Motorcyclists are driving into the district to honor victims of the 9 11 attacks. Sky 9 caught a group leaving Fort Washington this morning. Organizers have scheduled an afternoon rally on the national mall. The group portrays the rally as a patriotic effort to never forget the attacks. [ taps ] president obama started out at the white house where the first lady and Vice President biden joined him in observing a moment of silence and the playing of taps. Then the president traveled to the pentagon where a plane hit at 9 37 that morning. There he joined defense secretary chuck hagel and Department Workers to remember the colleagues they lost. This 9 11 anniversary comes just hours after president obama made a speech about a new terror group. The president outlined his plans to combat isis militants in syria and iraq. In a national address, he promised not to commit u. S. Ground troops to another war in iraq, but did outline expanded air strikes, even into syria as well as more humanitarian aid. S. Troops there to 1600. The mornings other top story, a judge in south africa has cleared Oscar Pistorius of all murder charges. But the paraolympic track star could still be convicted of manslaughter for killing his girlfriend on valentines day last year. Cbs correspondent debra patter reports from pitoria, south africa. At the time he fired shots. Reporter Oscar Pistorius sobbed uncontrollable as the judge read the verdict. She said the prosecution did not provide enough evidence to prove he intended to kill his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. The state clearly has not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder. Reporter this entire case hinged on whether the judge believes pistorius story, that he mistakenly shot steenkamp in his home thinking she was a burglar. She said he as a witness was at times evasive but it does the not mean hes guilty of murder. The decision left many in the court stunned including some criminal lawyers believe she made an error in judgment. Pistorius still faces the charge of culpable manslaughter. The judge will deliver that friday. She said she believes he acted negligently when he shot four times into the door killing steenkamp. I believe the accused acted too hastily and used excessive force. Reporter if convicted of manslaughter, it will be up to the judge to decide whether pistorius goes to jail. Researchers around the world are ramping up work to develop new drugs to fight ebola. Among them a scientist at howard university. But his research didnt start out with ebola specifically in mind.
