Thats after two fires and 14 months at long font plaza last year. And due to arcing insulators. Wusa 9 mola lenghi explains exactly what arcing insulators are. And these cables, mola, what did they do . Thats right. They spent the day, inspecting jumper cables. They have been inspected before, some even replaced. But after mondays fire, metro admits, he had concerns about those previous inspections. Metro runs on electricity. It takes thousands of power supply capables to move cables to move that electricity. These supply cables connect to what are called jumper cables. There are about 600 of those in the tunnel throughout the system. They also connect to the third rail. So theyre basi man. An extension chord. Delivering to the power supply to the third rail. And once electrified. It powers the third train. Jumper and supply cables are spliced together by a booth. A fiberglass cover that protects the Meeting Point of the two cables. If that is not sealed, then that Meeting Point is not properly protected. And the electricity can escape. That is known as arcing. And if that happens, the electricity that escaped is now exposed. And many potential substances that, well, dont get along with electricity. Like water, metals or the debris that trains shed, from rust particles to brake dust. And these substances can also find their way into the booth. This can result in smoke, fire, or electrical meltdown. Which is what happened in the deadly lafont plaza last year. And its believed to have caused the fire at Mcpherson Square monday. Metro confirms cable that caught fire at mcpherson had not only had inspection, but it passed inspection. There was concern that other potential defective cables could have been out there.
