Back in a few minutes, doppler 9000 and a look at the weekend forecast, whether or not you want to see it. Heres delia. Advocates and National Surveys estimate it costs 50,000 to keep a homeless person alive. That includes shelter, food, health services, even incarceration, but putting that same person in a home costs only 25,000 and that includes Ongoing Services. So ending this crisis makes Financial Sense advocates say and saves us all money. In a threepart series, weve taken a look at the faces of homelessness and the challenges in getting them off the street. Advocates and district leaders say its not just about putting people in homes but offering Ongoing Services to address their illnesses, addictions, Mental Health or simply providing life skills. If you think ending homelessness sounds crazy, it is but its been done at a huge savings for residents of phoenix, arizona. They actually ended veterans homelessness just this past december in 2013, a full year earlier than they said they would. They did it by bringing in not only the normal suspects which are government officials and organizations like miriams kitchen, but also reaching out to the Business Community and figuring out how to we go the last mile so house the individuals. Utah has also reduced its Homeless Population by 78 and it is on track to end all homelessness by next year. And some really exciting goals, here in the district of columbia, 280 veterans have been identified as homeless living on the street. The mayors committed to putting them all in homes by next year and ending all homelessness, 3,000 chronically homeless by 2017. Unfortunately, though, with the wars starting to end, there will be more service men and women coming home, dealing with the same emotional issues and may end up on the streets as well. To have sort after position in place where you can actually move them is going to be very important. Its an ongoing issue. You say ending homelessness but its a cycle. So you get some folks inside shelter, inside homes and theyre living and thriving but like you said, there are always other challenges that crop up. Its a process before you get them into the home, hopefully Mental Health services will be available for the returning vets to keep them from falling into the trap of addiction or whatever could lead them to homelessness. I think people in d. C. And other cities should study whats going on in phoenix, arizona and utah to find out how they bring businesses in. When you talk about a business, they are inundated with Health Care Costs and their normal costs. How much would this cost them in addition to the things theyre already paying for and how do you convince them to buy into it knowing its going to help them in the long run. We had the money all along, 120 million in the the budget the mayor says but no one really had a plan. Now that we have these models across the country and phoenix was successful in doing so, theyre modeling and following their lead. So they are looking at phoenix and utah and the other jurisdictions that have been successful in saying how did they do it and how can we get everyone else on board. The mayor says we dont need any more money so were not going to businesses and churches for money. We need support. Great series, delia. Thank you so much. 2017, thats the number to shoot for.
