Reading, pennsylvanias scrawny spruce was about to be taken down when leaders decided getting rid of that tree just because it is ugly isnt exactly the christmas spirit. We have more. Oh Christmas Tree, o Christmas Tree reporter there was no shortage of holiday tree in the town of reading, pennsylvania. Dozens turned out to give the towns Christmas Tree some much needed love. But this christmas miracle almost wasnt. That tree is not a very good tree for christmas. Im sorry. Reporter the tree was in danger of getting axed. It had droopy branches accused of putting a damper on the holiday spirit. It looks like something you throw out after the season, not before the season. Reporter turns out the scrawny 50foot spruce was actually a lastminute fillin after wet grounds prevented crews from reaching the towns first choice. This Christmas Tree [indiscernible] reporter as crews began taking down the lights and unique pretzel topper calls grew to save the tree. I dont think theres anything wrong with it. I think it is like the rest of the city. It has great character. Reporter City Council Members were on the tree openly debating the trees fate. It sends the wrong message to take down this tree. The message to the world needs to be nobodys perfect. Reporter in the end, officials decided they would keep the spruce. It may not be the flashiest but the town of reading is embracing it, flaws and all. It comes from the heart, not from a pretty or not pretty tree. We think decorated up, fill up the gaps and move forward. Reporter while this tree will be allowed to stand, another more beautiful one, if you will, will be placed at a city park. Meantime, donations are being collected to buy new decorations for this one. Cbs news, reading, pennsylvania. Coming up on wusa9, the fight against isis. Kurds are helping lead the battle this is jim. A man who doesnt stand still. But jim has afib, Atrial Fibrillation an irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. That puts jim at a greater risk of stroke. For years, jims medicine tied him to a monthly trip to the clinic to get his blood tested. But now, with onceaday xarelto®, jims on the move. Jims doctor recommended xarelto®. Like warfarin, xarelto® is proven effective to reduce afibrelated stroke risk. But xarelto® is the first and only onceaday prescription blood thinner for patients with afib not caused by a heart valve problem, that doesnt require regular blood monitoring. So jims not tied to that monitoring routine. Gps proceed to the designated route. Not today. For patients currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. Xarelto® is just one pill a day taken with the evening meal. Plus, with no known dietary restrictions, jim can eat the Healthy Foods he likes. Dont stop taking xarelto®, rivaroxaban, unless your doctor tells you to. While taking xarelto®, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. Xarelto® may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. Xarelto® can cause serious bleeding, and in rare cases, may be fatal. Get help right away if you develop unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. If you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto®, watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. Do not take xarelto® if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. Tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. Some people believe the way he handled the rise of isis led to the resignation of defense secretary chuck hagel yesterday. We have the perspective and impact of the war of isis on the Kurdish People in northern iraq. Thank you for joining us, mr. Mansfield. Your book is called the miracle of the kurds. The situation is so complex that it could be or is it difficult for the United States to define and by extension chuck hagel to define as defense secretary. I wouldnt want to be chuck hagel being stuck between the president s commitment not to put boots on the ground and the challenges that are there. The problem of course is our Foreign Policy has largely been based on dealing with iraq as an entire unit but iraq is imploding. Baghdad is imploding. To the north of the kurds and they have built this marvelous society. They have a viable force. Its a difficult situation to be in. To give people some background on how you were able to come and write this book and do research on the kurds, you live in nashville, tennessee part of the year and you spent a lot of time after the gulf war, the u. S. Military began to relocate a lot of the kurds there. There are more kurds in nashville than any other city in america. As i got to know them and helping organizations, they began to beg us to help their situation in iraq. What were some of the things you think americans might have a misconception regarding the kurds that you have now learned by writing this book . The middle east is not our strong suit as americans. The kurds are very unique. Theyre 90 muslim but a moderate variety because they largely were mistreated by their islamic brothers in the region. So there are people, for example, have a Christian Department in their government. They have women on their supreme court. Women can walk the streets without burkas. Theyre very turned toward israel. Theyre very turned towards democracy and turned toward the United States and western powers. You dont find that very much in the middle east. Theyre the direction we want the middle east to go, particularly the muslim world. Now they are the primary force standing against isis in the field. Theyre considered a United States ally in this particular conflict. Very much so yet were hesitant to support them like we might because were still trying to deal with the bolder iraq and i think that is the failure of our policy. Its could the miracle of the kurds. Thank you for your knowledge. Thank you. Dealing with the first winter storm of the season. For this afternoon a few problems. Clouds, cool. Temperatures steady in the mid to upper 50s. Not a lot of wind. This evening were in the low 50s by 9 00. Well be in the upper 30s by tomorrow morning with some rain to start. But it will change over to snow during the Morning Hours from west to east. Out west you may be all snow starting in the morning with opinion ter storm warnings from northwestern North Carolina into parts of new england. This will feak a very large area will affect a very large area west of i95 for one of the busiest travel days of the year. What a hick. Temps in the 30s in what a headache. Temps in the 30s the mountains. Mid to upper 50s in most spots. 52 in manassas and gaithersburg right now with here in d. C. , again not a bad day to get out of town or whatever. I mean, if you have an early flight, you get out today instead of tomorrow, im be in or drive today than tomorrow, youll be in better shape. The colder air is filtering in behind a front which went through this morning. We have a lot of rain on the front. Well have low pressure spin up. The cold air is coming in from the west and that means snow will be flying tomorrow. Tonight pretty quiet through midnight. After midnight the rains come up from the south. By 2 30, notice the pink area. Thats rain changing to snow, if not all snow in the mountains. Could be a mix early. The rainsnow line marches towards us. 7 00 a wet start in d. C. Im thinking potentially by 9 00, 10 00, were switching over. It is going to be warm enough along the i95 corridor. I think most of this stays meted on the road surfaces melted on the road surfaces. North and west in the higher elevations, this is what were concerned about. Storm pulls out late afternoon, early in the evening. How much snow . Im thinking along and east of i95, maybe nothing sticks here. You go far enough north and west, 4 to 6. I write locally higher. You get 1,000, 1500 feet, if it goes interest west virginia, western virginia, this would not beut of the question 46. A better chance of 2 to 4 in upper montgomery, eastern lou down. Western loudoun, western fauquier county, out toward skyline drive, this is where were picking up the warnings and where we have the 4 to 6 plus totals were expecting during the day tomorrow. A wet snow at that. So certainly could be some that actually sticks to the roadways up there. 58 today. Tonight 39. Tomorrow rain to snow. All snow west. 39. Temperatures steady or falling. Passing snow shower, cold on thanksgiving, 40 degrees. By friday still chilly, 39. Over the weekend, moderation. 52 on saturday. 60 for sunday. Good news for the ravens. They have a home game. Monday still looks good. Highs in the low 60s. Were going to be back with welcome back.
