Its a big opportunity. I think the individuals that made the money off of the gold rush were the people that sold the picks and shovels rather than those that used the picks and shovels. With all of these other industries i mentioned, they can be involved in those right now. Reporter ray had been evicted, along with his wife renee and seeing eye dog. How dare you treat somebody like that. Thats the worst thing that you can do. Reporter after 42 years of living here, the manager of the coop was tossing the family out for what they say was nonpayment of some 600 in overdue fees. Back there over my shoulder is where ray, renee and their dog used to live. If you believe the numbers here that were developed by the countys own auditor, its an eviction that never should have happened and there have been others. Others. It turns out an auditor assigned to investigate the dispute turned up evidence that ray and other residents had actually been overbilled for water and sewer fees in 2012 and 2013. Based on the evidence that they brought forth and was talking about, they owed no money. Reporter the amount overpaid according to the auditor, more than 285,000. This figure represents the fact what we have been saying for years, that the members had been overbilled, that members had lost their homes. Reporter ray and his wife and dog, neighbors, county politicians and others all gathered today to discuss the overpayment discovered by the auditor. We miss our home. We miss this community. My understanding, they have like 25 people on the chopping block to be evicted, to be put out of here. Something has to be done. We want the county to look further into the situation and make sure that these the number, the 285,000 number is accounted for. To be made homeless is the most egregious thing that can happen when youre talking about a few hundred dollars. Now its unclear what the government does from this point on. Im told by the county spokesperson they just got this information about the apparent overbilling a few days ago. Theyre studying this right now. There could be additional action. Bernard cook, the attorney for the coop declined to do an interview. By telephone he tells me there has been no double billing at the coop.
