Check this out, a mark train smashed into a down tree on the tracks west of brunswick, maryland this morning. That was just the beginning of just a very long ordeal, which involved more and more falling trees and train tracks. One of the biggest problems left behind by the ice, the power outages. Pg and e is working to restore power to 73,000 customers. Potomac has 50,000 outages, more than half of them in frederic county. The ice is behind us, but it is going to be a chilly one tonight. Topper shutt joins us. Top, looks like everyone is going to dip below freezing. Make you feel better, folks up in frederic county, there are 500,000 people without power in philadelphia. All right, heres the storm. There it goes. The magenta is the mixed precipitation. The green is the rain. We have breaks in the ouds now and colder and dryer air is moving in. 40 downtown. 39 in manassas and 37 in leesburg. Were looking at temperatures 40. Our cold wedge never broke all day. We got above freezing, but never really broke. Heres the problem tonight. 25 for a low in bethesda. 24 in fairfax. 25 in springfield. 27 down toward waldorf. So, black ice. So heres the thing. The roads may look wet late tonight and early tomorrow morning, but its actually frozen. And the same advice i can give to you on your driveway if you are walking to get the paper early tomorrow morning, it may look wet, but it actually is frozen. For tonight, partial clearing. Council has given tentative approval to a bill that would require the mayor to identify millions of local dollars to pay for local scholarships. Threatening to pull 30 million in federal money as a result. Bruce johnson reports the d. C. Delegate is asking president obama to intervene. I get disability. Annette has a daughter who will graduate this year from Wiley College in texas. Been in the tech program for how many years . 4 1 2. Part of her tuition comes from a 30 million fund that was set up by the congress for d. C. Students so they can attend state colleges anywhere in the country at in state tuition. What if the tech program disappeared for young people coming behind your daughter . What would you think of that . I think it would have a negative impact. The d. C. Council by unanimous vote approved its own College Assistance program. A bill councilman david modified with the intent to supplement congress Tuition Assistance funding. Many students who cant afford to go to school. Tag isnt enough. 5,000 youngsters who depend upon d. C. Tech. Eleanor Holmes Norton said leaders on capitol hill have told her the house and senate will no longer fund a Tuition Assistance program if the council authorizes funding for a similar effort. Every republican and democratic president not only supported the program, but usually has added to the program. The d. C. Delegate is writing the president asking for help to keep the federal dollars. D. C. Council members say they are prepared to authorize funds to replace those federal dollars that are lost. And ed mercer says it would be money well spent. Because children, they need all the assistance they need. Keep in mind, this is an Election Year and no member of the d. C. Council was about to vote against spending local dollars for local college scholarships. A school it specialist in big trouble accused of trying to make inappropriate contact with children. Patrick has been employed by the Fairfax County School District for the last two years. Police sources tell us he was on the computer with a 15year old boy. When he attempted to meet up with that teen yesterday, police were there waiting for him and slapped the cuffs on him. Another smash and grab burglary in our area. This one happened at a radio shack. Police say someone broke into the store in the middle of the night. The radio shack burglary comes one day after a similar break in at a subway shop. And cbs 4 are getting out of the tobacco business. The Company Plans to stop selling cigarettes in october. It was a big announcement today and the move is being praised by health groups. The Company Stands to lose billions in the process. Terri brings us the latest from los angeles. This fall, cvs shoppers will no longer find cigarettes behind the counter. It will stop selling Tobacco Products by october 1. Ceo, larry, told cbs this morning cvs stands to lose about 2 billion a year. Its a real contradiction to talk about all the things we are doing to help people on their path to better health. Several Health Organizations are praising the move by cvs and so is the white house. President obama, who himself struggled to stop smoking, says todays decision will help advanced my administrations efforts to reduce tobacco related deaths, cancer, and heart disease. But the move wont hurt Tobacco Companies much. Drugstores account for a tiny percentage of cigarette sales. Tobacco maker, rg reynolds says we value the longterm relationship with cvs and respect their decision. Longtime smoker says now shell have to find another place to buy her cigarettes. I dont think its going to make an impact on people not smoking. Health groups are pushing other retailers to follow cvs and stop selling tobacco. For cbs news, los angeles. In tonights health alert, more children are dying this season from the flu and that includes one child from northern virginia. Its a grim reminder as the illness sweeps across our region that we all need to take steps to stop it from spreading. Its late in the season, but the flu is spreading fast in our area. Especially in virginia. According to the centers for disease control, the commonwealth is one of ten states with a high level of flu activity. The doctor saw a huge influx of patients in falls church over the last two weeks. More Younger Age Group are getting the flu this season. This is higher than normal and dangerous. Especially since Young Children and elderly patients are the most vulnerable. One child died recently from the flu in northern virginia. And 37 other children died across the country. So dr. Cohn says it is important to take action to keep the virus from spreading. You can be getting flu and not have a symptom, but you can transmit it. If you become six, limit your contact with others. Wash your hands frequently. Avoid touching your face. Germs spread fast around the eyes, the nose, and mouth. Wipe surfaces that might be contaminated. Cover your mouth when you cough, and its not too late to get a vaccine if you havent already. And you can actually cough and flu virus can be sitting up to 8 hours on the surface. Releafs relief is on the way in a month as spring approaches. Democrats and republicans are debating the meaning of a new report indicating 2 million americans will leave their full time jobs because of the Affordable Care act. Its about a young addict named ryan whose troubled life had been documented by Andrea Mccarren and photo journalist, joe martin. They followed martin to a two year Treatment Program in north carolina. As is often the case with recovering addicts, ryan had a breves setback and left that program after being clean for nearly six months, but hes starting at a new Treatment Facility in florida and we wish him all the best. A committee is out with a report about the vatican. The panel for childrens rights demands all clergymen suspected of being pedophiles be removed immediately. A 30yearold man is applauding the report. I feel very violated and for many times, victims have been doubted there were stories. We have doubted. And it raises all sorts of questions. You talk about the fact that you know, thousands of people, this is horrible, but thousands of people are dying from heroin and other drug overdoses every single day. And the rest are usually, they dont come this quickly. When you talk about a high profile case, it opens up a whole other can of worms. Why the urgency there . But in any case, this is one of those celebrity death stories that will just keep unraveling and keep getting updates every single day about this. We have to think about, you know, the Whitney Houstons and the Michael Jacksons and the heath ledgers of the world. This is another case where it will be development after development. And you have to think that police at some point had to look at his phone, look at his Text Messages, his phone calls, because the four people, one of them has become an informant and he turned over some Text Messages and in those Text Messages, there were messages from Phillip Seymour hoffman suggesting to kick the habit. Things are going to come out every single day. Everything is not going to be completely accurate because this is a celebrity situation, too. So, every outlet is going to be the first to get the information out and once we, you know, a few weeks from now, a few months from now will have the complete story hopefully, but for right now, its a scramble. Can we get it first . Can we get it out there . Its tough, because its our job to try to get to the bottom of what we do know for sure. We know Phillip Seymour hoffman did spend some time trying to get himself clean in years passed and his story ended this way. But we are hearing that selena gomez, which is much younger and very much in the beginning stages of her career secretly checked herself into rehab. Although the folks in her camp make a point of saying it was not related to any Substance Abuse that she had some emotional issues that she needed to work through. Yes, selena gomez is certainly an all american girl. She was the disney star and even though she dated Justin Bieber on and off, he is turning into a bad boy, she was able to maintain her good girl image. I applaud her for this, not doing it in secret, but coming clean and saying yes, this happened, and her people did kind of have to say it wasnt a Substance Abuse problem. And what makes me proud of her is that this could have been another brittney. This could have been another, you know, lindsey situation where you dont get the help. You listen to the people around you that say youre fine and she said you know what . Im not fine. It sounds to me like she needed a break and to get some peace. We dont know the specifics, but this sort of vague, you know wording of the statement from her rep, it sounds like she needed a break. How old is she . Shes 20. Shes about 20, 21. She has done so good for being selfpossessed enough to know, and being proactive saying i need to take a step back. Lets talk about something happier. Queen elizabeth asking Kate Middleton to you know, maybe make the headline longer. Thats the thing. That Kate Middleton, yes, she had some wardrobe malfunctions, weve all been there, but thats not a short skirt per se. But the queen is the queen and you know, i think from what weve heard and read is that she is saying kate, i need you to be more princesslike. It sounds like she wants a lot of things to happen. You know, well see how that goes. Its interesting to see how this works. Didnt we say the queen is broke . How is she going to figure out how to do all of these major alterations . So we started thinking about hem lines through history. We thought we would take a look at hem lines. Obviously, we have seen Kate Middleton. She worn a lot of longer hem lines. Interesting to see that was picked out. Not a lot of mini skirts on her. Lets start with Marilyn Monroe. Lets go back in time. What the hem lines used to look like. We have pictures because you suggested that through the progression of the years, we have seen them get shorter and shorter. Now this is the infamous picture of Marilyn Monroe with the fan blowing and the thing is, this was actually very long skirt. Thats what i was going to say. By todays standards, this is perfectly fine. The queen would be happy with the length of this skirt. Yes, its flying up, but its not a short skirt. So it shows that sensibilities have changed. Marilyn to twiggy, who was a lot smaller, very thin. That was during the mod period. Everything was about shifts and being short so you could wear it with your tall go go boots. She is so thin, she could do anything. And we move forward a bit and you get into the timeless classic style of Carolyn Kennedy shoes to wear very long hem lines. She did. She wore a lot of sleek. She was a calvin kline fan. She wore fitted stuff, but it wasnt tight. It was tailored perfectly to her. She wore long dresses and right below the knee and it was classic, all american style. We have the technology, we know its available. But were not going to do it because it costs too much money. Your loved one is not worth our money. They are making decisions that are clearly life and death. The rodericks case is not unusual. According to the Patient Advocate Foundation, which fights for consumers access to healthcare free of charge. Thousands are denied coverage for potentially life saving procedures every year. Theres great hope through Patient Advocate Foundation and theres not any cost to the consumer at all. In the rodericks case, multiple letters of appeal without success. They are the ones we turn to to save lives and they keep turning us down. This is not getting any smaller and its going to get more complicated if it gets bigger. Its going to spread more. The couple has been in limbo since his cancer diagnosis. And each day they wait, mikes condition deteriorates. If nothing can be done for me, hopefully this will maybe benefit somebody else. How often does it decline paying for the procedure . And why did signa reject Mike Rodericks best chance of survival . Days later, signa reversed its decision. Lynn sent us an email. Mike got approved for the cyber knife treatment. I am so excited, i cant stop crying. Its priceless. I know she always has my back and that means everything to me. Now, the couple that shared 34 years of marriage and laughter are hoping theyll have a giftof many more. Bottom line is, i cant live without her. I dont want this to end. Thats my best friend.
