Right now former Virginia Governor Bob Mcdonnell is ready to file an appeal after he was sentenced to two years behind bars for federal corruption charges. Peggy fox has been covering this trial since day one and joins us live from richmond with the latest. Reporter Bob Mcdonnell as you not faced a minimum 10 years in prison or more, but today judge James Spencer first reduced those guidelines from a minimum of 10 to 6 1 2. Then he used his judiciary discretion after listening to the sentiments of hundreds of people considering the defendant and the crime, he gave Bob Mcdonnell only two years behind bars. Thank you. Im a fallen human being. Ive made mistakes in my life. Reporter after receiving a twoyear sentence, much lower than it could have been, Bob Mcdonnell thanked judge James Spencer for his mercy but said he disagreed with the verdict. Deeply sorry, but i would also say to the great people of virginia that i have never ever betrayed my sacred oath of office in my way while i served as the governor of this great commonwealth. Reporter it was clear judge spencer was moved by the 450 letters written in support of of mcdonnell and pleading for leniency. The prosecution argued for a sentence of 6 1 2 years. I think this is an important day for virginia and for the citizens. It is important for the public to have confidence that when someone receives payments, when someone receives gifts in exchange for public actions, that those are bribes and it will be pursued. Reporter mcdonnells entire family was present including his wife, five children and all three sisters. I think we respected the rule of law and the judicial system and i appreciated the great deviation from the guidelines. Certainly we came in today thinking that we could face a whole lot worse, but through prayer and support and just believing that justice does prevail ultimately we were very happy. Reporter among todays 11 witnesses was former governor Douglas Wilder who drew applause from the packed courtroom when he pointed out that jonnie williams, the man who gave the bribes, walked away clean with total immunity. I thought governor wilder was extraordinary. He is one of the great heroes in virginia history. He came in today and he was literally brilliant. He was probably one of the best witnesses i have ever seen. Reporter the judge ordered Bob Mcdonnell to report to prison next month, but his attorneys have asked for him to be out on bond until his appeal. Mcdonnell and his attorney maintain his innocence. They are hoping all 11 convictions are thrown out on appeal and that he never serves any prison time. Coming up at 6 00 well look at what went into the judges decision. Reporter you got it, lesli, but look at the traffic map right now and it is green in about every single direction. This morning it was a little bit like that paul simon song. The nearer you got to your destination, the more youre slip sliding away. On connecticut avenue just up from beach drive a powerful snap in the snow, wires down briefly closed all four lanes of connecticut avenue, this major commuter route, also knocked out power to the signals down along beach drive, another big mess. The snow was real slippery, real slippery. I was slipping coming up this road just to pull into the gas station. Reporter here . Yeah. I had to put it in first gear. Cars are spinning out in front of me. I called my boss and said im going to sit it out. Reporter then up on viers mill a minivan spun out. All these cars behind it spun out, too simply too slippery, completely shutting down the road. Its crazy, aint it . Its not like its a couple feet and its taken 10 times as long as it usually does. Its crazy. Reporter back up on connecticut avenue check this out. A Montgomery County Police Officer actually pushing cars to get them out of the way of the traffic. The hill here was simply too slippery for twowheel drive vehicles to get up. Southbound was closed down for a time. It has been a heck of a mess, but hey, the mail has got to get through. Connecticut avenue right now down to bare pavement, a little bit wet, but as is usually the case, the side streets a little slick still covered with snow. In the deep freeze tonight this stuff could really present a problem in the morning. Lesli, jan, back to you guys. Thank you, bruce. She climbed trees rolling around in it. She climbed trees and rolled down a hill and later hopped on her mom mei xiang. She is loving it. First alert meteorologist erica grow joins us now. It looks like we were just a little off with todays forecast. So what happened . Explain to people. Mainly its the snowfall ratio that causes such big problems for us because the timing was exactly right between 4 and 5 a. M. It was with us the entire morning commute. We said there would be some bands of heavier snow intermittent with the snow showers and that all played out. So what happened . Take a look at our map with the snowfall ratios on it. Reagan National Pick up 2. 4 inches of snow, but that was only. 2 inches of liquid. Lulls picked up 4. 2 inches of snow dulles picked up 4. 2 inches of snow, but that was only about 1 4inch of liquid. The snowfall ratio was about 15of rain would make 15 inches of snow in this scenario or on the low end only. 1inch of liquid, only that much, makes 1. 5 inches of snow. So were trying to nail down for you to within the hundredth of inches of liquid equivalent how much youll get, really hard to do. At Reagan National airport its 31 degrees, dew point 19, light winds out of the northwest at 3 Miles Per Hour. Unfortunately the winds will increase dramatically and we are going to see temperatures plummet overnight tonight. So refreezing on some roads not treated overnight tonight. Very windy tomorrow. Thats going to make it feel very cold. The air temperature, yes, that is going to be cold, too but when you factor in the winds, thats going to make tomorrow downright brutal and those winds are going to be so strong we could see lake effect snow showers, thats right, down from lake erie and lake ontario. On thursday less windy, but even colder. Here we are with satellite and radar. We are done with that clipper system. Another one approaching, this will probably miss us to the north, but we could see a few flurries friday from that system. Here we are with 9 futurecast keeping it dry, but as we head into wednesday morning, those winds really pick up and become northerly as the day goes on and notice a few little spots of blue here. Some spotty snow showers are possible from the lake effect. So dont be surprised if you see a couple flurries or snow showers, especially tomorrow afternoon. The feels like forecast is what i want you to focus on here. Sending the kids out to the bus stop tomorrow morning its going to feel like 5 in hagerstown, 9 in gaithersburg, 8 in martinsburg, 14 in manassas. In the afternoon even worse. Its going to feel like only one in hagerstown and winchester, 9 in Downtown Washington and annapolis and 7 in la plata. The wind chill gets even worse than that thursday morning feeling like its in the negative Single Digits. Thats because its going to be so incredibly cold out there early thursday morning. Overnight tonight just partly to mostly cloudy, 20 to 26 degrees. As i mentioned before, watch for any refreezing, especially on those roadways that are not well treated. Wednesday morning temperatures in the 20s, a few flurries possible and it will turn windy, northwest winds 15 to 25 Miles Per Hour getting Even Stronger in the afternoon. That wind out of the north, northwest at 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour, gusting to near 40 Miles Per Hour. Your High Temperature 25 to 30 degrees. So well see those temperatures continuing to drop as we head into thursday, a high of only 26, but without that wind in the afternoon it will feel a little bit better and then slow here in the first alert sevenday forecast. We are back into the 40s by sunday and well keep it dry until monday. Thats when we have the potential for a few rain and snow showers. Other parts of the country are digging out after todays snow, too. Heavy snow in iowa caused a 20 car pileup on interstate 80. One car just sort of slipped and just went to the side. One hit the other and it just game a domino effect. Then in chicago this semi plowed into its own lane next to the expressway. Areas near the great lakes may see up to 15 inches of snow. You know how much snow we got today really took a lot of people by surprise. It happened when we expected it to happen, but we got a little bit more than expected. School districts now are dealing with the harsh reality. The parents are upset, but some schools should have been closed and they were not closed. Our russ ptacek has been following this story all day. It seems like everybody had strong opinions and this became one of the most popular topics in the world on twitter. Online today our Howard Bernstein wasnt the only one steaming on twitters anger over Fairfax Countys decision to stay open as it grew and grew in popularity. As you tweeted School Bus Accidents and tweeted and retweeted more along with a stuck bus and then another, there was one constant on each tweet, the closefcps and criticism Fairfax County Public Schools twitter page remained silent. Since Fairfax County did not minney tweeted the schools website policy that closefcps was not only the most popular hashtag nationwide, it rows to one of the most popular hashtags in the world. Listen to this post from wusa9 meterologist Howard Bernstein. This one was a no brainer. He got some criticism pointing out area meteorologists including howard underestimated the total snowfall. Are you kidding me . We told you there was going to be snow and start at 5 00, 6 00 and maybe till 11 00 or 12 00. Howards post got nearly 720 likes, nearly 500 comments and almost 6,000 shares. You put a lot of kids and your faculty and your administrative and bus drivers in jeopardy today by failing miserably on the call not to close schools. Now howard can say i told you so. This afternoon a spokesman from Fairfax County schools says they got it wrong. They acknowledge they made the wrong dee going over protocols to try to keep this from ever happening again. Its a tough call, though. We talk about this every time. A lot of people question why not make the twohour delay early and then evaluate later . Its so funny you say that. Schools cant wait because when they do close or delay, people go why did you delay or close school . We know the feeling as parents. First you find out school is delayed and then classes are closed and you have to scramble. Quite frankly, we didnt expect as much snow as we got, also. There werent as many sympathetic people on twitter. You got to love neighbors helping neighbors during this type of nasty weather. Look at this group of people pushing an suv stuck trying climb a small hill on morgan street in alexandria. After digging in the neighbors are able to get the vehicle moving. Thats the way to do it. Thats team spirit. Yes, but i notice the front wheels were moving pretty fast. You got to ease on. Im a pennsylvaniaian, so i have plenty of experience with snow driving. Ease very gently on the gas, get some traction underneath those wheels. Lets start with a live look outside, our live michael and son weather cam, really bitter cold temperatures on the way. If its feeling cold to you now, its going to get even worse as we head into tonight and tomorrow. Its currently 31 degrees, a few clouds still lingering, very light winds out of the west, northwest. That wind is going to intensify and that is one of the biggest factors that will make it feel so cold tomorrow. Overnight tonight with temperatures getting well below freezing. Well see refreezing on a lot of those slick surfaces and untreated surfaces. Some of those deicing agents only work to a certain temperature. Some of us will dip down to about 20 degrees tonight and that will not be cold enough to support melting of those deicing agents. So we could have refreezing even on surfaces that have light treatment. Wednesday morning it will be very windy and cold. In the afternoon it gets worse and well see wind chills in the maybe Single Digits, even subzero wind chills on wednesday night. A snow shower is possible wednesday. Thursday its not going to be as wednesday, but its still going to be awfully cold. On satellite and radar you can see that we are done with the snow and now actually a hole in the clouds breaking up here. Thats why we just have partly cloudy skies currently at Reagan National. On 9 futurecast we are clear overnight tonight, but then the arctic blast arrives. These winds will be very strong out of the northwest and eventually be coming straight up northerly. Notice these bands of snow descending in . Of course, this will not produce nearly as much snow as we had early this morning, but a lake effect snow shower is possible wednesday afternoon. This is coming down from lakes erie and ontario. We could get a quick dusting wednesday afternoon from that. Then its going to be frigid. Temperatures will be well below freezing all day long on both wednesday and thursday. Thursday at least the winds relax. Overnight partly to mostly cloudy. It will get a bit breezy and watch out for those refreezing areas, 20 to 26 for your overnight lows with winds out of the northwest 10 to 15 Miles Per Hour. Tomorrow morning temperatures will be in the 20s, partly cloudy, a few flurries possible but the lake effect snow machine gets going in the afternoon as winds get stronger. High temperature tomorrow between 25 and 30 degrees, wind chills in the Single Digits with winds out of the north, northwest sustained 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour gusting near 40 Miles Per Hour.
