In the last month three high profile arrests, one for snapping semi nude photos of a teen runaway, a second for running a teen prostitution ring and in this quiet neighborhood of accokeek, a third for trying to kill his wife. Today mpd chief cathy lanier was in the hot seat explaining what she said is the stories behind those headlines. The vast majority of the cases are alcoholrelated traffic offenses, dui probably the single largest represented case. Reporter Council Member tommy wells hammered the chief with questions. Lanier insists the force does a lot to police itself and that its tougher than ever to become an officer here. We have a very, very strong screening process thats been in place now. Weve added things to it in the last five years, but as of right now we have one of the toughest processes to screen officers to come on that i know of. Reporter but perhaps the biggest bombshell from this 2 1 2 hour hearing, the force could soon become equipped with body cameras. They seem to be the single best indicator for insuring that you have high levels of accountability. Reporter we could see about 800 of those 4,000 fever hundred officers wearing cameras in the first those 4,500 officers wearing cameras in the first year. Breaking news right now in gaithersburg, thats where Police Believe speed was a factor in a deadly crash this afternoon on muncaster mill road. As we understand it, we had two cars traveling down muncaster mill in this direction. Theyre just about a block a we from me now. The road narrows here. There was some kind of crash at that point where the road narrows and we understand that there two pedestrians that were also struck. We understand one of those pedestrians is a 13yearold girl, although police are not confirming the age at this point. One of those two pedestrians was killed. There were three people in the two different cars. They have all been taken to the hospital. We understand that they are not in as severe of condition as the pedestrians. Im joined now by captain jim daley from the Montgomery County police. Understand both these vehicles going in the same direction. You say speed looks like it was a factor. Do we know what they were racing . We dont know at this point if they were drag racing. We do know speed was a factor. The character of the roadway is such that it narrows from two lanes to one lane. We have other witnesses in the area and theyre currently being interviewed. We hope they can professor us with information that provide us with information that will lead us to what happened prior to this collision. Reporter we understand all the people involved, the two pedestrians and the three people in the vehicle are all high school aged. Do we know any more about them . Our collision reconstruction unit is out here now identifying, collecting and analyzing both roadway evidence and evidence within the vehicles.
