfall. All the way to 17 in leesburg. 18 manassas. 19 andrews and 23 in downtown washington. So over the next three days after these falling temperatures and blustery conditions we have today, tomorrow the passing snow showers. How much snow exactly were going to get as you saw the models very die vary gent here but we think divergent here but we think well end up with an inch of snow just south of the beltway and milder as we head into thursday. In the first alert sevenday forecast, are we looking forward to this or what . As we head into next weekend, temperatures getting close to 50 degrees. Completely dry. A good amount of sunshine. Its going to be great weather to get outside. Stay with us ouch. Celebrating the National Championship last night was a bit painful for some of the ohio state fans.
