The Orlando PoliceDepartment Says 11 officers fire at mateen ultimately killing him but there were other heros that night too. The club bouncer and marine veteran recognized the sound of mateens automatic weapon and unlatched a door to free dozens of club goers trapped inside. I wish i could have saved more to be honest. A lot of people that are dead. And that was architecture adam longo reporting our colleague Andrea Mccarren is also in orlando tonight. She attended a vigil for the victims. Andrea . Reporter thats right, bruce and leslie, and we had the great privilege of speaking with a woman the healing process after tragedy. Shes the pastor of the Charleston Church where nine parishners were gunned down nearly one year ago. Ironically, dr. Clark was scheduled to be in d. C. Well each time i hear of it my heart is broken all over again reverend dr. Betty days clark rushed to orlando to share the heart break of a community. I feel the pain that others feel, i mourn with them and i cry with them because i know what it feels like to have a tragedy knocking at your door. Healing, she says, is as unique as each person whose in morning, orlando like charleston will never be the same. And the good news is that its not because we have a sense of collectiveness that we didnt have before. Dr. Clark says there is just something about going through tough times. We are joined now with more on those 49 lives lost. Wusa 9 allyson barber is at National Harbor to explain how you can step up, even if your miles away from orlando. This is beautiful yet heart breaking reminder of the massacre in orlando but remembering is the simple part. For most of us its impossible to forget that almost two days ago one man gunned down 49 innocent people and many of us want to do much more than just remember. Its the people who sacrifice their lives who need to be up lifted and be on peoples slips more than anything else right now. Hundreds of people gathered in Dupont Circle to mourn all of the lives lost in orlando. Some called for change. This is just kind of a reminder that were still coming up on the rough side of the mountain, there needs to be more discussions about changing peoples ideology and really teaching people how to learn to be loving and accepting as opposed to just tolerant of certain things. Others quietly grieve. For many a vigil like this is a big way to support the victims. I think its a great way to show support by bringing the kids down and teaching them what its them that being full, being of the Lgbt Community is not a bad thing. But it isnt the only way. There are blood banks all across the city, still asking for donations. There are fundraisers, one go fund me started by Equality Florida is trying to raise 5 million. Some say the way to lift up every victim, those who survived and those who didnt, is openly showing love. Go to clubs and dance, without fear. I believe this will change the hearts and minds of others and i believe that this is the best way to honor the memory of our brothers and sisters in orlando. Reporting for wusa 9, allyson barber. Tonight Speaker Paul Ryan lead the house of representatives in a moment of silence to honor victims of the orlando shootings, but that silence came shouting as the house called for votes on gun control bills. Bruce and leslie back to you. Adam thanks a lot. Tonight people of all religions came together with one goal in mind, dispell fear and hate. Wusa 9 joins us now with how theyre trying to break down barriers. Reporter well guys tonight was simple. Unity. Whats the difference between these two men or these two . How about these two women or this man and this woman . Or this kid and that kid . This packed room would say the differences dont matter. Lets let go of making judgment on physical appearance but get to know each other. Scores of people getting to know each other at this vigil in sterling a day after the massacre in orlando. Tonight 49 rings for 49 victims. Hate but here the response was the opposite. The whole world is watching us today they are watching this great tragedy happen, how will the americans handle this and react and we want to make sure that the message of love goes out. In today where religion is accepting, its accepting because thats what the world is today. The world today is diverse says thelma, and so is the room shes in, white, black, brown, theyre all here and they want everyone to see they are all okay with each other. Do we want to show that we are friends and that we do Work Together and its one way to answer those fears . Wusa 9 Facebook Page ben park says this is a Political Movement to take over the world in the name of islam. Reginald bigs says orlando attacker, fort hood shooter, San Bernardino shooter, the chairman of the adams family says terrorists dont represent his faith. Basically they are to islam. They are now putting themselves on the outside of islamic values. Inside this room the hope is to simply talk. Get to know each other better. In turn learn about and understand each other. I just wish people would be more tolerant of each other. If nobody is bothering you why do you want to bother them . Sounds simple enough. Folks out there say that its not just about thoughts and prayers. They also encourage actions. Its not just about the sort of moments though, without telling people which way to vote they encourage folks to keep pressuring lawmakers to take action. Bruce, less a . He spoke about the need to address both terrorism and gun violence. We have to counter extremism, but we also have to make sure that it is not easy for somebody who decides they want to harm people in this country to be able to obtain weapons. Gunman omar mateen legally bought the Assault Rifle he used to shoot more than 100 people even though he was on the fbis radar for ties to terrorists groups. 91 of those who try to act as terrorism legally buy guns in america. Senate democrats called on colleagues to immediately pass legislation that would prevent people on terror watch lists from buying firearms or explosives. President ial candidates Hillary Clinton and donald trump are presenting drastically different approaches on Counter Terrorism and gun control. Trump doubled down on his ll muslims from entering the u. S. The bottom line is that the only reason the killer was in america in the first place was because we allowed his family to come here. While clinton said the only way to stop lone wolf attacks is through cooperation with muslim americans. We should be intensifying contacts in those communities not scape goating or isolating them. Clinton said she wants to create task forces to find and stop lone wolf attacks before they happen. Cbs news. The white house.
