2013 when 12 of their colleagues were killed. He is live with some of their reactions today at the navy yard. Reporter this will come as no surprise, but the people we talked to today were not complaining that their workday was disrupted by this rumor report of a terrorist attack. They were actually grateful it was unfounded. Navy yard employees were pouring off the grounds in droves this afternoon. You were on lockdown in there, right . Yeah, we were. Reporter how did you feel about it . A little too reminiscent of two years ago, but were okay. Reporter after the all clear sign was given and no hint of a gunman or shot fired, employees had the choice of remaining on the job or going home. The same situation as two years ago, so i think brought up some memories that arent very good for people. Reporter would you go back into work at the navy yard . Today . Reporter yes. No. Reporter back in 2013 some navy yard employees after losing 12 colleagues chose to be reassigned. Others chose to retire rather than return to work. I just lock my door, tell my employees to get in a closed room. Reporter thats joyce. Most of the navy yard workers and contractors were only giving first names today. How long were you on lockdown . I didnt even check the time. Listen, i was in 9 11, so im used to. This. Reporter for others todays incident which amounted to only a drill in the end will weigh level for quite some time to come of the what are your thoughts . Fear. You always to come. What are your thoughts . Fear. You always have to be watching and be aware of whats going on around you. Reporter thoughts on the city workers, the federal workers who have to be on guard for this sort of thing, here we go again . No. I think its important that employees anywhere, whether theyre in any of our buildings, if they have any concern, they should let officials know and their concerns will be taken seriously. Reporter there you have it. The mayor and others are not saying to federal workers hold up on those calls. No. Do what youre trained to do. You see, something you hear, something youre supposed to act in this way. They said again repeatedly today. Of all the federal workers we talked to today, most went home. Most say theyll come back tomorrow or after the 4th of july holiday. You could certainly understand why. Thank you. While today asana yard incident was a false alarm, it did todays navy yard incident was a false alarm it, did give the personnel a unique opportunity to test out their training. Peggy fox is live near the navy yard to tell us how differently todays response went compared to the one two years ago. Reporter thats right. When the gunman roamed the halls of building 197 shooting people, local police could not get inside because military personnel had locked the gate. That was protocol. Today that protocol is out the window and the response demonstrated a new level of cooperation. Just as im coming out of there, here come all my mcis friends from the second deck fully loaded with arms and everything just like last time. Reporter certainly there was a sick feeling of deja vu for the employees at the navy yard, but this time things were different. We did really well. Leadership did well. Police response was great. It was all good. Reporter employees here have trained for what people feared was happening this morning when someone thought they heard gunshots. They had us on lockdown and we basically stayed in our building the whole time. Reporter you sheltered in place. Well, down the hall, yes. Reporter did you go into an office . Yes. Reporter and the door was closed . We locked the door. Reporter then what happened . We just waited. Reporter several employees said when they were sheltering in an office room and a guard came to clear the room, he knocked, but before opening the door he told everyo their hands up and walk out keeping their hands in the air. Luckily it was a false alarm and everybody is safe. Reporter after the massacre two years ago a Police Report found major problems in the emergency response. First they had trouble getting through locked gates and then police were unable to monitor aaron alexis movements on surveillance videos because of a locked door. So officers were immediately able to access the gates and get in. We were having Radio Communications both into my command center and in the field. Reporter metropolitan police chief cathy lanier says extensive training paid off. Employees we talked to agree. During the rampage two years ago local police had difficulty communicating with their counter parts inside the navy yard. Well, since then theyve developed new procedures that theyve put into practice today. Lesli, derek . Peggy fox, thank you. After those 2013 shootings, of course, the Police Department conducted a review and its response and they made 77 recommendations which could have improved the response that day. As weve seen today, they put a lot of that stuff in practice. Today was a very different day. Many people turned to social media as the incident at the navy yard developed. Our web producer will show us how the navy used twitter and what people are saying right now. One of the best things about twitter is its an easy way for officials to get information out very quickly to ltmuiple people. At 7 59 a. M. The navy tweeted navy yard on lockdown. Then we started to see pictures like this 1 from Sandra Webster of the scene near the navy yard and now heres the tweet when the Navy Confirmed no sign of a shooting. So you could really follow along on twitter as this story developed. Obviously a lot of folks were following along, but how did the regular folks react about this situation . Once the all clear was given people started to tweet feelings of relief d anksthan to Law Enforcement for that quick response. Wendy said thankful to god my girl is safe. She saheid r htdauger was on lockdown this morning. Heres another tweet from ian who said some are critical of the person reporting a possible Navy Yard Shooting but better safe than. So thanks for the First Responders and were unanimous sorry. Thanks for the First Responders. Were definitely seeing a lot of that. You can keep up with the latest details by following us wusa9. Mansion murders, the sole person in custody in the murders of the savopoulos family and their housekeeper fired his lawyer again. Bruce leshan was in the courtroom for this very short hearing and joins us live from d. C. Superior court after talking to daron wints attorney. So what happened . Reporter the new attorneys for daron wint are not talking, but it was hard to get his now fired former attorney to stop. Im disappointed because were very good at when we do. Reporter Shawn Hanover lasted all of 2 1 2 weeks. Daron wint charged in the stabbing, beating and burning murders of savvas and amy savopoulos, their 10yearold philip and housekeeper Vera Figueroa fired his public defenders last month and hired hanover. Now he has fired hanover and gone back to his public defenders. Was it a disagreement over Defense Strategy . I cant describe exactly what it was because that would compromise our client relationship, which is very important to me. However, i can say we had a difference of opinion. Reporter the hearing lasted a few minutes, so we got no additional sense of legal strategies, but hanover hinted he would have built on police statements that it is unlikely wint could have held the family and extorted 40,000 from the wealthy executive alone. We believe he was set up. Reporter set up by somebody else who was involved in these murders . Interesting presumption. We should investigate that, too. Well, i cant anymore, but i would say thats an interesting point. Reporter wint once worked as a weld are for savvas savopoulos. He was heart broken like everybody else at their deaths and i can assure you that he never intended or wanted anybody, them or anyone else, to be harmed. Reporter now that answer from the lawyer had one reporter asking if perhaps wint had been part of some kind of plot that had gone wrong. The lawyer said that all he was really trying to say is wint simply didnt want to hurt anyone ever. Live at d. C. Superior court, bruce leshan, wusa9. Looks like it could be around a few more days. Im going to explain why the forecast is not so cut and dry july 4th. If were lucky it, wont be bad. If were not lucky, maybe july 5th would be better to do the fireworks. Oh, no it could go either way. Look how murky it is, in july in the 70s, 77 with clouds, dry in much of the area. The heavier stuff is near the reedville area. This unsettled pattern will be around a few more days, temperatures staying below average. Thats okay for july. Showers and storms on and off between now and sunday morning perhaps the way its going and the fireworks forecast is still up in the air, so to speak. Showers and storms really hitting hard in many other areas of the country, one severe thunderstorm watch box in the carolinas, another in parts of oklahoma and arkansas. Weve got this front sort of weaving its way from areas in kentucky and oklahoma back through our neck of the woods. With areas of low pressure riding that front timing exactly where this front is, the computer models dont do a good job. It only takes 50 miles being off to be the difference of having clouds and dry weather and storm and heavy rain. Some areas between now and sunday could see 3 to 4 inches of rain across parts of western virginia and virginia. That looks south and west of us, but if that moves 50, 80 miles, weve got more problems towards the 4th. Tomorrow clouds, start the day dry. We could be yellow alerts tomorrow and saturday if things really get wet. Well develop showers for the afternoon here, better chance into west virginia, down well to our south.
