The superintendent of Montgomery County schools is calling for tonight after he says several of his students sent him threatening and disturbing tweets. He responded to the messages with his own call to parents. Nikki has this message. The storm of tweets started with snowfall last week. Most tweets were funny. I got a will the of funny tweets and kids asking stuff. But snowballed to anything but. But some that were threatening towards me, slashed my tires. One person was threatening our family dog and her family and things that are disturbing. Here are a few of the tweets we can show you. Others not appropriate for tv. This associate media savvy superintendent saw the tweet says what else, a teaching moment. I always feel like the first thing you have do is have a conversation about it. And he did, through this letter to parents he shared, where else, on twitter. To address something he says his students need a lesson on, an Action School safety and Cyber Bullying expert, amanda, says was a smart one. I think its a great idea on how to talk to kids. If we teach them how to do it, we can teach them how to do it appropriately. Its not so technical afterall. A matter of cause and effect. I would like to hope that people wouldnt walk up to the superintendent and say horrible, awful, inappropriate things, but because of technology, i think people have this false sense of, it doesnt mean anything. The responses have been exactly what he hoped. Some parents, you know, e mailed me this morning and said we printed out the letter. And thats an analogy parents can understand. Thats a part of her day. So, i mean, the world is changing and thats a big part of her day now. What she does at the kitchen table, it should be the same online. In Montgomery County, wusa9. As for those students who sent the tweets, thats in the hands of the principal now. The superintendent received apology letters from several of those students. It was replaced by a leopard skin. Reporter, brenda wood from a sister station is in johanasburg. Candles are burning outside mandelas home. His president ial home where he died. Where mourners continue to gather so the atmosphere is anything but. Before you can even get to his house down the street, you have to walk past this. Mandela trinkets and tshirts turned this street of wealthy gated homes into a bit of a spectacle. But then just beyond, a lingering crush of people in front of a mountain of flowers. Spread like a carpet next to mandelas home. Despite this near festival atmosphere and the multitude of photo ops, many who come are still moved. We cannot thank Nelson Mandela enough for what hes done. It is just a miracle. Its a miracle to sacrifice enormously and i think she and her daughter remember the days before mandela. I was born just after the apartide system came into being in this country in 1949. I was born and it came in at 1948. And witnessed the whole thing and the terrible people in this country. The poverty, the lack of dignity. It was an insidious regime. So i say thank you, thank you, and thank you again for all youve done for our country. Youre tearing up. Yeah. Theres a steady flow of people of every race and creed, old and young who come. Bringing personal notes and small gifts of gratitude. While the grounds remain quiet, the memorial outside grows ever deeper. The trail of melted candles, ever wider. At some point, all this will end. The streets will open again and life will return to normal. But not now. No one is quite ready to let go. Im brenda wood in south africa. Derek mcginty has been reporting all week long. They are calling the snowstorm, they had the strongest one since 1953. Blizzards had a widespread impact across the middle east affecting syria, jordan, thousands were left without power. Always watching, always tracking, wusa9s first alert weather. Help me put it in perspective, the snow is rare, right . It is very rare. Very normal for us to get dodged by a winter storm here in the d. C. Metro. We kind of get scraped a little bit. A few snow flakes falling earlier in the day. We did get that accumulation up in hagerstown, winchester, and points north and west of that and now were going to see clearing skies as we head into sunday. However, there are more weather issues to talk about. Well get to that in just a second. Well start off with the michael and cam. 39 degrees, doesnt get much more miserable than that. Chilly rain with the dew point of 35. Winds are out of the north, northwest at 9 miles per hour. They are going to get stronger as we head through the Morning Hours tomorrow. And our weather headlines, the big issue tomorrow morning, especially before sunrise, will be black ice on some of our area roadways, especially north and west of the beltway where the temperature is going to get below freezing. Any untreated surfaces are going to see that black ice accumulate north and west of the beltway and especially because some of the salt that was on the roadways might have washed away with this heavier rain fall that we had in the evening hours. During t day on sunday, its breezy and chilly. More sunshine entering the picture. Its a long, dry stretch that were about to enter. However, temperatures are going to stay colder than average until the middle of the workweek. Right now, were already at the freezing mark in frederic and martinsburg. Winchester at 32. Its 29 in hagerstown where you had that snow. 34 in gaithersburg. But still close to 40 degrees right now in Downtown Washington and not too far off in andrews. You can see that big sprawling area of High Pressure keeping things dry through the midwest, through the rocky mountains. Thats going to shove its way toward us. And as that area of High Pressure tries to push out the storm system, thats when well see that pressure grade i gradient tighten. But you can see that the rain and the snow have pushed off to the north. Now we are left with cloud cover. Even some of that cloud cover is going to clear during the overnight hours. So expect these last lingering rain and snow showers to move out, basically youre done in the beltway, but points north and east still have a little bit of rain holding on. It will turn breezy overnight. 25 to 33 with winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour. On sunday morning, 20s and 30s for your temperatures. Partly cloudy and breezy, at least its dry. Northwest winds at 10 to 15. In the afternoon, those winds pick up, mostly sunny skies, a high of 40 to 45. Doesnt sound terrible, but when you factor in the winds out of the northwest and gusting higher than that, its not going to be a pleasant day to be outside. Were in green alert mode because we dont have any real issues with the weather. Its going to be downright cold on monday. A High Temperature of 34. Barely getting above freezing on monday. Tuesday, a little milder with a high of 40 and partly cloudy skies. First alert sevenday forecast. Finally getting milder on thursday. A minute to go. 22 points for lehman. Oh, what a week its been for the Washington Redskins. After an embarrassing loss to kansas city sunday, dropping them 310. Rumors of Mike Shanahan getting fired proved false, but of course the big announcement was the benching of Robert Griffin iii. He wont even be active. So of course, starting tomorrow, all eyes will be on kirk cousins who will be starting under center. We saw him throughout the preseason, looked pretty good, but came in cold at the end of last weeks game and struggled as well. Despite the pressure. Cousins is looking forward to the opportunity. I think it is a great opportunity to show what im capable of. Football is a team game and im only as good as the guys around me.
