Now, i say continued because these protests have been going on for the past couple of days. The march for marriage on the National Mall started on saturday and they are the opponents of gay marriage. They say god established marriage between a man and a woman and the government cannot redefine it. While supporters are hoping for what they call marriage equality. Its all in anticipation for tuesdays arguments. The cases will come from michigan, tennessee, kentucky and ohio. The justices will hear arguments for these two questions. One, whether samesex marriage couples will have the constitutional right to marry. And two, whether states must recognize samesex marriages from other states. Again, today we expect a lot of protesters and a lot of rallies here outside the Supreme Court but those arguments dont start until tomorrow. A doving story, the death toll in the Nepal Earthquake is edging close to 4,000 people and expected to climb higher than that. Search and rescue teams are on the way from across the globe. We did have earlier issues going on around sycamore street still causing delays. Once you get past sycamore street to washington boulevard, youll have no problemsonce you get past that issue. For those of you traveling northbound on 95 from courthouse road to backlick road, youre looking at a 30 minute commute. The three lane construction has begun. The three lanes in each direction will be reduced to two while ddot repairs the bridge. The project will benefit pedestrians as well as drivers. Workers plan to expand and repair the crumbling pedestrian walkways. When you hear about a 14 foot pedestrian multipurpose walkway, its better than what they have now. The 31. 5 million project will take three years to complete. The goal is for it to be done by may 2018. Metro will enforce new measures to make sure transit riders pay for train and bus tickets. This effort comes after last months stabbing after manager at the stadium armory station. Police say 20yearold Melissa Langley of southeast attacked the manager with a knife after he told her she couldnt ride for free. The crackdown will start with a twoweek warning period. In the news right now, its been two and a half years since a gunman went on a shooting rampage inside a colorado Movie Theater. Today is the day we finally hear Opening Statements in the case of james holmes. Holmes is charged with murdering 12 people and wounding 70 more. As Omar Villafranca reports, prosecutors are expected to argue that holmes planned attack. Reporter 12 jurors and 12 alternates will begin hearing the case against james holmes later today. In july 2012, police say hole him started firing inside an aurora colorado Movie Theater during a midnight showing of the dark knight rises. He was dressed in body armor and many of the victims thought he was wearing a costume as part of a publicity stunt. [ stand by for captions ] jurors will have to decide if homes was legally insane at the time of the shooting. The defense argues homes cant get a fair trial because of the extensive publicity but the judge refused to move it to another county. For victims and the families of those who died, moving past the massacre has not been easy. Marcus weaver was shot inside the theater and will testify at the trial. It wears on you and people dont understand that a lot of us have ptsd and all these things that are caused by the absences of one person. Holmes parents have publicly begged prosecutors to consider a plea deal that would take the Death Penalty off the table. Omar villafranca, cbs news, centennial, colorado. The judge says he believes the jurors will be fair and impartial. Some 9,000 people were summoned as potential jurors and the judge interviewed hundreds of them. Dzhokhar tsarnaevs lawyers will be arguing that tsarnaev should be sentenced to life in prison, not death for his role in the deadly attack. The defense is expected to try to hiewpize tsarnaev and prove he was heavily influenced by his older brother tamerlan. Lawyers for john hinckley, jr. Will be back in court arguing that their client is all better and should go free. This is the fourth day of hearings. Lawyers for the man who tried to kill president reagan are asjudge to let him live fulltime at his mothers hope in williamsburg, virginia. Right now hinckley lives at st. Meantime investigators now believe an Alexandria Hotel fire that sent 200 people running for their lives was caused by an electrical problem. It happened at the quality inn on richmond highway. Two people ended up being injured, one of them a firefighter. Witnesses describe hearing up to four explosions before the fire. We thought actually it was like gunfire because this area is really not safer so we laid on the floor. A spokesperson for the red cross said the organization assisted about a hundred people getting the desks into rooms at some of the hotels next door. This as police wind down their internal investigation. We now know the 25yearolds voice box was crushed along with his spine. He died a week after his arrest. The Police Commissioner confirming gray was not secured in the police van and during one of the many stops, officers had to pick him up off the floor. Saturday a massive rally was tainted by a handful of protesters would were Looting Stores and smashing out car windows. Police arrested 35 people, some juveniles and even some members of the media. Those journalists were released and the city apologized. There are several investigations under way including a Justice Department civil rights probe and of course this internal investigation by Baltimore City police. That will wrap up on friday. Also happening today, Loretta Lynch will be sworn in as the new attorney general. Vice president joe bide listen preside over the ceremony. The Senate Finally voted to confirm lynch last week five and a half months after president obama nominated her. Lynch is the first black woman to be attorney general. She was previously the u. S. Arguments insides the high court over gay marriage wont start till tomorrow morning but the heated debate will continue outside today and i say continue because these protests and rallies both for and against gay marriage have been going on for a couple of days now. It all the Supreme Court will hear arguments over same sex marriage tomorrow and itself cases come from tennessee, ohio, kentucky and michigan. The justices will hear hours of arguments on these two questions. One, do samesex couples have a right to marry and two, do states have to recognize same sex marriages that are performed in a different state. Among those arguing will be the u. S. Solicitor general don v. A. Rely junior. There will also be attorneys from the states where the cases originated. Turning our attention to the race for the white house in campaign 2016, the Clinton Foundation says mistakes were made involving how it disclosed its donors. The problem is government grants were not properly identified on the organizations tax returns. The returns are now likely to be amended. Theres no word if this will impact Hillary Clintons president ial campaign. A facetoface meeting is planned today between secretary of state john kerry and irans foreign minister. The subject will be how to finalize a plan to address Irans Nuclear program. The meeting with the foreign minister will take place in new york. The deadline for an agreement is at the end of june. There are conflicting reports this morning about who is responsible for an attack north of damascus, syria. Initial reports said it was the work of israeli fors but a hebrew language website now claims it was Syrian Rebels who carried out the assault. Prepare for some major delays if you take the Old Washington boulevard bridge over route 110 in arlington. Construction on the bridge began earlier this morning. The three lanes in each direction will now be reduced to two. The bridge was built in 1941 and vdot spokesman mike murphy says its seen better days. Its not, you know, unsafe to drive on but it needs to be replaced sooner rather than later. Were telling people just to expect about a 10minute delay. The new bridge will still be three lanes each way, but it will be 9 feet wider with pedestrian walkways on both sides. The 31. 5 million project will take three years to complete. The goal is to be done by may of 2018. A Police Crackdown on fair jump fare jumpers begins today at metro stayses and bus stops. Metro Transit Police are going to be looking for people who dont pay for train or bus rides. The effort comes after last months stabbing of a manager at the stadium armory station. Police say 20yearold Melissa Langley of southeast attacked a manager with a knife after he told her she couldnt ride for free. This crackdown has a twoweek warning period. Taking a trip to Shenandoah National park is going to cost you a little more this weekend. Fee increases are being implemented in two stages. On friday the fee for an annual park pass goes up from 30 to 40. One week fees for cars and motor psyche cams also jump 5 on friday.
