He is linked to the deaths of three prominent local Community Members in alexandria. Ruth anne legado, and nancy dunning, the wife of then, alexandria sheriff, jeff dunning. There were some dramatic reactions announced stowed in announced ctoday along a notorious dangerous section of route 1 in college park. All were pedestrians run down by drivers late at night. Scott broom is there to report on major safety announcements that are going in before the university of maryland goes back into session. In short order, this is going to be a very different section of roadway with a lower speed limit, with fencing to keep pedestrians from jaywalking and with a new signal here to keep drivers from blowing through the crosswalk. Sounds good, honestly, because a lot of people have been getting hit. Marylands highway administrator announcing the changes today, as we found workers at this notorious intersection beginning the planning for the installation of that new pedestrian traffic signal. It is just an accident waiting to happen. You really do need a stoplight here. Improvements that pierce has announced today will make a dramatic impact on to safety of route 1 next to university of maryland. State Officials Say they began a study here last fall, but then came the deaths of three pedestrians since january. All of them students or former students mowed down by cars late at night as they crossed the road while the bars were closing. In the past two years, we arrested over 500 drunk drivers on this highway in the vicinity of college park. The changes announced today would lower the speed limit to 25 through the busy university of maryland corridor. Meanwhile, fencing will be installed on the median to stop an epidemic of jaywalking. And a pedestrian activated light will be installed at this intersection, where a 22year old woman was killed crossing earlier this month. The traffic light will be in by the end of october, but the lower speed limit and the fencing, that will all be in place by the end of august before more than 30,000 students flood back here to begin their classes at the university. Members of the Prince Georges County council met today to hear from opponents and supporters of the project. About a third of the lawmakers werent there, sot vote was moved to next week. Construction on that project could get going within just a few weeks. Gamblers could start placing their bets in 2016. It was a violent weekend in the district. Seven people were shot. Three killed and theres been a spike in homicides across the city this year. And those murders maybe just the beginning of the pain for the victims families. I can truly say, i know how they feel. Sandra johnsons daughter, the daughter of a d. C. Police detectives was also murdered during a violent spree. Over memorial day weekend in 1990. Now 24 years later with her daughters killer serving life in prison, the pain is still not gone away. Thank god every day your child comes home and you can tell them good night and always tell them you love them. Every single day. Because you never know when you may not be able to say it again. Yesterday morning, 21year old, thomas in Montgomery Village and derek price of District Heights were killed as they sat at a car. A third occupant was wounded. Two other people were wounded along lincoln road a short time later, and 22yearold hemp el fid was killed in a separate incident on 6th street in southeast. The murder on 6th Street Southeast was the 67th so far this year. That is up 22 from the 45 at the same period last year. There has been one arrest. Jimmy flemming is charmed with two counts of murder. They are looking for the publics help. They are offering a 25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction. Anybody can lose a child to murder. Sandra johnson says the families of these latest victims should reach out to an Organization Called parents with murdered children for help. She works with them. Flemming who was charged in the capital street case was formally charged with murder late this afternoon. A man accused of detonating explosives outside a family members home in bethesda is now awaiting extradition to maryland. Heres how it all got started. 2 00 sunday morning, a man calls 911 reports his sonin law was trying to break in. When police get there, they find two explosive devices. 6yearold, mark was taken into custody after he ran into fairfax county. Police say he was involved in a divorce and custody dispute. D. C. Council voted to the veto was 121. Only tommy wells sided with the mayor. And viewing the plan, gray said he was concerned the citys new streetcar system could be jeopardized, but council chair, Phil Mendelson said it will be completed. This is just over the past three hours. 3 11 a downed tree near warrenton. And another system went through warrenton, produced some large trees. Its going to show a solid line rolling through the immediate metro area. In fact, no warnings in the immediate metro area, instead of the panhandle of West Virginia. But, were looking at frequent lightning and the possibility of some bigtime street flooding and winds flooding is still a possibility, but the good news is, the storms are moving fast. When you have higher density of lightning strikes. That generally indicates theres a lot of ice in the clouds. So, we could see some hail as well. The big picture over the next three hours, heres the radar. One solid line is about to march through and cross over i 95. A lot of lightning with these storms. Thats one of the earmarks of these thunderstorms and this is the second line of showers and storms that prompted the warnings out toward hagerstown. This is the storm now that prompted the new Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Prince Georges County, ann Anne Arundel County. Out 50, its going to be slow going. That is now prompted a warning in Anne Arundel County. The portion that was in effect for Prince Georges County has been allowed to expire, but now we are tracking another line that will move through Loudoun County, i believe, this line that you can see up in the winchester area moving toward the panhandle of West Virginia, or through the panhandle of West Virginia as well. But these are not severe thunderstorms. These thunderstorms are still below severe limits, but they do, as you mentioned, have plenty of lightning with them and bring some heavy downpours as well.
