Trying to avoid or at least end the federal Government Shutdown. House took three votes to restore funding to specific areas veterans, d. C. Government and National Parks and museums. All three votes failed. Delia goncalves is live on capitol hill looking for signs of progress this morning. A new day, new hope, delia. Reporter we certainly hope so. A lot of those folks who were furloughed yesterday heading home probably sleeping in this morning, certainly hope there will be some kind of compromise very soon. A sign of that hope is that we are starting to see just a small handful of Congress Members who seem to be bending to the pressure, willing to compromise a bit but the blame game continues. President obama calling this the republican shutdown. Speaker boehner blaming democrats for slamming the door on negotiations. Case in point, last nights piecemeal bill, the house voted on that would have eased some of the pain immediately felt by folks by reopening National Parks, restoring funding to veterans and allowing the district to use its local money during the shutdown but Senate Democrats say it is all or nothing. We shouldnt be breaking down components and funding them in a piecemeal basis. Its fairly straightforward for us to adopt the c. R. Or continuing resolution that funds the government. I think its a shame that the democrats are united it seem like in opposition to these bills. These are very straightforward simple bills. Senate democrats, if theyll just sit down with us, we just think thats more important. Putting people first rather than protecting their own exemptions. Theyre not going to get back the Affordable Health care act but there must be other things they want that could be traded. The last sound bite d. C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes norton. Reporter you can see and hear that she is willing to possibly trade off with republicans. Of course she is not a voting congresswoman here on capitol hill. But there are some more signs of hope and compromise. Well have more details on that coming up in the next half hour. Mike, andrea, back to you. Delia, thank you. You want to sound off . We have a website where you can do it. Weigh in with your opinion on tellwusa9. Com. Were debating on whether or not congress should be paid during the shutdown. One viewer says, quote, yes, they should be paid. They need to feed their families while most say no. They shut down the government, they do not deserve a paycheck either. How do you feel . Go to tellwusa9. A surprise announcement from the university of howard. The University President is retiring. He plans to leave at the end of the year after a fiveyear run. Hes been under intense pressure by the board of trustees over howards weak finances. A proposal from Montgomery County superintendent joshua star wants high schools to start classes 50 minute later, at 8 15 and then let out at 3 00 p. M. Middle schools would run from 7 45 to 2 30 and he wants to lengthen the Elementary School day by 30 minutes. If its approved, these changes would take effect for the 2015 16 school year. Its 5 05. Time for the latest your money report of the morning. It is indeed. Thats why jessica is here. Good morning, jess. As for wall street, you know, basically shrugged off the Government Shutdown. The big question now is how long is this going to last. Traders are expecting this to be short limiting economic damage. In the meantime, though, we did get encouraging news on the economy yesterday. That gave stocks a boost. Manufacturing expanded at its fastest pace in two years last month. The dow added 62 points. It finished the day at 15,192. The s p 500 rose 13 points. The nasdaq surged 46 points. Thanks to the monster rally for tech stocks the nasdaq is up 200 from its march 2009 market low. If only we had invested then. The dow and s p 500 are up 132 and 50 respectively during the same period. The startups havent been the only big drivers of the nasdaqs rally. You can thank strength from small and miz Side Companies and big gains for health care and retail stocks. Theyve been doing really well recently. Theres some relief for federal workers furloughed. They can get until employment checks in most states but the money comes with a catch. If congress decides late other to retroactively to pay the workers which would be a good thing, they would have double dipped into the system. Therefore they would be asked to return the unemployment money. The Virginia Employment Commission has already posted a notice on their website saying if virginia residents get back pay, they will be required to repay any unemployment benefits. So just so you know, if you get those checks, you may have to pay them back. Another good reason to end this quickly so this mess doesnt unfold over several weeks. Exactly. If youre in a position to apply for unemployment benefits, you dont want to waste any time. You want to do it as quickly as you possibly can. What do you have for us in the next halfhour . Were going to be looking at the Affordable Care act from day one. Thanks, jess. A suspicious device leads to a shutdown of a major airport in the southeast of the that story is coming up. Well, you can fight but you dont shut the government down. I have said im not growing to do anything other than vote for a clean c. R. I will for these bills tonight because theres no harm done in doing it but as far as sending any more amendments to the senate or any type of continuing resolution, if its not a clean one, im not going to vote for it. Ill tell you, there was a lot of interest right out of the gate when obamacare started. Day one yesterday, Health Exchanges opened as planned yesterday morning. Americans have six months to enroll. Some people wasted no time checking out their options. Health Officials Say at least 2. 8 Million People visited the main website by the afternoon. And many were met with startup glitches, like the inability to create an account. An expert says many more problems are likely in the next few weeks. One of those glitches simply has to do with data transfer. Is it possible for the federal government, for example, to transfer to the exchanges in all of the states, information about medicare and Medicaid Eligibility and about subsidy eligibility. And without that information, its very hard for these states to charge the proper premiums in the exchange to individuals who may qualify, for example, for subsidies or for other forms of federal care. Some of the problems we saw yesterday included the live chat function loading slowly. Air messages saying the system error messages saying the system is down. Some received incomplete pages probably due to heavy traffic. Marylands site was down for the morning and sluggish into the evening. The white house has long said there would be problems in the beginning but it hopes to sign up seven Million People during the first year and aims to eventually sign up at least half a million or nearly 50 million uninsured americans through an expansion of medicare or government subsidized plans. All in all, kind of as expected. And the people who are running the week site, they were not furloughed. They were considered to be exemption from the Government Shutdown so it wasnt a question of staffing. More question of traffic. Exactly. Again we said yesterday you dont have to rush into it right now or even this week. You have until when . Six months. Things may hopefully straighten out by then. High pressure to the south and west not expected all that much going on. Theres a tropical storm, by the way, central atlantic. Not to worry about that. But some moisture in the caribbean which may become the next tropical depression. That could potentially head toward florida and might even impact our weather by early next week, just providing some moisture for us. We certainly could use it. 86 this afternoon. Warm and dry. Tonight 64 in town with 50s north and west. Light winds. Tomorrow 84. More of a southeasterly wind than a westerly wind. Just a tad cooler. Still way warm for this time of year. 86 on friday. She was up so late last night, she was able to watch the 11 00 news because they was out at a very important event last night. At the afi silver theater, it was the premier washington, d. C. Screening of decoding annie parker. Youve heard our interviews on air with this remarkable woman a threetime Breast Cancer survivor. This is her story and also the story of dr. The director and writer Steve Bernstein was there. He told us in the beginning do laugh because there are some funny moments in this and after meeting annie parker and seeing what she went through, you know cancer was afraid to take hold of her. The congressmen started to meet the vets and they decided to move the barricades and let them into the memorial which they did. The Government Shutdown could affect two College Football games this weekend, including navys sold out game against air force in annapolis. You were supposed to see it on cbs.
