Were following a developing story out of san jose, california. Police are searching for a man suspected of shooting and killing a Police Officer. Late last night officers answered a call about an armed Man Threatening to kill himself. When they got there the gunman shot and killed a Police Officer and then took off. Police are now looking for 57 yard scott dunham. I can assure you and assure our community that this investigation will continue until this person is apprehended. The officer was a 12year veteran of the San Jose Police department. The Justice Department is weighing in on the ongoing debate about the Redskins Team name. Delia goncalves is live in our Satellite Center. Delia, whats the Justice Departments view on this debate . Reporter its a big one. Its going to impact a lot of fans out there who support the name and those who oppose the name. Heres the news. The doj agreed to strip the trademark of the Washington Redskins meaning that the team can still use its logo and name but now so can anyone else. The deal calls the redskins fight baseless and a, quote, tortured effort. The u. S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the teams trademark about last year calling it disparaging to native americans. The team appealed that decision. Owner dan snyder vowed to never change the name claiming it honors the history of native americans but the doj says its not the intent but the impact of the name that matters most. All right, delia, thank you. Police say they have now made an arrest in the stabbing death of a case in greenbelt. The murder happened last night at a home in the 9100 block of edmonston road. Detectives say they found a 38 yearold man lying on the the living room couch suffering from stab wounds to the neck. The man later died. The suspect also 38 years old was arheed right on the scene. Arrested right on the scene. No word on a motive yet. Weather conditions are hampering the search of a 5 yearold virginia boy. His name is noah thomas. When his mother woke up sunday, noah has disappeared from their home. Theres no sign of foul play but the longer he is missing, the less likely it is that noah will be found alive. This afternoon the widow of a man murdered last month inside the Donovan Hotel is expected to speak for the first time. Nikki burdine is live in northwest d. C. Outside the Donovan Hotel. Nikki, its been a month. Any developments in this case yet . Reporter no, no new developments, no updates in this case. Its been more than a month since David Messerschmitt was found stabbed to death here inside the Donovan Hotel. Now, messerschmitt was a d. C. Attorney. He lived in d. C. With his wife and he worked at the dla piper law firm. On february 10 he was found lying face down on a bed here with multiple stab wounds to his back. Almost immediately after d. C. Police released this Surveillance Video of a person of interest, you can see that person going up and down the stairs of the hotel at one point covering their face but still police have not been able to identify this person. In fact, its hard to tell if its a man or a woman. Messerschmitt was also married and today his wife kim vuong will be making a statement to the police. We still dont know exactly what she will say but no doubt she wants closure and she wants justice for her husband who was murdered here more than a month ago. Coming up at 6 30, ill tell you why d. On monday the Justice Department filed paperwork supporting a move to end the teams trademark rights. Delia goncalves is live in the Satellite Center with more on this latest development. Its a big blow to the team. Reporter its huge. There will be a lot of repercussions and no doubt theyre trying to figure out their next move at this point in the game. The redskins, their trademark stripped. They can still use their name and the logo but now so can anyone else. The law says they no longer have exclusive rights to the name redskins. The team cited freedom of speech when it appealed an earlier decision by the u. S. Patent and Trademark Office to strip its trademark. The First Amendment right does not play a factor here. The doj arks the trademark is not protected as private expression and since registering a trademark uses public funds, it cannot be offensive or degrading. Owner dan snyder claims the name honors the history of native americans but that did not fly with the doj and they went back to the law that says intent does not matter. What does matter is the impact of the name. According to the doj, the impact deeply negative on the native american community. I can tell you this fight is not over. Well still continue.
