Back here at home were looking okay this weekend were going to watch a few of these showers and some heavier cells of embedded rain to our southwest make their approach toward us. But in the meantime, we are in the clear just some clouds starting to drift in. So i wanted to give you a quick view of what the scenario looks like here at home. Now were traveling thousands of miles away to the Hawaiian Islands and you can see they are very isolated out here in the middle of the pacific ocean. There is not a well defined eye anymore. And this is the next approaching storm. Thats hurricane julio which as of the latest advisory still a category 3 storm. So it is still packing a punch but right now in the need time frame, were immediate time frame. Were still looking at the very heavy rain impacting the big island of hawaii and you can see the outer bands that are moving toward the other chain of islands and in the center of the big island, theres a 14,000foot peak. So that actually not only diminishes the winds of the storm, but it also really wrings out a lot of that moisture and gets some of that very heavy rainfall which is why they have flooding concerns on big island. But the storm is pulling away and this is local time by the way. 2 00 p. M. Friday local to hawaii. The storm is already out into the ocean and improving weather movings in before julio arrives and well talk about our local forecast and what you can expect this weekend. Coming up. Thanks erica. Mortgage rates are near their low for the year but for some people the question isnt whether to refinance but whether is it time to pay off the mortgage . Joining us is sandra block from kiplingers personal finance and sandra thank you very much for being here. I remember the feeling i had paying off the car note. I cant imagine what it would be like to own the home free and outright. Is it right for everyone . Its good idea for people who are closing in on retirement because think about your home is probably your largest expense. Unless you spend a lot on clothes or something. And so exhausting that paying that off before you go into retirement, means you have a lot more money and a lot more security when you do retire. And its a great feeling. Peace of mind. Absolutely you know paying off the mortgage is something i always associate with parents and grandparents. They did pay off the homes is that the same for this generation . No its not because boomers in particular have refinanced so many times. Moved so many times. You know, my parents lived in the same house most of their adult lives. Thats not true for most of us. And if you move if you refinance, a lot of retirees or preretirees are going in that direction with the mortgage. Its not necessarily a bad thing but its a good goal i think to see if you can get as much of it paid down as possible before you stop working. What other questions should you ask . Well, are there better ways to use your money particularly now when Mortgage Rates are so low. You could perhaps be making more money in the market than youre making youre saving by paying off the mortgage. Thats a big one. And another one is are you contributing to your retirement plans . You know, if youre getting close to retirement, you want to save as much as you can. In a tax efficient way. Maybe thats a better use for your money. And the third thing is you know, you dont have to go one way or the other. Perhaps just accelerate and make larger Monthly Payments towards your mortgage so that youre getting closer to paying it off. By the time youre retired. Good advice, sandra thank much for being with us. Thank you for having me. Youre welcome. Hi there, im first alert meteorologist erica grow. The afternoon is looking good here in the d. C.
