Lets be real. If you dont live in the city of baltimore before today, you likely never heard the name Marilyn Mosby, but if that didnt change this morning, its going to change now. Weve got a lot more about what she had to say today. Jan . Marilyn mosby was detailed this morning in her explanation of charges for filing those against the six officers. She said the officers had not established probable cause to arrest freddie lling it an illegal arrest. Mosby said his manner of death was homicide because of a fatal injury that took place inside that police wagon while he was unrestrained. She talked about the five chances officers had to buckle him up saying that he asked for help, but no one called for it until he was not breathing. The fraternal order of police today said they were shocked by the charges and said it was an egregious rush to judgment. They also asked for a special independent prosecutor earlier this morning because of the ties that mosby has to the gray family attorney and because mosbys husband is a city councilman representing that area. So definitely two schools of thought on those charges today. Reporter thats right, jan, a lot of criticism come her way from the police union and others who arent quite sure she made the right move, but the fact is much of baltimore had been waiting to hear from her and if you did not know her and were not sure who this woman was, you found out this morning. Lets listen to a bit of that press conference. First and foremost, i need to express publicly my deepest sympathies for the family of the loved ones of mr. Freddie gray. I assured his family that no one is above the law and that i would pursue justice on their behalf. To the thousands city residents, community organizers, state and political leaders that chose to march peacefully throughout baltimore, i commend your courage to stand for justice. I also chen the brave men and women both commend the brave men and women both in uniform and out who have stepped up monday night to protect our communities from those who wish to destroy it. As the citys chief prosecutor, ive been sworn to uphold justice and to treat every individual within the jurisdiction of Baltimore City equally and fairly under the law. I take this oath seriously and i want the public to know that my administration is committed to creating a fair and equitable Justice System for all. This is a tremendous responsibility, about the one that ive sought and accepted when the citizens of Baltimore City elected me as a states attorney and its precisely what i did in the case of freddie gray. With the medical examiners determination that mr. Grays death was a homicide which we received today has led us to believe that we have probable cause to file criminal charges. While each of these officers are presumed innocent until proven guilty, we have brought the following charges. Officer goodson is charged with Second Degree depraved heart murder, involuntary manslaughter, Second Degree negligent assault, manslaughter by vehicle by means of gross negligence, manslaughter by vehicle by means of criminal negligence, misconduct in office for failure to secure prisoner, failure to render aid. Officer William Porter is being charged with involuntary manslaughter, assault in the Second Degree, misconduct in office. Lieutenant brian rice is being charged win voluntary manslaughter with involuntary manslaughter, assault in the Second Degree, misconduct in office, false imprisonment. Officer edward niro is being charged with assault in the Second Degree intentional, assault in the Second Degree negligent, misconduct in office, false imprisonment. Officer Garrett Miller is being charged with intentional assault in the Second Degree, assault in the Second Degree, negligence, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. Sergeant alicia white is being charged with manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, Second Degree assault, misconduct in office. To the people of baltimore and the demonstrators across america, i heard your call for no justice no peace. Your peace is sincerely needed as i work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man. To those that are angry, hurt or have their own experiences of injustice at the hands of Police Officers, i urge you to channel the energy peacefully as we prosecute this case. I have heard your calls for no justice no peace. However, your peace is sincerely needed as i work to deliver justice on behalf of freddie gray. To the rank and file officers of the Baltimore City police department, please know that these accusations of these six officers are not an indictment on the entire force. I come five generations of Law Enforcement. My father was an officer. My mother was an officer. Several of my aunts and uncles, my recently departed and beloved grandfather was one of the founding members of the First Black Police organization in massachusetts. I can tell you that the actions of these officers will not and should not in any way damage the important working relationship between police and prosecutors as we continue to fight together to reduce crime in baltimore. Thank you for your courage, commitment and sacrifice for the betterment of our community. Last but certainly not least, to the youth of this city, i will seek justice on your behalf. This is a moment. This is your moment. Lets insure that we have peaceful and productive rallies that will develop structural and systemic changes for generations to come. Youre at the forefront of this cause and as young people our time is now. [ cheering and applause ] reporter while some washingtonians may be surprised to hear such tough talk about the cops from a prosecutor who has to work so closely with them, people in baltimore not as surprised because you consider the platform the woman ran on. She ran on at least in part a Police Accountability platform. She took office just a few months ago and today we are learning a lot more obviously about ms. Mosby. Thats right, derek. Mosby is just four months into her job and she finds herself in the national spotlight. So who is the woman in charge of the freddie gray investigation . No one is above the law. Marilyn mosby is the youngest chief prosecutor in any major american city. Shes 35 years old and this is her first elected post. To the youth of this city, i will seek justice on your behalf. This is a moment. This is your moment. Mosby ran on a platform of transparency cracking down on violent repeat offenders and promising to be more aggressive on Police Misconduct. Ive been sworn to uphold justice and to treat every individual within the jurisdiction of Baltimore City equally and fairly under the law. I take this oath seriously and i want the public to know that my administration is committed to creating a fair and equitable Justice System for all no matter what your occupation, your age, your race, your color or your creed. Shes a gnash native of bostons inner city and at age 6 she attended a civil rights class and was quoted as saying after that experience i knew i want the to be around attorney. Shes the wanted to be an attorney. Shes the first in her family to go to college, bachelor of arts degree from Tuskegee University and then Boston College of law. She clerked for the u. S. Attorneys office in d. C. And she comes from a long line of Law Enforcement officers. My father was an officer. My mother was an officer. Several of my aunts and uncles, my recently departed and beloved grandfather was one of the founding members of the First Black Police organization in massachusetts. Mosby had a personal tragedy while growing up in boston. Her 17yearold cousin was mistaken for a drug dealer and killed right outside of her house by another 17yearold. Mosby has two young daughters and is married to Baltimore City councilman in that area. Reporter another thing you may not know about ms. Mosby is she lives here in the city of baltimore, not too far from the mall where so much trouble broke out earlier this week. The name of her neighborhood is reservoir hill. Our own mola lenghi spoke to people who know her well and can tell us more about exactly what she brings to the table and why shes doing what shes doing. Reporter we talked to some of those folks, some of the neighbor and folks who have worked closely with her, none of whom seem surprised by her announcement today or how she came to her decision. When Ronald Harris moved next door to Marilyn Mosby, she immediately made an impression. My wife and i first bought this house, they were the first people to introduce theirself to us. Shes been an awesome neighbor. Shes a family oriented person. Shes great in the community. Reporter Sheryl Harris has lived nextdoor to mosby 10 years watching the 35yearold grow and draw widespread praise today for her leadership and stern action, no surprise to neighbors, though it was a surprise to the Baltimore Police union who said mosbys decision to charge the officers was an egregious rush to judgment. Former maryland congressman and former naacp president disagrees saying mosby is driven by a desire for fairness. I think shes very thorough. I think shes a very fair person, very strong woman. I believe shes looking for justice. Reporter mosbys father, mother and grandfather all Police Officers, so when mosby vowed to be more aggressive on Police Misconduct as states attorney, perhaps she was well suited to make such promises. Mrs. Lucas got to know mosby during her campaign and points to her roots in bostons inner city. She has been through the same thing that a lot of people have went through in baltimore. Reporter something that we heard over and over today, the more people we talked to, the more people would tell us watch out for Marilyn Mosby. They say she is going places whether it is in this city or beyond, four months into her term, still a lot of work to do before achieving some of the goals she set out before her. She is receiving a lot of praise for the way she has handled this thus far. Back to you, derek. Reporter shes certainly become a National Figure and as we watch this unfold it will be months before we know how these trials will turn out. In the meantime folks in baltimore are very excited about the announcement today. As a matter of fact, in a street behind me here you can see that from this video well show you now a whole parade of cars went by, folks very excited hanging out of windows, roofs, flashing lights, honking horns. It was definitely a celebration, very much a turn around from the moods earlier this week and Marilyn Mosby is the recipient of that thanks. I love her. Baltimore loves her. Shes an intelligent young beautiful black woman that was not scared to make it be known that shes charging these killer cops with homicide. When i heard the lady speak, i cried. I feel like that just everything would change, everything would change because she probably got it right. The whole prosecution throughout the other states, the ones that had similar situations, always ended up getting it wrong. She got this one right. Reporter well hear from moseley in a couple of mosby one on one in a couple of minutes. Today as Marilyn Mosby laid out the charge against the six officers in the freddie gray case, she may be anxious to get justice for some of the people of the city, but she must fairly apply that same principle to the officers shes now charged with prosecuting. Lesli foster joins me to talk about the balancing act of bringing this case to trial. Theres still a long way to go in all this. As we know, these are just the very first steps in this process. Mosby has assembled a team that has experience in handling cases that involve Police Officers. As chief prosecutor, though, shes got to insure there is fairness for all. Listen to what she said at her press conference earlier today. I hope that as we move forward with this case, everyone will respect due process and refrain from doing anything that would jeopardize our ability to seek justice. I talked with Angela Alsobrooks today, the Prince Georges County states attorney, and she says every prosecutor wants to get it right and bring healing, but alsobrooks says there is pressure in a case like this, especially one that unfolds under the bright lights of the national spotlight. The community is dependenting on mosby to bring justice, but she also represents those officers, too. They are obligated to have a fair trial, to be provided with every bit of evidence and she is the chief prosecutor for the entire city. So justice cannot be one sided. And shes so new to this, too shes never prosecuted anything four months into the job. How this plays out. It will be. A lot of people in baltimore knows who she is, but most of us are just finding out. She said earlier today fairness is at her core. Fairness needs to be part of this process and this process could be long and drawn out. We know she was an attorney for an Insurance Company before holding this position, but before that did she have any prosecutorial experience at all . She clerked in the u. S. Attorneys offices both here and in baltimore and she has had a strong platform of wanting to have police reform. So she has that at her core. Again she has assembled a team that knows how to deal with these cases quite well and she has clear confidence in them and for now she has clear confidence in a good deal of the community of baltimore. Our coverage of the Baltimore Police charges and Marilyn Mosby is not over yet. Derek . Reporter thats right, jan. Weve been talking about Marilyn Mosby. You saw her press conference this morning, but hear from her from her mouth this evening about where she wants to take baltimore moving forward. Baltimores top prosecutor Marilyn Mosby is the woman of the hour. She is the interview Everyone Wants and cnns don lemon managed to snag it. This has been a really important its been a tough time for you. You are under the microscope in the spotlight. I dont think its tough. The people of baltimore voted for me to do my job and to carry out justice and thats what im going to do as the states attorney for baltimore talk about whats happening now, what you just did. You just completed your investigation. Its left you with no doubt these six officers are responsible for freddie grays death . I cant really get into the specifics of the case, but as a prosecutor, you should not bring charges if you dont believe that you have probable cause that the individuals are responsible for the charges. There was a collective cheer probably around the nation, but also during the press conference. You spoke directly to young people, but you also spoke to the Police Officers as well. You come from a Law Enforcement family. Was it difficult to is it difficult to balance that . No. I think it gives me a well rounded perspective. I come from five generations of Police Officers, so Law Enforcement is instilled. I understand the time, the commitment, the sacrifice that these Police Officers make time away from their families on a day to day basis, you know, risking their lives for the betterment of our community, but at the same time recognizing that these officers are making those sacrifices and im not saying in particularly with this case, those officers that usurp their authority, you have to be able to hold them accountable because it does a disservice to the really hard working Police Officers. So for me its about applying justice fairly and equally to those with or without a badge. Reporter she believes in holding them accountable, to be fair to everyone, player music hey let me help with that. Oh, thank you music introducing the oneandonly Volkswagen Golf sportwagen. The sportier utility vehicle. Moments after she announced the charges Marilyn Mosby garnered plenty of emotion on the internet. Marilyn mosby is a top trend on facebook and twitter. Leanne tweeted Marilyn Mosby strong, successful black woman, annex lent example that you can succeed an excellent example that you can succeed in anything you put your mind to and another, when my daughter grows up my she be just like Marilyn Mosby.
