However, if nothing is done in the next eight days, those automatic budget cuts will go into effect one week from tomorrow. It is 5 34. Lets talk money. Jessica doyle is back with more on how unprepared most americans probably including three of us are not as well prepared when it comes to retirement. Well, the question were asking this morning is are you saving enough for your retirement. This is kind of a little bit of a wakeup call. In a new study, most adults are not putting enough away for their retirement. The study was commissioned by hsbc and found more than half of the worlds working population is not preparing adequately. Nearly one in five workers arent saving anything at all. The survey found that most blame the daily cost of living as the biggest reason why folks just cannot afford to save. Among those who do save on average, they expect retirement to last 18 years, but they truly believe theyre savings will run out after just ten years. So to figure out if youre on track, consider these guidelines. Fidelity investments released back in september. The Mutual Fund Company suggests you save at least ail times your final salary to meet basic income needs in retirement. By age 35, think about 35, you should aim to have the equivalent of your annual salary in savings. By age 40, you should set a goal to save twice your salary. By 50 you want to look at five times your annual salary. Five times by age 55 and six times by age 60. So heres an example. Lets say you make 60,000 a year. Would you need to have 240,000 in savings at age 50 to hit your retirement goals. Fidelity of course is the nations largest 401 k at managersor. 12 million account holders so far with an average balance of about 73,000. So that gives you a sense that people are saving but theyre not there yet. Those are some big numbers. Those are huge numbers which gives you an understanding of why people say youll have to drag me out of here, keep working till i die. 70, 75. Exactly. Thats why you see so many retirees in their 70s working parttime jobs because even with Social Security they just dont have enough. Who even know whats going to happen with Social Security. So you need to rely on yourself. What if numbers like that are going to move the age up that a lot of people say theyre going to do. Theyll have to do something. Were always very focused on our children. So were throwing money into 529 plans. You need to reevaluate that if youre not saving for yourself, you shouldnt be saving for college because you can take loans against college. You cannot take loans against your own retirement. Good point. Even if youre not close to retirement age, jessica will be saving us some money when she unveils todays daily deals right after the break. Lance armstrong dies he will not tell all decides lenot tell all to the agency that has the power to reduce his lifetime welcome back. 5 39 on this thursday morning. Another cold, frigid morning. The plan would replace virginias 17. 5 cents per gallon gasoline tax with a 3. 5 wholesale gasoline tax. And boost the current 5 sales tax another three tenths of a percent to 5. 3 . So many of us parents especially are heart sick over this weeks murders in Prince Georges County at a local high school. Another High School Tragedy we all remember it back in 1999, the shooting at columbine in littleton, colorado. That led to the formation of something called rachels challenge. Us with is peter, a presenter for rachels challenge and this talks about trying to reach out to the community when something awful like this happens. Lets talk about who rachel is first, how this started. Rachel was the first she was 17 years old and she was the First Student to be killed at columbine. And after her death, her parents found a series of diaries that she wro. The theme in those she wrote. The theme in those diaries was kindness and compassion. So rachel and her life reached out to people, whether it was in school or her community through kindness and compassion. She wrote about it. So her parents found that and that became the theme for rachels challenge. Thats ravel right rachel right there, a video of her. The interesting thing is the parents and rachels brother and now you and other presenters around the country are reaching out to people to try to have a discussion about this, how we can change peoples hearts, how we can change peoples minds when it comes to violence, when it comes to bullying, things that happen in school that leads to tragedies like n. What are you doing to try to reach out to communities . Rachels challenge is develop programs. We go from elementary on through college. We go out and speak and present the message. As i said its the message of kindness and compassion. There are different programs that do that. Theyre age appropriate to the programs, to the schools i should say. So weve been out there for 13 years. Weve talked to over 18 Million People in that time. And weve been all around the world actually. One of the things that you obviously when you go to a school, you can talk to an Assembly Full of students but the parents need to be an integral part of this as well. Truly. In reaching out to the parents, if you want to call this call to action today is to reach out to the parents and say go to rachels challenge. Org. There is something you can do. Contapght your contact your School Officials and find out what its all about. One of the things that impacted both you and i and Delia Goncalves who reported on these shootings yesterday is the fact that some of the students who were there had a blank stare when asked about them. Its trying to reach them. Absolutely. Some of them, im no doctor but we know for some of them, its masking that pain. When that happens, that only carries on into adulthood. So the more we can reach out to young hearts now through that, that message of kindness and compassion, it will change. If people want to try to have some tools and find a tool kit when it comes to trying to help students and help parents one deal with a tragedy but two, help to reach them before it becomes critical, theres website they can go to . Rachelschallenge. Org. Its preventative action. A lot of times we hear about these things after they happen. What rachels challenge does, we get there before. I cant tell you how many times weve had students come up to us and actually hand us lists of people they were going after, retribution list or whatever. And they will give that up. Its been its been tremendous for them. Thanks so much for
