Approaching storm system that will bring us showers and then much colder air arrives. Good evening. Im jan jeffcoat. And im debra alfarone. Eloquent, unwavering is how many will remember former three term new york governor mario cuomo who died at age 82 tonight. Reporter he was new yorks liberal lion, the states longest serving democratic governor in modern history, but mario cuomo came from humble beginnings, the son of poor italian immigrants. He had hopes of a baseball career but gave it up after one season in the minor leagues. He headed instead to st. Johns law school where he graduated at the top of his class. He and his wife matilda had five children before he launched his political career losing to ed koch in new yorks 1997 mayoral primary. And i will faithfully perform the duties of office. Reporter he was elected governor in 1983 and served three terms balancing 12 consecutive budgets and leading new york through two recessions. Cuomo emerged on the National Stage in 1984 at the Democratic Convention in San Francisco delivering the keynote address. He highlighted the failures of the reagan presidency. There is despair, mr. Ive surely made mistakes as governor, but im as proud as i can be of what we have accomplished together. Reporter he agonized for years over whether to run for president , a hesitation that led to the nickname ham licked on the hudson. He said he opted out because he never believed he was the most qualified candidate. After leaving the Governors Mansion cuomo headed into private practice, but 16 years later he was back in albany to see his son andrew sworn in as governor. He looked frail at the 2014 election and days later entered the hospital with a heart condition but first he celebrated his sons reelection where the younger cuomo declared him the father of the modern democratic party. Marley hall, cbs news, new york. Tonight president obama offered his condolences and called cuomo an unflinching voice for tolerance, fairness and opportunity. You dont think she should pull up the carpet right to use an old phrase . No. Were Ebony Rose Thompson helped reporter Ebony Rose Thompson helped draft mayor grays School Boundaries plan, boundaries which havent changed in decades. Those boundaries are older than i am, so i think it should be visited five years, maybe 10 years from now. Reporter thompson served on bowsers Transition Committee and helps the new mayor make minor tweaks to the boundary plan, yet tomorrow wont be for that. It will be forebearser to reflect for bowser to reflect, take the oath and party. Bowser is aware voters have High Expectations of her administration. They want to have a government that is efficient, honest and ethical and that delivers for them. In arlington the county council decided to ditch that plan altogether. So now what . Thats what we are asking mola lenghi and thats what hes asking tonight. We find him on columbia pike in arlington where that streetcar route was planned. Reporter you asked it, now what . What is plan b . That is the question for Arlington County. The columbia streetcar project was scrapped, but there is still an obvious need here. Arlington streetcars were recently derailed. The project might be gone, but the demand for new transportation is still here. Right now the burden is on the opponents to provide plan b, to show us how we can significantly expand transit in the corridor and make it work. The biggest problem was cost. Reporter opponents like bob dunfy say bus Rapid Transit brt is the way forward. Its to return to a superior level of bus service that we havent really seen in this era. Its faster, more reliable and it will deliver really all of the same services that streetcar would have done and meet the needs of the cars. Reporter dunnfy says brt would be efficient by doing away with fare cars or on bus payments. Customers would utilize off bus fare payments. To avoid traffic delays and frequent stopping bus drivers could safely override traffic lights and current bus stops would be consolidated. The virginia d. O. T. Refused to convert an existing columbia pike traffic lane into a dedicated transit lane made just for buses. Without a dedicated lane you cant do bus Rapid Transit. So what do we do without a bus dedicated lane to move people through the corridor . Reporter what do you do . Thats why i think the option of the streetcar might come back. It was about a different way to grow. Its transit and transit oriented communities. Reporter while schwartz says its about smart growth, dunnfy says its about a smart ride. It turns out it moves about the same speed as a bus and functions about the same speed as a bus, so it might as well be a bus. Reporter obviously the project has been scrapped, but in speaking to some Arlington County Council Members who oppose project, they do admit that it might one day get new life. Live in Arlington County im mola lenghi for wusa9. The sun we have saw today is not going to be sticking around. Clouds are moving in and so is the rain just in time for the weekend, erica. Thats right. But then behind that rain will come much colder temperatures. Right now its 40 degrees in Downtown Washington which is not that bad. You see some 20s on the map up into the great lakes region, but as we head out west, look at these temperatures. Its 16 now in salt lake city, phoenix 41, only 50 in l. A. , 10 in boise now, albuquerque 18 degrees, some of that colder air going to advance toward us heading into next workweek, but before then a storm system that is kind of hard to see right now because the map is showing a stark contrast in temperatures during the day, but then as we head into the evening, that contrast kind of diminishes a little bit, but this is where our next area of low pressure is making its way toward from. Its the southern stream storm. That will head toward us as we head into the weekend. So that rain moves in and it will just be rain in the immediate metro, but icy spots are likely in the mountains. As we head through the rest of the weekend, the rain continues, so unfortunately not the best weather to be outside this weekend. Well track the approaching rain with 9 futurecast and also look at that arctic blast on the way in the first alert sevenday, back to you. The flu is getting a pass start on 2015. Oh, actually we have 9 futurecast. We dont want to skip righto that. Temperatures now are very variable depending on what part of the metro area you live in. Were at about 40 degrees downtown in d. C. , but here we go with the michael and son weather cam looking at Reagan National airport, 40 degrees downtown in d. C. , but some spots have already dipped into the 20s, not just the 30s, but the 20s. We just have a light breeze out of the southwest now at 6 miles per hour. In our weather headlines, a few clouds. Were still dry overnight tonight and seasonably cold tonight, seasonably chilly tomorrow, still looking at a dry day, less sunshine, though. That cloud cover is going to increase during the day on friday. The rain doesnt arrive in the metro until saturday, though. Youll see it on 9 futurecast. More showers will arrive on sunday and sunday is the mildest day in our first alert sevenday. As you can see here on satellite and radar plenty of cloud cover arriving and it will take a while before that shower activity fully moves into the metro area. On 9 futurecast this is tomorrow at noon still looking at spotty cloud cover and temperatures popped into the 40s for just about everybody. Tomorrow will be a little bit milder than average, but the leading edge of rain moves two us before sunrise saturday, plenty of clouds in place, but showers have started to move toward the metro. Most of the rain doesnt arrive until around 9, though. You can see those scattered showers pushing through right around the lunchtime hour on saturday. I want you also to notice theres some pink showing up in the mountains every once in a while. Temperatures will be at or below freezing in the mountains as that initial rainfall arrives. That means we could see freezing rain in the mountains but not in the immediate metro area. The cold front arrives as we head into sunday, maybe a rumble of thunder. Overnight becoming partly cloudy, 22 to 30 for your overnight lows. So it will be seasonably cold tomorrow and in morning still in the 20s and 30s with partly cloudy skies, High Temperature between 45 and 50, west winds 5 to 10 miles per hour, so not looking at that wind chill like during the day thursday. The entire lead up to this has been a lot of fun and the finish couldnt have worked out any better for us as a team and me personally. In the past if we have a two goal lead and we lose it, sometime we would wilt and i didnt see any of that. I didnt feel any lack of confidence from anyone on the team and i thought we were the better team today and we does everybodied the two points. The n we deserved the two points. The nfl playoffs begins this weekend starting in the steel city for the ravens against their hated rival. The ravens and steelers have met three times in the post season, all the heinz field all won by pittsburgh. The ravens want to change that.
