Committed to being out and causing some kind of trouble. Were with a small group of other journists who banded together journalists who banded together to report on this safely. Baltimore police have brought occupyu out some large Armored Vehicles. A a mine resistant vehicle that is used in iraq and afghanistan to make sure they are safely able to control the crowds tonight. We will continue to report for you as best we can to see how this goes. For now, reporting live from baltimore, garrett haake, wusa 9. I see a number of reports where writers rioters were acting aggressively towards reporters. Did you experience any of that . Or witness any of that tonight . Reporter not especially. Most of the anger seemed to be directed at the police. In fact, most of the day we were welcomed in by people in baltimore, including members of various gangs that had banded together to try to make sure the to stay at a safe environment. A few minutes before the curfew started a lost organizers, folks who had been the driving force of keeping today a peaceful day went home. And this much smaller were talking a few dozen people in this element that wanted to cause trouble sort of took over the scene. And very quickly it became clear it was not going to be a safe place to be anymore tonight. Garrett, did you find or see any police making arrests of any of these people causing the confrontation . Reporter we werent really able to see that, derek because we moved back with the line of police. It didnt look like they were trying to arrest people so much as they were trying to clear some of these intersections that had been so crowded all day. And frankly to protect themselves because as the police are able to march forward the people who were throwing bottles and rocks and other objects were having to move further back and sort of keep them out of range. Since we have moved back, we have seen some of these Armored Vehicles crisscrossing the street. It was more of a clearing of that primary intersection that seemed to be the main interest of the police. What about the clergy and ministers and people there trying to sort of help the police in dispersing the crowd . What are you hearing from them . Were you able to talk to any of them . What do they think about all this . Reporter again, they are extremely disappointed. About the last half hour before the curfew started and the first few minutes after it started there was one last effort to get people to go home. From some of those clergy members and, in fact, congressman Elijah Cummins was the last person to take the bullhorn and try to urge peopling to go home. He said this is his city, too. He lives here. This is his home. He sort of pleaded with people to keep that peaceful spirit they had here daily. But in the end, there doesnt seem to be anyone in this town with enough moral authority to compel everyone to clear the streets. So where you are right now, garrett, can you see are there still any number of protesters still out there or have things calmed down significantly . Reporter well, i think hard to say if it has calmed down, derek but it is certainly scattered. We can see that the police have broken up those large knots of people who were in that primary intersection. But even from where we are, there are people crisscrossing on side streets and moving up and down the streets freely as we sort of retreated back several blocks. There were people throwing trash cans and other debris into the street to try to make it a little harder for officers to get up and down the block. But, again, you may be seeing cars passing by. People are still moving fairly freely on the streets of baltimore. And really, until someone starts to throw something, or doss trouble, it is or cause trouble it is difficult to tell who might be trying to get home and who the troublemakers are. Garrett haake live. Sit tight. We will go back live to you if it warrants it later in the broadcast. For most of the day the protests did remain peaceful as garrett mentioned with many people saying the violence has taken the focus away from the cause for justice for freddie gray the man who died in Police Custody from an unexplained spinal injury. An emergency town hall meeting was held tonight. What is the situation like there . Reporter well, you know at this emergency town hall meeting a few hundred people attended this thing where me stressed that the images we have been seeing over the last 24 hours, the images that garrett just showed you. The images of violence in these streets. I thinks of the National Guardsmen now occupying the streets, that that is not the real baltimore they say. But they do stress, and they admit that the real baltimore does have real problems. The testimony is broken. When it breaks this happens. An emergency town hall meeting tuesday. Blacks and whites, christians and muslims. Different faces and faiths with the same problems. Systematic corruption. At 40 you are just a dysfunction. At 14 youre rejected. Reporter they were called criminals, unconnected with the peaceful protesters. The systemic issues that cause the youth to behave this way is not featured on the news. David bookman is a frustrated teenager from baltimore. I am angry about the way were being viewed as not people, as the way were being viewed as less than what we are as less than what we can be. The way were being treated. This isnt baltimore. This is anarchy. I felt like nobody cared about me. Nobody cared about me. It is so hard to get through school. I wanted to make my mother and grandmother proud of me. We have books from 19 1973 our computers arent updated. The police have ransom students and people think that it is us it is us but it is not. Reporter how do you stop this . There is no easy answer but this Community Says it starts with admitting the problems. They need better training for police, investment in impoverished communities. The struggle is a longterm struggle and the distrust between the police and the black community, and many of us, is something that the city has to take seriously. After this everyone seems to be taking it seriously. I am proud of the youth to be honest with you. Im not happy with the way they based but im proud of them for waking us all up and prompting us to act. Reporter while this so called broken system is being fixed, tonights meeting addressed how to stop Youth Violence and riots we have seen over the last 24 hours. Another complicated one. It will take more than police making arrest, politicians making speeches. They are looking to only clergy but to parents to teachers, football coaches, to youth peers and to gang leaders, believe it or not, to come together to stop the violence. Live in baltimore, mola lenghi for wusa 9. It is one of the most memorable and shared videos from yesterdays riots. A mom slapping her son as we like to say upside the head over and over again after seeing him throw rocks at the cops. Her name toya graham. She spoke exclusively to cbs news. I could see the objects being thrown at the police. I was like oh my god. This is really happening right here. And lo and behold i turn around and i look in this crowd and my son is coming across the street with this hoodie on, and a mask. At that point i just and he gave me eye contact. And at that point, not even thinking about cameras or anything like that that is my only son. And at the end of the day i dont want him to be a freddie gray. But the to stand up there and vandalize police officers, that is not justice. That is not what you know im a single mom. You know i have six children. And i just choose not to live like that no more. Is he the perfect boy . No, hes not. But hes mine. Im just grateful that i was able to get him home and we actually sat back and watched the news and everything and he has facebook friends and everybody you know making comments saying you know you shouldnt be mad at your mother. You should give her a hug and by him seeing everything that was going on, i just hope, not sure, but i hope that he understands the fairness of what was going on last night. Folks want to give that mom a hug. Maryland governor gary hogan encouraged the public to provide help to people in baltimore in the wake of the rioting and looting. Www. Maryland unite. Org. Here in washington d. C. , a group of 25 people gathered outside the Horizon Center to protest Police Violence and stand with the people protesting in baltimore. As i said before, were not out here to destroy. They marched in the streets of china town down pennsylvania avenue towards the white house. Police say close to the group and stopped traffic as they walked and shouted chants. The protest ended before 7 00 p. M. And countless police were on the scene watching the group as soon as it started. The protesters didnt think it was necessary, though. They said they had no intention of destroying any property. I am tired of our children dying and the fact that no one seems to care. Black lives matter and until people start realizing that we matter, too. And that them killing us all is not acceptable, there is no indictments, not fair. We want justice. People on the way home from work stoppened to sidewalks to watch. The protesters who we are told are still marching also said they were frustrated with the media for focusing on the violence tonight of the baltimore protests. They said the focus should stay on finding out why freddie gray was killed. Well, after one more nice day tomorrow the weather could get wet on thursday. We have more on our yellow alert. Find new roads at your local chevy dealer. There is a curious case being considered tonight in front of d. C. Superior court. When we say it is in front of the court we mean that literally. It is the case of the mysterious meters. This meter, these meter can control. That tourist isnt the only one confused because there is only one meter here for every six spaces. In the 400 block of indiana avenue northwest. You look at the sign back in parking and you look right. No sign there. And you look left. No sign there. I cant understand. Reporter but it is not just tourists who are stumped. Locals are, too. It was a sunday afternoon. Michael hurst and his girlfriend Debbie Arroyo came downtown to tour the museum. We should be in the clear, right . Reporter they returned to find a 30dollar ticket on the car for disobeying official sign. Arroyo sent a request for reconsideration. But they contingent rejected her appeal. You would have to take a tour in front of the courthouse to consider this a legal parking spot. Ah, it says you can park here. And here, more parking meters. Tonight, an intense night after police in baltimore were forced to move in on a group of protesters who decided not to obey the 10 00 p. M. City wide curfew. Garrett haake is there live right now. Garrett the situation got so dangerous you and your crew had to move away from the situation where there were protesters and police clashing together. Reporter yeah, jen, is that right. We moved five or six blocks down from the main confrontation when we reported you to a few minutes ago. We have been able to move back now as things have calmed down a little bit. I want to give you a look. Were now about two blocks south of where the initial confrontation between protesters and police occurred and as you can see, police have that intersection and the next intersection closer to us, completely locked down and under their control. You have riot police with their shields both Lowell Police and state troopers displayed out here. We have not seen the National Guard since earlier this evening. I dont know if they have been part of this effort to push people back out of this intersection. But they have if not made arrests or if not stopped the protests, they have completely scattered them from the area which was Something Like a block party for most of the evening tonight. And now, back almost entirely under police control, we do still hear the helicopters overhead and we have seen some Police Vehicles continuing to crisscross the side streets looking for people. But as we are now back much closer to the main event here, if you will, were not seeing those protesters and other folks out on the street. Mostly just reporters and the streets at least in this area have quieted down significantly from really just 20 or 30 minutes ago when it was imper active for us to get out of there imperative for us to get out of there to not have to breathe the gas that was being sprayed to dispurse these folks.
