Health alert right now about a growing number of viral meningitis cases at the university of maryland. Doctors have confirmed 19 cases of viral meningitis among University Students this semester. Thats up from saturday when doctors said there were fewer than ten cases. Viral meningitis is serious, lo rarely deadly. All this month, we told you how a safe place to play is a basic right for every child. And for over a year, the Homeless Childrens play time project has worked tirelessly to get a playground at the shelter for its youngest residents. That playground is finally a reality, but there is still an urgent need for money to keep the playground open and safe. And this is how some very special people will benefit from your muchneeded donation. The first thing they see is the jail. And over to their left, theres an abandoned building. Behind, theres another abandoned building. Theres a meth clinic. They see signs of desperation and death. Yeah, absolutely. Lar sen describes the desolate landscape in clear view of the children who have no place to go. Their temporary home at d. C. s largest family shelter is no sanctuary. Every child needs to let loose and relax at the end of a long day, even the best of circumstances. And our children are compounded by the stress of homelessness. So its even more important for our kids. So this playground now offers a respite from the harsh reality that engulfs the d. C. General campus. Its for the big kids, too. Its a good thing for them to burn off some of their energy when they come home from school. In order for that playground to stay open, it has to be supervised at all times and that takes money. Open up their minds, their parents will be happy. They dont see the kids in the street. Your donation can help them continue to do that. Children are looking around them for messages from the adults around them and their environment as to what their value and worth is. We want them to feel like they matter and they deserve a playground like this. And we know you feel the same way. So give us a call right now at 2028955560. Okay, 17 degrees cooler than we were this time yesterday. 18 degrees cooler in charlottesville. Cumberland is 20 degrees cooler than it was yesterday. And 20 degrees cooler up in philadelphia. Downtown, 10 00 or 11 00. 8 00 tonight on the future cast, were clearing to the north and west of 95. Some lingering clouds. Prince georges county. But the showers are gone. By 10 00, want to walk the dog, no worries. 56 downtown. Low 50s in the suburbs. And then by morning, generally clear to partly cloudy. Temperatures will fall back into the 40s, even downtown will be in the upper 40s. Low 40s gaithersburg, maybe 43 in manassas. 44, 45 in mcclane. A chilly start. Nothing crazy. By 8 00, were still in the 40s, lots of sunshine and by 1 00, want to walk to lunch . Light jacket. Temperatures in the 50s. By 4 00, were flirting with 60 downtown. While the suburbs to the west and north will probably hold in the upper 50s. And then by 6 00, temperatures still low to mid 50s, but generally clear. And by 8 00, we fall into the upper 40s in manassas, leesburg, and gaithersburg and hang on to the low 50s. By 10 30, want to walk the dog, plan on temperatures generally in the 40s. Its going to be mostly sunny, so winds are going to be in check. Halloween, cool, clouds return. And showers will develop friday night. Again, get the kids in by 9 00 or 10 00. And then by saturday, we issued a yellow alert, cold and wet, 53, and that may be generous. Mountain snow showers. Snow could get as close to us as cumberland. Turn the clocks back one hour on saturday, thats good news. And then mid 50s on sunday with sunshine and we see some moderating temperatures. Maybe 70 next tuesday and mid 60s next wednesday with a few showers. Thank you, topper. A big response today to a home in arlington where police were told someone had invaded a huge mansion along chambridge road where they found a stolen car in the driveway. But after that, the story gets sketchy. The home is owned by a multimillionaire and police say they have been called there before on numerous occasions. This time a female guest called them when two men she did not know entered the home. For a variety of reasons, being from drug activity to reported allegedly having a number of valuable art pieces stolen, so theres an extensive history of those responding to the residents. Very bizarre. At this point, police have not charged anyone with the incident. Pope francis offers up his surprising reviews on evolution. That story is just coming up. And after the break, a big time donation to keep the playground at d. C. General up and running and you can help, too. Just call 2028955560. And as we head into break, a look at some of those gas prices not driving us nearly as crazy these days. You can fill up for just 2. 98 a gallon at the b. P. Located at 4101 alabama avenue southeast. We all know washingtons broken. But to fix it, it takes people who are independent. And willing to work across the aisle. Thats what ive tried to do in business, as your governor. And in the senate. Because its the only way were gonna solve big problems. Like cutting our national debt, fixing the va, or. Bringing good jobs to virginia. Its been a great honor to represent you. And if you rehire me, ill work everyday. To make virginia even stronger. Play is important for all children. And thats why the Homeless Children play time project, the Greater Washington board of trade and pepco all teamed up to make a playground possible for the children living at the d. C. General shelter. Joining me now, pepco holding, she is the Vice President for Corporate Citizenship and social responsibility. Its a mouthful. But we know that you do good things in the community. And so i guess the question is, why did pepco decide that this mission to help Children Play was so important that you put this much money behind it . First of all, safety is a number one core value for pepco. Safe and reliable electric service. But also about the community and wanting to help keep safe everyone who lives within the community. So, when we went to visit Kevin Fitzgerald and myself went to d. C. General to visit Homeless Childrens play time project and what they were doing there. The conversation was around the need for safe play outside. And when we saw, we decided we needed to support. And thats what we did. And so we have been side by side with Homeless Childrens play time project for the past year and a half or so. Working to help get this playground built. Its one thing to make a commitment in word. Its quite another to make it indeed. And the you have come here today to make a significant donation to the Homeless Childrens play time project. We should bring in our chief defender of play. Who is the cofounder and executive director for the Homeless Childrens play time project. Youre always fine when people want to give you money. And so debbie, you want to make a presentation now. I do. One thing i want to say is this has been a collaboration wins effort from pepco to the board of trade and the many businesses who already stepped up and then d. C. Government. We cant forget them as well. But, for pepco, our contribution for 2014 is in the amount of 25,000 as you know. So 25,000 to help make sure there is safe, supervised play for the children. And coming in 2015, we are giving another 25,000 to ensure that the safe play continues. That is our commitment. Thats our commitment to the community. 50,000. Absolutely. Thank you so much. Be right there with you. Thank you so much. Pepco really has been with us every step of the way and such an amazing example of the business communities. Debbie jarvis, thank you so much for being here. And we know that you want to help us reach our goal of raising 150,000. You may not have 25,000, but if you have 25, if youve got 5, whatever you can do will help maintain and staff this playground for years to come. We have volunteers from pepco and the play time project here to take your call. So dial 2028955560. Keep them busy. Well be back. Thank you so much, lesli. Thanks so much to pepco.
