Severe storms rumbled across a wide portion of our area this evening and now some scattered showers will linger through the overnight hours. First alert meteorologist erica grow has the latest on our yellow alert. It got very active in the Late Afternoon and early evening hours. The thunderstorm started out along i81 and continued to hold together as they moved through the metro area. This is a threehour loop of Doppler Radar 9000 when the warnings were allowed to expire. We still had strong storms through most of the overnight hours and now this is the last of it in our area down into extreme Southern Maryland and calvert counties. We are definitely seeing things settle down. We will see a calmer day tomorrow, but the thing not going away is the heat. Tonight we got up to 96 degrees. Its tied for the third hottest day so far this year. Our record high 100 degrees. We got pretty close to that, but we didnt quite get there. As you wake up tomorrow morning, some patchy fog and its just going to be soupy and i hate to use the word miserable, but with temperatures in the 70s and dew points in the 70s tomorrow morning, it is going to feel nasty out there. Ill talk about how long this heatwave is going to last and when the next chance for thunderstorms will arrive coming up in the first alert sevenday forecast. A hiker has died after becoming trapped on the rocks along the Potomac River. His companion made the 911 call to Montgomery County fire and rescue just after 4 30 today. The 25yearold male victim was stuck under a large rock on Offutt Island just south of old anglers inn. Its also near the billy goat trail, an area frequented by experienced hikers. Rescue workers were initially told the hiker was badly injured, so they needed to gather special rescue equipment and the threat of impending Severe Weather made reaching that man even more difficult. We need some heavy equipment, air bags, chisels, jackhammers. We were able to get our technical rescue folks and the gear on the scene. About that time we had to seek shelter because of the storm. We kept eight rescue personnel on the island, medics and other rescue folks while others sought shelter, waited for the storm to pass. Some point in that period of time is when the victim passed and succombed to his injuries. The hikers identity has not been released yet. Investigators are still trying to determine how the man became trapped in the first place. A devastating accident this weekend involving three Montgomery County teenagers has turned deadly. 15yearold Shawn Gangloff died today because of his injuries. The Sherwood High School student was ejected from the convertible in which he was a back seat passenger early yesterday morning in olney. We have Team Coverage tonight beginning with Stephanie Ramirez who has the latest on the investigation. Reporter it was just one hour and 23 minutes into the Labor Day Holiday weekend. Montgomery county Police Responded to a crash involving two 17yearolds, a 15year olds and a tree early yesterday. That tree is now a memorial site and online places like twitter are flooding with messages of prayers after family and friends of 15year old Shawn Gangloff learned today the teen succombed to his injuries in that crash. Not talking about this specific collision, but in general younger people have fewer chances to become better drivers. Reporter which is why Montgomery CountyPolice Captain paul starks says police work so hard to educate teens on the danger of taking the wheel. He tells us the three teens were driving west on hines road in olney early saturday when the convertible went off the roadway and struck a tree, light pole and telephone box before rolling over and coming to a rest. Gangloff was ejected from the back seat. The two 17yearolds were trapped in front. Captain starks says theyre investigating several different factors into what could have caused this crash working with the Motor Vehicle demonstration to determine whether the 17 yearold driver identified as austin hall violated any provisional license laws. Investigators have an idea of the status but want to confirm it. S could come later, but now police are focused on completing this investigation. Classmates at Sherwood High School are now mourning the loss of Shawn Gangloff. Many of them gathered at an olney church tonight to remember the victim and pray for the survivors. He just had the most life and wherever he would go i just thought everyone should know, he would draw a smile on everyones faces. Reporter it is a sad day here in olney for many teenagers and students at sherwood high where 15yearold Shawn Gangloff attended class. Im very upset to be honest. Shawn was the type of kid that youd see in the hallways or anywhere else, at events and your face would light up. Hed brighten your day. Reporter as the rain moved in here tonight in olney, some of shawns classmates came here to the oakdale methodist church. We were not allowed into the regular sunday Night Service for High Schoolers at the church but were told many students came in with sherwood high jackets to protect against the rain. Back in the neighborhood where the crash occurred some parents were worried about the impact on their own teenagers. I made my kids get up, pulled them out of bed. The road was taped out. I made them look at it. I knew my son probably knew them. Didnt know who they were at the time. I still want him to see. Police are investigating a murder at an Anne Arundel County fast food restaurant. 47yearold luzviminda monreal of laurel was found in the stockroom of the Brooklyn Park popeyes by a manager. Michelle richie reports investigators are searching for her killer and a motive. Reporter crime scene tape around popeyes restaurant on richie low where a woman was found dead. She ritchie highway where a woman was found dead. She was a woman in her 40s found dead. Reporter those who live close by are shocked and frightened. I was going there today. Thats why i come up here. Reporter then when you saw the tape, what did you think was going on . I said somebody was probably killed in there. Reporter the womans body was found sunday morning around 8 00 by a manager in a back stockroom severely beaten. We have yet to determine whether this was a robbery or some other type of altercation that went bad and turned into this murder. Reporter the restaurant is closed for now as the investigation continues. Some say not knowing if this was a random or targeted murder is unnerving. I live down the road and wont come out of the house. Reporter police are looking at security cameras from around this area as well as inside the popeyes to see if it leads them to the victims killer. Police say the woman was working as late as 1 00 this morning. They want to hear from anyone who may know what happened. Labor day weekend at ocean city was rocked by a boat explosion. Residents of the Ocean Pines Community heard that blast just before 2 00 this afternoon. The vessel was on bosen drive in ocean pines harbor village. All five occupants of the boat got out and went to the hospital to be checked out. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. The coastguard suspended its search for a pilot whose small plane crashed off the virginia coast. Crews searched by boat and helicopter last night and early auday for the pilot. Thorities say he lost consciousness while flying from virginia. The plane eventually crashed some 50 miles southeast of chincoteague island. Earlier today the coastguard says it recovered a wheel and an engine part, but officials have little hope of finding anything else. A tragic report out of howard county, maryland this Holiday Weekend after a tree fell on and killed a man while he was grilling in his yard. It happened saturday in the 2800 block of daisy road in woodbine. Fire and rescue workers say three children who lived in the home received minor injuries. The fallen tree also damaged four vehicles and the familys home. Fire investigators say the tree appeared to be rotted. A local community is coming together to search for a missing gaithersburg man. 54yearold Martin John Rogers was last seen thursday when he left his home on riffleford court to go to work in rockville.
