When we come back, well look at the wind gusts and how it will feel as youre standing out there at the bus stop or getting into the car tomorrow morning coming up with the first alert sevenday forecast. Lets get a realtime look at the Road Conditions from our mobile newsroom. Scott broom has been cruising the streets and he has literally the word from the road. We thought we were going to get about an inch, maybe 3 but keeps coming down. Reporter morning gridlock and the plows expected to clear the roads stuck in the very same crawling traffic. I dont like it. Reporter predictable results like this spun out truck near frederick. By declaring a twohour delay for schools in front county officials bought some time to assess the deteriorating situation in Montgomery County officials bought some time to assess the deteriorating situation. Im a teacher, very happy i didnt drive to work. Now a lot of those commuter routes got pretty slammed this morning. Police closed connecticut avenue just outside the beltway briefly when a power pole snapped and sent wires into the road. In kensington a Police Officer was actually pushing cars to get them up a slick hill. On viers mill road one minivan slid out and a bunch of other cars slammed into it. A couple guys said it took them five hours to get from baltimore to ken kensington. Its just a few kensington. Its just a few inches of snow and its taken 10 times as long as it usually does. Many of the main roads are down to bare pavement and the sun this afternoon certainly helped, but any snow on the side streets could refreeze overnight creating some different troubles tomorrow morning. Loudoun County School officials have been getting an earful from angry parents over their decision to open in the admittedly nasty weather. The schools Public Information officer explains look, it was a tough call and we had to make it at the last minute. If you cancel suddenly, parents have daycare issues. Youre sending Children Home to unsupervised homes. You have people interrupting their commute trying to get back to loudoun county. So realize this is a human decision and no decision is perfect when its made by a human being. Turns out even some of the districts most experienced bus drivers were so shocked classes were not canceled authorities with loudoun County School say theyve heard the message from parents loud and clear. Meantime in Fairfax County Public Schools now admit they made a mistake when they kept schools open even though the snow was falling hard and making the commute a pretty dangerous one for a lot of folks. Debra alfarone spoke to the schools superintendent this afternoon and also talked to parents and students and joins us from School Headquarters with the fallout and what they learned today. Deb . Reporter i can tell you that superintendent karen garza admits they made the wrong call. Theyre sorry and say they learned a lot. Many people would give credit when someone does actually admit a mistake, but the twitter sphere is not letting up. Were letting you talk. Parents, teachers and students youll hear from first and then youll hear superintendent garza respond. It was a bad commute this morning, one of the worst ones ever. This was not that much snow, but it was very wet and icy. I definitely think they should have closed it off at least had to delay because none of the roads were taken care of. What i dont agree with is their bending to peer pressure and the parents to close after school activities. Look at the roads. Theyre fine. The decision was made with the best information we had at the time. Its obvious now the decision was not the right one and certainly we regret all the challenges that were created. We are evaluating how the decision was made and in the future well make adjustments to that process to ensure this doesnt happen again. Reporter damage was done on twitter. The closefcps was trending all day and the topic even made it to buzz feed. Debra alfarone, wusa9. I know what you may be thinking. What about the commute tomorrow morning . Our other top story, today a judge sentenced former Virginia Governor Bob Mcdonnell to two years in prison for federal corruption. Peggy fox has been covering this story from the very beginning. She joins us live from richmond with more on what the former governor said as he left the courthouse. Reporter i can tell you this. Family and friends are relieved with this two year sentence. It could have been much higher. The judge said he was using his discretion, although he said he needed to give a significant sentence because he said while it may have been Bob Mcdonnells wife who allowed the serpent into the mansion, meaning Jonnie Williams who gave those bribes, the judge said it was the governor who permitted the snake to get in his business. I want to thank the court and judge spencer for the mercy he dispensed to me today. Reporter a twoyear sentence was far below original guidelines of at least 10 years behind bars for 11 counts of corruption. Some of the judgments that i have made during the course of my governorship have hurt myself, my family and my beloved people of virginia and for that i am deeply, deeply sorry. Reporter the government asked judge James Spencer for at least 6 1 2 years. Its important for the public to have confidence that when someone receives payments, when someone receives gifts in exchange for public actions, that those are bribes and it will be pursued. Reporter when judge spencer read the sentence, there was no sobbing, only some smiles from supporters and family members. I love bob. I believe in bob. I know that hes innocent and i was anxious to tell virginia. Reporter judge spencer said he took into account mcdonnells military service and the sentiment from the hundreds of supporters who said he was a good and decent man, but the judge said he could not ignore the evidence, nor the verdict and a price must be paid. I think ultimately he said that Bob Mcdonnell did commit a crime, that Bob Mcdonnell did in some way sell the office, but at the same time i think that judge spencer was never convinced perhaps that Bob Mcdonnell gave Jonnie Williams much of anything, that the act was so explicit that he clearly betrayed the office of the governor. Reporter mcdonnells wife who was here today will be sentenced next month. The former governor has been ordered to report to prison february 9th. Governor Bob Mcdonnell maintains his innocence. He says he disagrees with the verdict and they are appealing the convictions and hoping they will be overturned. And hes hoping to remain out on bond penning that appeal. Well hear from more family members coming up at 7 00. For now im peggy fox reporting live in richmond. Back to you. Word of the mcdonnell sentence hit social media instantly, of course. Folks are commenting both there and to our Stephanie Ramirez who was out in arlington today talking with folks about the outcome. Reporter im Stephanie Ramirez at the virginia Square George Mason University metro stop where there are a lot of folks coming through here and also a lot of opinions on former governor Bob Mcdonnells sentencing today. Im not trying to throw anybody in jail, but two years, it seems like what he did was pretty wrong. It sounds like maybe theres a political favor somewhere. He should be punished, but i think two years is fair. I think three years would have been better i think. Wasnt really upsetting because politician. Reporter its a shame, though. Thats the way it is. Hes a politician. Thats what we expect. Weve become expecting that from our politicians. I hope it will prompt them to get some ethic rules in the assembly. Right now weve got a lot of mistrust in both officials elected and people who are appointed to protect us. So i think its a good thing for once to see someone finally facing some kind of justice. Until the people really understand the power of the vote and the power they truly have and decide that we as a people decide to clean up government, this is going to go on throughout history. Thats just kind of how it is. Reporter we saw this at the courthouse today but not so much here. That was support for former governor Bob Mcdonnell. A lot of folks out here are definitely interested in the sentencing his wife will soon face. In virginia, Stephanie Ramirez, wusa9 news. Now heres wusa9 first alert weather. We called it a yellow alert day, but when i woke up this morning and looked out the window, i said this might be a red alert day. Not a red alert day. Lets not say that. Okay. It was a little rougher than we thought. It was certainly rougher than we thought it was going to be as far as accumulation, but we nailed the timing, hit it right on the head, intense during the morning rush. 5 to 10 a. M. Was the worst. We said that over and over again, but the thing that kind of really got me was the ratio of liquid equivalent to snowfall. Thats where things got a little bit messy and we ended up with more snow than we expected. Lets look at a little graphic i made up. We got 2. 4 inches at Reagan National but that was only 0. 2 inches of liquid equivalent. At dulles 4. 2inch of snow fell, but that was only 0. 28 inches of liquid equivalent. So youre talking about a ratio of liquid to snow of about 15 1. So if that was just. 1inch of rain, it would end up as 1. 5 inches of snow. I was trying to nail down for you how much snow you were going to get to within a few hundredths of an inch of liquid equivalent and im sorry, i didnt get it right, but hopefully things are looking up for you. Temperatures will head down. Right now it is 31 degrees, partly cloudy, winds light out of the west at 5 miles an hour. Well see some refreezing tonight. Retreating some of those surfaces is a good idea because not all the salt and brine will be in place. Wednesday it will be windy and cold. In fact, those winds will gust in excess of 40 Miles Per Hour at times. We could even see a lake effect snow shower with those strong winds from the north pulling down some of that moisture from lake erie and ontario and heading into thursday the wind relaxes, but temperatures will be even colder. As were looking at satellite and radar, you can see the clipper system has moved offshore. Now were looking at just partly cloudy skies. The feels like forecast is the big issue that we have moving forward. So as youre stepping out the door tomorrow morning, its going to feel like its in the upper teens in the beltway, but only 9 in gaithersburg, 5 in hagerstown, 8 in winchester and the wind chill gets even worse as we head into the afternoon. It will feel like 7 in manassas as you head home, 2 in westminster, 9 in downtown d. C. , 7 in la plata. The wind chill gets even more brutal heading into thursday morning. Wind chills will drop into the negative numbers for most of the metro area. So that people like forecast is going to be brutal and you need to take some precautions as temperatures will be falling into the teens overnight. You want to leave those Cabinet Doors open if you have an older house and the pipes are susceptible to freezing. Leave the water running at a trickle to mitigate against the risk for pipes freezing and make sure to bring your pets inside. If you have a dog that spends most of its time outdoors, bring him inside. He need lots of water and keep space heaters away from curtains and any other loose arms that might be around the house. Overnight it will get breezy, partly to mostly cloudy, 20 to 26 for your overnight lows, winds northwest 10 to 15, but in the morning the winds get stronger, 15 to 25 Miles Per Hour and gusting higher. A few flurries are possible wednesday morning, but the main concern is in the afternoon. A snow shower is possible, wind chills in the Single Digits with a high between 25 and 30, winds out of the north, northwest 20 to 30 mileper hour and gusting higher than that. The worst day as far as needing to take those precautions against pipes freezing and everything, an overnight low of 14 wednesday night. Thursday well rebound to 26 for your afternoon high, a little better as we head into next weekend and the first alert sevenday forecast bringing our temperatures back to where they should be this time of year, but it will stay dry until next workweek.
