The clouds thicken up tonight. I think the temps right now, you see down to 36 here in washington. Baltimore 32. It was 29 hagerstown. 30 for winchester and manassas. And even you dont have to be at freezing to get slick spots. The surface temperature can be a little colder than the air temperature and even Southern Maryland with andrews and pax river at 33 we have to be concerned. The wind chills are not that great so the wind chills are down into the 20degree range up north. 30 in manassas. Feels like 26 at andrews, going to 41. Please, exercise extreme caution over the next few hours. With more on the trouble spots, heres monika and timesaver traffic. A multivehicle accident on the bw parkway southbound. Its near route 2302 inside the belt 202 inside the beltway and reports of icy conditions in that area. The bw parkway i believe right now only one lane is getting by. It was shut down for some time. There was an accident on the inbound side of route 50 closer to route 10. There is also a vehicle fire. I believe its been put out on the inner loop of the beltway south side of town at the wilson bridge in the local lanes and thats caused delays from at least 295. If you take public transportation, youll want to know that vre is on an s schedule today. Marc on an s schedule with a twohour delay. Prince georges county, the bus, is on a limited service all day today as well. Lets take a live look outside. Heres what it looks like if youre planning to head on the beltway at branch avenue. The outer loop, theres been this longstanding crash with the flashing lights. Luckily the volumes are light but again we are hearing about those icy patches. For example, on the northbound side of i95 between route 216 and 175, at some point only going 20 miles an hour according to our photo journalist greg geist who said the two le lanes are icy and slushy and impassable. Well take one more last look in virginia on the northbound side of i95. Heres the volume. You want to be really careful, especially on the bridges, ramps and overpasses this morning. Back to you guys. Thanks a lot, monika. 6 04 just about. Here in the district the main roads pretty much cleared. For many d. C. Residents it is the side streets that are still a huge concern, a big obstacle. Delia goncalves is live with a look at some unplowed side roads in northwest. Good morning, delia. Reporter good morning. We started out the morning at the 2600 hundred block of wisconsin avenue and the side street there, davis street was a horrible mess with snow packed in. Couldnt even really see a track left by a plow at all, just by nearby cars. However here, upper 16th street, this is aspen street off 16th. Were looking pretty good. Since weve been here in the last hour, we have seen a plow go by with its shovel down and salting as well. So we can assure you that city crews are out and they are plowing and salting as well. Still some work to do on some of the main roads as well, even though they are looking good and passible. We saw that andrea, you were driving here on 16 rght street at the 16th street at 1 45. Lots of improvement since you commuted early this morning. So certainly a lot of work still being done to clear the streets here in d. C. We can tell you dpw and ddot working together. Ddot is actually taking care of the north side of the city. Dpw crews the south side of the city. Together they have 300 crews and will continue to clear city streets. Back to you in the studio. Good news. The snow, it stopped falling but today the cleanup is definitely under way. It may take longer than just today. Of course things are Getting Better as delia just showed us. There are some spots that are still a little rough. Nikki burdine is live in Silver Spring with a look at how things are going there. You said the side roads not too far from you are in pretty rough shape. Reporter the side roads are a big mess. I want you to look behind me. Snowplows are out here right now clearing these sidewalks and making these roads a little bit wider. This is something theyll be doing all morning long and have been doing since 4 00. Cars are having to yield to them and thats what you should do if you see a snowplow working. Stay to the job. Let them do their job so they can clear the road for us to get to where we need to be. I want you to look down here of the i dont know if you remember in the past hour we were out here. This was spread out probably a couple more feet. They came in a few minutes ago and pushed it back in. Its a lot higher. This crunchy, yucky, dirty snow, not the fun stuff we can throw snowballs with anymore. They pushed this to the side making it easier for drivers but the big problem is theres no sidewalk. I was standing here about 20 minutes ago and this was the sidewalk. Its nowhere to be found. If youre a pedestrian trying to get where you need to be this morning, youre going to have a big problem. A quick check of some of the side roads. We shot some video. Take a look at that real quick. Those side roads, thats where youre going to see the problems this morning. Main roads, Georgia Avenue, colesville road, 16th street, those are all fine but these side roads are where the problems are so allow yourself extra time to get to your cars this morning. Again, be mindful of the sidewalks. They are not clear so you might see some pedestrians on the main roads this morning. We will keep you updated here in Silver Spring at the intersection of georgetown and colesville. Back to you guys. All right, thank you, nikki. A lot of slick areas. Were hearing interest some accidents. Well check in with monika in a moment. I urge you to use extreme caution for the next two to three hours. Once we get to midmorning conditions should be a lot better. It doesnt look too bad at all this afternoon after the early slick spots. By the way, were looking at the near full moon. Its going toking full tonight into the overnight but were going to have clouds around so we wont be seeing. Highs upper 30s to low 40s. The clouds tonight will drop a little snow across parts of the area. Ill be back with your full sevenday forecast in a few minutes. There was a vehicle on fire on the inner loop of the beltway at the wilson bridge in the local lines. Right now one lane remains blocked. Delays finally dissipating. The big story right now is the bw parkway southbound which is closed between the beltway and route 50 all because of icy conditions and a multivehicle accident. I will keep you posted on that situation. Back to you guys. Some communities as weve been saying north and west got more than a foot. Some places almost two feet of snow. What the plows have done and are still doing their job, overnight freezing has left behind several slick spots. Hank silverberg is driving around sterling, virginia. He showed us how you can easily spin out on these very slick roads. What do you have for us now, hank . Reporter my colleagues have been telling but how slick it is on some of the side roads and neighborhoods. The other place youll find has disarpds is in parking hazards is in parking lots. This is an example here in federalling. Its pretty icy here. Urge the sun comes up and does some work, its going to remain icy. Even at slow speeds it can be very, very treacherous. So walking or driving like we are right now, you can see how rough it is as the camera shakes. You need to be careful going. Were going to demonstrate that again for you at the bottom of the hour. Even at slow speeds how you can spin out really easily. If you do have to go out for that cup of coffee this morning or youre a worker and you have to get to your work before the malls open, please be careful in the parking lots. Be aware that a lot of the wet spots have frozen over. Reporting live in sterling, hank silverberg, wusa9. When youre talking about that freezing line, its just a matter of where you are. Here in d. C. Were above freezing. There are plenty of other where flash freezing is a danger. Not so much a line as it is areas. The winds play a factor. Elevation plays a factor. So you can have more pockets of freezing. Even the surface temperature can be different than the air temperature. So you can get down to 33, 34, 2k3w5 34 and 35 and still have breezing ground. Please use extra caution. I got to show you a beautiful picture were looking at here on our michael son weather camera. We have the near full moon and the full moon is tonight. Its looking a little orangey. Its going to lower on the horizon. Its going through a little more of the atmosphere and that filters the color a little more. I have to look that up. Its usually venus or jupiter. 43 degrees by 3 00 with a high of about 41 or so. So once we get to about 9 00, 10 00, the icing concerns will start to drop off pretty quickly as far as the roads. You see today well get some more melting in. Temperatures regionally, theyre cold but theyre not terribly cold but theyre cold enough. The 28 in williamsport, 25 in oakland, 32 in cleveland. The 32 in new york. Theyre cold enough for the slick spots this morning. When you look close in, now were down to 31 in damascus. Even the 33 in bowie. Thats cold enough to get slick spots on the surfaces. Alexandria is below freezing. Reston 29 along with dulles right now. Bull run 25. Dumfries 29. That can abproblem here for the next few can be a problem here for the next few howrps. One more look a the moon getting few hours. One more look at the upon getting orangeier. 36. South wind at 8 and barometer rising 29. 54. We had the storm in two parts. The second part yesterday also had a little bit of a kick to it. Dropped anywhere from an inch to even four, five down across parts to our south and southeast and there it goes. Now, behind it, a lesser system but still this one weve got to watch. Southern iowa coming down at a pretty good clip right now. That clipper, its called a clipper because they move quickly. It will be here late tonight and first part of the day on saturday dropping a little bit of snow. Today no problems. He we are at 6 00 p. M. Generally clear. Then tonight the clouds increase. By midnight out into the mountains we could be seeing a little bit of snow. Maybe a little rainsleet mix just ahead of it. Southern areas can see a couple of showers out of this. Well see a decent amount of snow in the mountains. If youre going skiing anywhere from snowshoe, wisp, liberty, these guys are going to get agent bit of snow. Even six inches out there. For us this comes across with the snow showers, especially north of town. Thats where we could see an inch to three. I think a dusting to maybe an inch in the immediate metro with lingering snow showers near and east of the bay by 5 00 with some sun building in from the west in the afternoon. So not a big event but something that may affect your travel here saturday morning. Right now were going to keep saturday green but may need to elevate it to a yellow alert. This afternoon 41. This morning, though, really concerned for these icy patches. Well see the early slick spots and the winds have been breezy this morning. Theyll came down. Tonight 31 with the snow showers late into the first part of the day on saturday. Sunshine developing west to east in the afternoon, 37. Sunday is going to be cold and dry. Then after that, a warming trend starts. Still a little chilly monday, 42. By tuesday, look at that, 54. There will be a chance of a shower tuesday, wednesday and thursday but look at those temperatures. Mid50s on wednesday. Upper 50s if not 60ish on thursday. Aim hoping we dont melt all the snow too quickly because then flooding concerns will have to be raised. Right now if we can do this without too much rain, well be okay. Monika samtani, all sorts of slick issues on the roads still even though weve been above freezing most of the night. Look at this. A good example of what youre talking about, howard. This is the bw parkway southbound inside the beltway at route 202. Were now one lane getting by. Multiple vehicles involved in this crash. Icy conditions the reason for the crash. I know salt trucks were called out to the scene as well. Very, very slow and heavy before the beltway on the bw parkway. Southbound trying to get past this incident. Again multiple vehicles were involved in this one. And then if you choose to use route 50, it was in trouble because of an accident at route 410 earlier this morning. So, yes, we have these problems. Icy conditions, especially on the bridges, ramps and overpasses. Be careful. As you can see major thoroughfares still in some trouble. Lets go over to our traffic feature on our ipad app. This is a great morning to use this because if you want your street level information in real time, you can zoom into it. Im going to give you one example right here on i95 where our greg geist, our photo journalist has been calling me for the last hour telling me about conditions on the northbound side with icy and rough patches on the left side of the roadway. He was only going 20 miles an hour between route 216 and 175 on the northbound side and then closer into bwi airport, very slow and heavy with icy conditions as well. Navigating the roads around there. So if you are planning to use the traffic feature, here is our traffic key to guide you through this. This shows the traffic flow and the incidents indicated by these icons. Lets take a live look outside and show what you it looks like on the beltway, inner loop side. Very slow and heavy from 295. The salt trucks are out there with a vehicle fire on the inleer at wilson bridge. Only one lane blocked right now and very slow again on the inner loop through oxon hill trying to get to the wilson bridge. Back to you guys. Thank you, monika. Some communities in frederick county, maryland and loudoun county, maryland each received close to two feet of snow. Absolutely. While the plows have done a tremendous job, overnight freezing has left behind pockets of slick spots around the road area. Hank silverberg is live along route 7 in sterling, virginia, driving there to see just how slick it is. Good morning, hank. Reporter good morning. Weve come here to a parking lot in one ever the Shopping Centers to demonstrate how slippery it can be on some of the side roads and some of the parking lots. Were doing a little demonstration for you. Our kevin king, our photographer is driving. Were going to go down a small hill and then hes going to basic. Well see what happens going to brake. Well see what happens. Thats much better than it was an hour ago when we did a slid about 15, 20 feet. Well now make a couple of turns. Were still spinning around here. This is not good. You dont want to do this in traffic. This is what can happen on just a little bit of ice. The next few hours until the sun comes up, its going to be really slippery. Thats what youre liable to run into at intersections, parking lots and certain wet spots across the region. Be very careful out there. Keep your speeds down. Watch out for the other cars. If you do that in traffic, youre going to have a real problem. Hank silverberg, wusa9. Thanks a lot, hank. With improving road conditions, several local governments are beginning to lift their snow emergency plans. While things are Getting Better, there are still spots that remain impassable. Nikki burdine is live at Georgia Avenue and seminary in Silver Spring. Main roads not so much a problem but its off to the side and the sidewalks, right, nick kaye . Reporter good morning. Yes are nikki. Reporter good morning. Yes, we are in Silver Spring. The main roads as you can see are perfect. No problems at all right here. I want to take you this way. The sidewalks right here, this looks fine. This is easy to walk on. No problems here. But this is what you see when you get close. Theres nowhere for me to go from here on out. The sidewalk is completely gone. Snowplows have been coming through pushing the snow to the side to make the roads a little wider but that causes big problems for pedestrians. You cant see from where were standing but a pedestrian walked through waiting for the bus. But to get to that bus stop, he had to walk on the main road on Georgia Avenue. Very dangerous, especially because it is still dark outside and people do tend to fly on down through here. Another problem we see here in Silver Spring, i want you to take a look at this video our photographer shot this morning. Our truck couldnt get down on these side roads off of colesville and off of Georgia Avenue. He had to walk down through there. These are the kind of issues that people are going to see this morning when they get up to go to work so be mindful of that. Give yourself extra time when you go out to your car. Drive extra slow. But the good news is when you do get out on to these main roads like Georgia Avenue, you should be fine for the most part. Another warning i want to tell you about, you see the parking lot across the street, exxon, that parking lot is a mess. That seems to be the case for other businesses around here. Parking lots, especially gas stations are very slick, very hard to get in and out. Since weve been standing out here, ive seen at least one bus and two other trucks get stuck pulling in there. That seems to be the case around here. The snowplows coming through here salting and again widening those roads, moving them on to the sidewalks several times as weve been out here. Be mindful of that. Stay out of the way so they can do their job. Well be out here in Silver Spring monitoring these neighborhoods and showing you what is good and what you need to know for yo morning commute. Were live in Silver Spring, back to you in the studio. Thank you. Here in the district the main roads really look quite good this morning. It sounds the same for all of the jurisdictions. Main streets good. But youve got to get there and thats the biggest problem because the side streets are still a huge concern. Delia goncalves is live with a look at some unplowed side streets in northwest d. C. Good morning, delia. Reporter good morning. Yeah, as you mentioned main streets looking really good down to the pavement at 16th street off aspen. Since weve been here for about an four half or so, we have fortunately seen plows go through this side street on aspen. This is a twolane road thats really just narrowed down to one lane. Because take came look. If you can pan down, paul. All of this snow here, we have about 6 inches wide from curb to the middle of the street essentially where this snow has drifted. You have these piles of snow just kind of just piled up on the side. Certainly drivers have to be aware. They now have to take really wide turns and take turns alternating going into the street because your lanes have narrowed significantly. But weve traveled throughout the city and we started this morning over on wisconsin avenue taking a look. Side streets there completely snowplowed. It snow covered. It didnt look like a plow went through there at all. But again just like nikki was showing you, sidewalks continue to be a problem. Take a look at this one. Not plowed at all. This home looks to be abandoned. We know that sidewalks are the responsibility ever the homeowner so theres no telling of the homeowner. Theres no telling when or if this particular portion of the sidewalk will be cleared. However, according to the mayor, homeowners have 24 hours after the snowfall to clear their sidewalks because we saw a lot of hazardous situations yesterday with folks walking in the streepts because of this situation. So certainly lots of the streets because of the situation. So certainly lots of homeowners need to get out in the coming days if they havent already to clear their walks. Its awfully difficult to walk in these conditions as well. Theres a plow truck going through, one more pass on 16th street. Theyre doing a good job. 300 crews out on the streets clearing the roads. Still some work to do. As i was traveling through southeast washington this morning, lots of side streets still need attention so were going to show you some of those streets. Tune in at noon and well see what the side streets are looking like throughout the city. Back to you. Delia is right. It made it difficult for postal workers to get through and deliver mail yesterday because the side streets were so, so bad. Hopefully today will be different. Thanks, delia. Sunday looks dry, sunny and cold. One of the things you were talking about heading into the storm is the possibility of thunder snow. We got reports from laurel, a lot of reports down south, king george, fredricksburg, lots of Southern Maryland had the thunder and lightning and was really light. Summertime when it gets hot, you get convection. Thats the trigger. We just had the upper level energy giving us so much left that you had a little convection in that. That means the tall clouds there. Thats enough to t a little thunderstorm action going. Just a sign of how intense. We had one of those several years ago. How intense that snow was yesterday afternoon and evening with the second piece of the storm. Even a little hail was reported. Freezing level wasnt that high. That was when it was raining over in annapolis during the mid afternoon. Lets show you whats happening outside right now because it is really a very, very pretty morning out there. Been enjoying the sky shot. Post add few pictures of the horizon and the capitol on my twitter account and facebook. Thanks to everybody who during the storm tweeted me, mess alleged me on facebook. Appreciate all the information that you guys provided to us. Temperatures will climb toward the low 40s this afternoon. The problem is this morning. 32 at 9 00. We still have temperatures that are below freezing and road surface temperatures below freezing. Anything that is not treated or has slush on it, dangerous for the next few hours but it will be much better. You notice by midmorning to afternoon, mid to upper 30s here for the second half of the morning. Right now, though, some of these temperatures are above freezing. The air temperatures are taking two meters off the ground 6, 7 feet. The surface below that could still even be colder. 27 in manassas. Leesburg 32. La plata 30. Got plenty of temperatures below freezing. Weve got slush on the roads. We had water that has been freezing in spots that are untreated. Please take it easy. Another shot of this gorgeous sky. Just the high clouds there. Thats the open runway at Reagan National at the bottom. The potomac in the middle. Mother natures best work in most of the picture. 36 degrees right now. Officially mostly cloudy at Reagan National with a windchill of 30. And the winds are coming down a bit. Currently south at 8 but a lot of us are seeing a wind out of the west and northwest. Its going to turn southwesterly as storm number two or the second part of storm number one leaves. Now were watching this clipper coming out of iowa to northern missouri, western illinois. Had some snow. Has a little mix in the northern part of missouri and raining on the south side. Thats what were looking at for late tonight and the first part of the day on saturday. Futurecast going to be nice and quiet today. So no worries today except for the slick spots this morning. Thats why weve got the yellow alert. Not that we have any significant weather but still very, very rough in spots if you go out in the next few hours. Then tonight into tomorrow, well see that clipper move in with some snow from the ohio valley in toward West Virginia by midnight. Overnight into tomorrow morning, well see the snow start to move toward us. The mountains are going to get it worse than we will here in the metro. Go a lilerain potentially on the south side of the system with snow north. That means a dusting to perhaps an inch or two. Loflly three near the Mason Dixon Line by the time it pulls away by mid afternoon with sun building in west to east. There may be lingering snow showers around the bay by 5 00 p. M. The forecast calls for a decent day once we get out of the early slick spot concerns. 41. 31 tonight. Overnight clouds with some snow, snow showers into tomorrow morning. A couple of raindrops south. Tomorrow not bad, 37. We may have to go yellow alert. Well talk about that a little later, me, topper and erica. 35. Cold and dry on sunday. Then next week its warmer. Starts with the low 40s on monday. Then 50s if not close to 60 by thursday with a chance for just a couple of showers. Heres monika samtani, timesaver traffic. Still treacherous in many areas. Yes, especially the bw parkway where things are ever changing. We had a put youty vehicle accident on the we had a multivehicle accident on the southbound side. On the northbound side another multiple vehicle accident. A car slid off the road into the ditch there. So now whats happening here, a live look from our sky 9, you can get on to the outer loop southbound bw parkway on to the outer loop but not on to the inner loop and the lanes are blocked here while they go ahead and treat the bw parkway inside the beltway with a lot of ice and again the accidents as well. So again maybe just go ahead and use route 50 as your alternate route. Thats going to take a hit but at least right now as far as i know, the lanes are open. Lets go over to our traffic feature.
