Its going to be breezy winds out of the northwest at 1020 Miles Per Hour but nice and pleasant with a high of 85 co degrees, mike and andrea back to you. Advocates and elected officials in Montgomery County say buses are the solution to traffic congestion. But some commuters are concerned a plan for bus only lanes will drive them crazy. Wusa 9 transportation reporter martin decaro take assist look at a plan for the regions first bus Rapid Transit system for brt for short. Reporter its your typical commute through downtown bethesda. Stop and go. Stop and go. Theres got to be a better way, right . Would you take an express bus all the way downtown . Id consider it. Montgomery county believes this is the answer. This is not your grandfathers bus were talking about. This is a different kind of system. At 60 feet long and capable of carrying 75100 passengers this type of bus could be part of the counties future 80mile bus Rapid Transit system. Transit advocate explains how they work. These are buses that run in their own dedicated lanes. They have low level platforms that you pay your fare before you get on them. The county has plans for seven Rapid Transit bus lines, two are priorities, route 29 to the Silver SpringTransit Center and route 355 to the beth da metro station. The county is thinking about a bus Rapid Transit system that could potentially take this car lane and make it a bus only lane. The idea being instead of 100 cars carrying 100 people youd have one bus carrying 100 people. It would be a little tough for traffic i think. That perception is what brt supporters like Montgomery County councilman say they have to counter. What were going to do is look at every intersection, do the analysis and see what impact it will have on traffic and do the analysis is are we moving more or less people. Most of the planned brt network would be made up of new lanes only in places like bethesda where theres no room to widen the road. And the key for bus Rapid Transit is the rapid part and you dont get rapid without dedicated lanes. Brt is still a good three to four years away, a long wait for commuters tired of waiting for the light to turn green. Wusa 9. Whose not tired of that. Its an example of timesaving brt reporters say a trip from Silver Springs to rockville takes about 79 minutes right now and it would only take 46 minutes with the brt system and they say its cheaper to build a metro rail. Just 15 30 million per mile and its much more per rail. Maybe the Silver Springs transit will be up and ready. Could be. It is 6 13. Here is another look at the question of the morning. According to our recent survey the majority of people say this makes them feel more romantic. Is it a falling snow, b chocolate or c lit candles . Or dr. pizza, just kidding. Were hoping for a bounce back in the markets today. Things are looking better overseas. Most of the asian and european markets are headed in the right direction. The three major u. S. Exchanges all closed down slightly yesterday. The dow slipped nine points to close at 16, 550, s p dropped three points and nasdac was down 12. Well, its the first of its kind in north america and it just happens to be in southwest virginia. The volvo truck plant in dublin just opened its first test site that allows potential drivers to test drive those big rigs. Reporter Orlando Salina got behind the wheel. Reporter i am a little scared, hopping independent side this truck and taking it for a test spin never happened before in north america. I have never driven a truck before and this is more than a truck. This is a beast. Its taken about a year but finally the Customer Experience track is open at the volvo truck plant in dublin. Put a little bit of fear into jenkins, hes going to buckle up anyway. This test track will bring more business. Inside that track, we have the off road section. Its about eight miles long, it has steep hill climb and a couple of other features, so it is designed to show our customers how good our products really are tuesday was a big day for volvo. The pitch is this truck up to a point will simulate real World Driving conditions. Even the governor jumped inside a rig. Ive driven one of these before. The paved course lets drivers rev all the way up to highway speeds. Guess what im doing. I am now taking this truck on a 1. 1mile road track built by the men and women here at volvo. They refused to go outside to have this track built. The challenge, it says, was already here. Im an engineer, and these guys have construction experience operating experience and this team built this track. The inside of this 2014 volvo beast looks like that of a luxury van. I know youre thinking no way but its true. Fully automatic, no clutch. Lars bloomberg who sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger says once clients tryout this new track, they say it. Ill be back. Thats neat. Beep beep. No its boring if its not stick shift. The first time you get behind something that big you dont want to make it a little easier. Thats a good point. I parallel parked a moving truck so i have some skills just got to say. Take it away in weather then. Im not sure if im as skilled in the Weather Department but we do have a lot of sunshine moving in after yesterdays heaheavy rainfall and breezes from the northwest brings in dryer air for us as well, less humid air. Starting off with a look at the michael and son weather cam hard to tell from this shot at Regan National air for that the sunshine is really starting to build in. We have lots of high clouds in the Early Morning hours but within the next hour or two, its just sunshine. 73 degrees at 9 00 and notice those winds increasing, northwesterly at about 12 Miles Per Hour by noon gusts will we higher than that by noon 79 degrees, our High Temperature 85 at about 3 00 and then 5 00 down to 83 degrees with those Winds Continuing out of the west and northwest. Current temperature is 70 degrees in gaithersburg and fredrick, 68 in hagerstown, its 66 in manassas, tomorrow morning those temperatures are going to be 510 degrees cooler than where we are right now so some refreshing changes are ahead in firseven day forecast. Satellite and radar the 12 hour loop shows that to the north and east, the secondary line of storms that topper was tracking for you yesterday evening at even spauned a Tornado Warning up here and that didnt produce a tornado thankfully but we have that Severe Weather in association with yesterdays frontal system. Now on 9 future cast were just tracking the cloud cover moving out and the refreshing air moving in. A few showers still possible west of the divide but that wont be a factor for us in the immediate metro area. High temperatures reaching to around 80 degrees in leesburg and bwim at 4 00 this afternoon and just a few clouds developing from time to time. Well see those breaks in the cloud cover again during the overnight thats going to allow temperatures to dip into the 50s in the outlying suburbs and down to around 60 degrees for most in the beltway. The winds as i mentioned before are going to be strong from time to time this afternoon and even by mid morning, already starting to see some gusts between 15 and 20 Miles Per Hour. This is at 10 00 a. M. On the wind gust tracker and starting to see those gusts up above 20 Miles Per Hour in the afternoon today. Tomorrow the winds really diminish and were seeing winds only between about 510 Miles Per Hour for the most part as we head into thursday morning. So todays forecast High Temperature 85 in downtown d. C. , only 79 in winchester, 84 in fredrick and 80 in leesburg. Forecast lows tonight down into the mid 50s as we get north and west of town, 56 in fredrick and in hagerstown and 57 in culpeper. Next three days are going to be beautiful, green weather alerts highs in the mid 80s today and tomorrow, low 80s on friday with all that sunshine and first alert seven day forecast our next chance for rain is not until sunday afternoon, High Temperatures back into the 90s by sunday as well. That is a look at the first alert seven day forecast. This time again for time saver traffic. And boy is it hopping out there right now. We are taking a first lock at this live picture, this is the sky 9 camera and backed up traffic along northbound 395 this problem is in the hov lanes near duke street an accident there backing things up from the beltway headed in from springfield so yes a very very tough ride there, plan around that one this morning. Now to our graphics were definitely dealing with trouble spots over here on our traffic vdot camera, we have southbound on i295 this is in the district or northbound however where were actually seeing some Construction Zone there and some moving merging traffic as well. Now a lock at our graphics we can see how things are flowing into the district of columbia, we have those problems mainly because of the water main break inbound on new york avenue. Andrea, mike . Thank you, olga. We want to get a check on those gas prices that continue to drive us crazy even though theyre dropping a little bit. Were locking at prices in cumberland, maryland. According to triple as fuel finder the most expensive regular unleaded is going for 3. 69 a gallon at the 7 11 on maryland avenue, but you can get regular unleaded for just 3. 50 a gallon if you go to the d d pit and go oh, hi there bill. Its not just a sedan. Its a subaru. Welcome back. Look at that beautiful sunshine out there starting to burst through the cloud cover im first alert meteorologist erica grow. Those high clouds you see on the screen arent going to bring us any rain. They are the kind of clouds that they are actually called cirrus clouds and they drift through and they bill be out of here by mid morning. Partly to mostly sunny this afternoon with highs near 85 degrees and it is breezy though, with winds out of the northwest at 1020 Miles Per Hour. Mike and andrea . Were learning more details about the death of actor indexed january robin williams. His wife was the last person to see him alive when she went to bed on sunday night. Williams personal assistant found his body the 63 year old on monday. He had hung himself with a belt. He also had minor cuts on his wrist, a pocket knife was found nearby. Her son said this came after suffering a stroke. Bacall became a star after he very first film, it was opposite hum any bogard into have and have not. Audiences fell for her trademark look, that being her chin down eyes up at the camera but bacall admitted it was born out of nervousness. I would always say that i was really nervous. Bacall ended up marying him. The couple had two children before he died of cancer in 1957. Despite some other publicized romances and a brief marriage, she said she never got over losing bogart. She did her later acting on the broadway stage winning two tonies and an honorary oscar plus an out right oscar nomination. 6 28 today will be drying out after tuesdays storms dumped more than half a foot of rain in some parts of maryland. We were not the only ones to get hit hard yesterday. Flooding swamped cars and roads all the way to michigan and boy it was bad there. Don clam john has more on flooding rescue operations. Before sunrise wednesday, the rain already started soaking new york city. From pennsylvania into new england, flash flood watches are posted as an unseasonably strong weather front pushes through the northeast. Tuesday, the same front dropped three inches of rain in an hour in parts of maryland. Joy linegars car was almost swallowed by rising waters. It was very scary sitting there in the car watching thd higher. Not far away in a parking lot at a baltimore airport some passengers returned to find their cars submerged. Tuesday night near raleigh, North Carolina drivers not only braved flash flooding but severe thunderstorms in the region even downed trees and caused power outages, near pittsburgh so much rain fell this week a 60inch storm drain runoff pipe collapsed causing this swallowed a car. In detroit people are still drying out after storms soaked the city and six inches of rain there was so much water some pumping stations in the bankruptcy couldnt even keep up because thieves stole critical copper pipes. On highways more than a thousand cars were abandoned. A soggy situation parts of the northeast are bracing for. Don champion for cbs news. The National Weather service has issued a Flood Warning today for the mid atlantic all the way up to new england. Its 6 30. We want to go to police chief kathy lanier reacting to the shooting of a d. C. Police officer. This is what we have right now, so we have a burgundy Nissan Altimaxe occupied by three or four people and we believe all males and around suitland parkway, that fired some shots and stanton. That vehicle then comes down southern avenue to the intersection of southern avenue and pennsylvania avenue and the people in that vehicle tried to car jack, attempted to car jack an off duty detective. The detective of course tries to move his vehicle out of the way as they attempt to car jack the vehicle and there is kind of a running pursuit so to speak between the detective off duty detectives vehicle and the suspects vehicle. The suspect in that car in that altima opened fire on the detectives car and strikes the detective multiple times. He is shot multiple times and the vehicle struck multiple times and that continues up southern avenue where lose sight of it so this Nissan Altima has new york tags on it. A few minutes later, the car is picked up out in Prince Georges County by Prince Georges County police who follow that vehicle and comes back into the district. At one point we know it comes down by the stadium and then it continues back out to the 5500 block of hunt place and the 5500 block of hunt place at lost two possibly three people exited that vehicle and we were able to with the assistance of Prince Georges County stop and have now detained one person, so what were asking for from the public is this Nissan Altima with new york tags clearly was involved in multiple confrontations. We know there was shots fired possibly at another vehicle down on suitland parkway around stanton, around 2 45 this morning and then they attempt to car jack an off duty detective at the on pennsylvania avenue and they continue to fire and travel up southern avenue and they disappear into Prince Georges County but then make their way back into the district so were having for anyone in the public that may have seen this Nissan Altima at some point overnight hours, Early Morning hours either in Prince Georges County or out here in the district. Any information you have if you could call us, its 202727 9099. We have a detective whose just out of surgery who was shot multiple times in this attempted carjacking and he is stable at this point and we have the Nissan Altima in our possession right now but we dont have all of the people that were in it so anybody who has any information about who may have been in that vehicle, has seen this car, they may have had confrontations with someone else, somewhere else. It seems possible and likely that they probably have had some conversations with somebody else because of the number of incidents that happened just since we encountered them this morning at 2 45 so anybody with information we do have a 10,000 reward. This is an attempted robbery with carjacking so theres a 10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. This happened right at the intersection and did the officer who was shot kind of follow them or were they chasing him . So actually the officer who was shot when they attempted the carjacking, he attempts to get away, tries to pull the vehicle away and they open fire on his car and start ramming the car so theres kind of a bumping confrontation going up southern avenue until they get to boen road where they disengage and leave. The detective from this point does not appear the detective ever had a chance to fire back. They opened fire on his car. His car was struck multiple types and he was struck multiple times. The Police Officer did shoot though . We have no indication the officer ever had a chance. They opened fire on him. He never had a chance to fire back. They tried to car jack him and take his car and in response to that he tried to pull his vehicle away and then they pursued him up the roadway. And as for the officer he wasnt ever going after the car like a pullover for speeding or anything . He was trying to stop the carjacking attempt, so he was sitting at the light. That was police chief kathy lanier talking about an off duty detective who was the subject of an attempted carjacking. His car was shot several times, he was shot several times. Hes listed in stable condition just out of surgery. A burgundy Nissan Altima with new york plates was involved. There was several people in the car, one person in custody. Still looking for two and they found that one person thanks to the help of Prince Georges County police because this pursuit took it from the district into Prince Georges County and back to d. C. So they need your help and there is a 10,000 reward for any help leading to the arrest of these two suspects that are still out on the loose and well keep following this story throughout the day. Weather time now lets look outside. Beautiful sunrise, youre going to feel a little bit of humidity as we head out 74 degrees at northwest washington but changes are coming and they are good ones, erica joins us. Good morning mike and andrea. Yes those changes are already starting to move in. The humidity will drop this morning and by the afternoon it will be a really refreshing change for us. Ive already noticed the breezes picking up a little bit on the weather terrace. It is those breezes that bring us the lower humidity and that pleasant afternoon. 79 degrees by noon, with a partly sunny sky and a few more clouds arrive in the afternoon and that will be just courtesy of that cooler air descending in that will stirrup a little bit of instability you get those puffy clouds developing when that happens. On satellite and radar you can see our departing frontal system and nothing left in its wake except a few clouds and even those are going to go by the wayside pretty soon. Current temperature is 69 in laplatea, still 74 in Downtown Washington and 68 in hagerstown. Coming up in first alert seven day forecast, well track the next frontal system and its going to be awhile before we have rain in the forecast again. Back to you. Well, traffic definitely jamming northbound on 395, sky 9 chopper over the scene northbound 395 at duke. Now the accident there if we can switch to our traffic land camera is actually blocking two of three left lanes and that means that were definitely seeing some major delays as traffic starts to squeeze on by so we can take a look at the traffic shot now thats where you can see all of that traffic is funneling into that very far right lane. Its definitely going to be a slow go. Now to our graphics inbound on the suitland parkway or inbound on new york avenue, were still seeing opportunity for some slowing traffic, mainly because of a water main break near montana avenue and the outbound of the beltway building some volume. Mike, andrea . Thank you, olga. Tomorrow Maryland Governor ordered flags both american and state to be lowered to half staff from sunrise to sunset. This will be to honor Major General harold green. Were taking a look at the lincoln memorial, the center for peace here on michael and son weather cam and it is a really pleasant start to the day, especially when you compare it to everything that we had to deal with as you were heading home from work, maybe you got caught in that very heavy rainfall. At 9 00 a. M. Well be at 73 degrees mostly sunny and that sunshine really sticking with us through noon and then a few clouds bubble up in the afternoon and there just because were going to have that cooler air moving in aloft and the warm air below that creates instability and you get those puffy clouds developing you know what they look like, like popcorn up there in the sky and they look really pretty too. 70 degrees right now in both leesburg and gaithersburg. 70 fredrick as well its 69 in la plata and 74 downtown d. C. And 65 in martinsburg. That cooler dryer air coming in from the northwest and on satellite and radar you q4tcan sew our departing frontal system bringing heavy rain to places like connecticut and massachusetts not here in metro. The breezes from the northwest are strong from time to time today and youll see that here on 9 future cast, as we move toward the noon time hour, those winds will be gusting near 20 Miles Per Hour, so nothing too terribly strong or gusty but you will definitely notice that breeze. The breeze brings in less humid air though and as we head into the overnight hours, the breeze diminishes. Okay so that will allow our temperatures to dip into the 50s and the suburbs tonight a goodnight to open up the windows and let in that fresh air at this, even into friday, for the end of the work week were still looking at completely Clear Conditions out there, lots of sunshine over the next three days. This afternoon a few of those clouds but nothing to contend with as far as any rainfall is concerned. Good news there, 83 degrees for your high in leesburg, 83 culpeper as well, 80 martinsburg, 79 in gaithersburg this afternoon. Overnight well dip into the mid 50s in a lot of spots, 53 in laray, 57 culpeper and in orange as well.
