No doubt about that. 25 downtown. 21 in gaithersburg and mid 20s in hagerstown. So the radar looks like this. Notice how its beginning to fill in. The little doughnut. Heaviest snow will be south of town. But i think everybody will see at least a little bit of snow overnight. Lesser amounts up in frederick, higher amounts downtown and even higher amounts down to the south. Well zoom in a little bit. Well see snow in warrenton. The district is still dry. It happened this morning in the 3100block of mana road in falls church. Now were learning more about the two victims from the people who loved them. They were very well known whi i, and tonight the friends are speaking only to wusa9. Investigators try to figure out exactly what caused this deadly blaze. But as they look for those answers, loved ones of laura and Mary Ann Gardner are trying to make sense of all of this. I was on the way to get up this morning and i thought of texting her to say hi. Reporter through his wife acting as his interpreter, he recalls the moment he found out about the deadly fire. He had stopped by an office where they worked as a math professor to say hello, then he got the news. I saw an assistant there with a picture of her. A picture of laura and mary ann. And lauras son. And she told me she asked me if i knew what had happened. She said she died in a fire in her house. I was just devastated. Reporter 60yearold mary ann guarder were a student. They came to our wedding and they came to every different get together we have. Reporter at this point, theres still no explanation as to why this falls church house erupted into a ball of flame. Investigators have yet to say whether an explosion of any kind caused this. Meanwhile, their friends are left with heavy hearts mourning the loss of a mother and daughter who were considered to be like family to them. They should be remembered as people who cared about other people. They were beautiful from the inside out. Laura was an amazing professor, an amazing mentor. She supported everyone. And really would help every student as they needed it. Reporter as it turns out, both mother and daughter were huge animal lovers. Unfortunately, both of their dogs and 8 cats also died in the fire. Were in falls church, ken molestina, wusa9. New at 11 00, a house in washington concerned families they were in the search for a killer. The person who shot to death a friendly high schooler marcus jones. He was gunned down by leaving a birthday party. Tonight a plea from investigators. We have the feeling that someone knows who shot and killed this young man. We have yet to have the identity of that person. And were here to say tonight that we need people to call and give us anonymous information so we can solve this case. A call to Prince Georges County police can make all of the difference. Marcus is the fourth student in the county to be murdered this school year. Vice President Joe Biden led the white house on gun violence, now hes taking the show on the road. Mr. Biden is setting out on a campaign. His first off will be gun friendly virginia with a visit to richmond this friday. Joining him with be senator tim kaine. The American Military is about to undergo one of the biggest changes in the history. It is lifting the ban that keeps women from serving in combat. Reporter this was an explosion like that one that gave sergeant hunt her shrapnel wounds and burns. 130 American Military women have been killed and 800 injured in iraq and afghanistan. The new policy opens 200,000 jobs to women from which they are currently excluded. Physical standards will continue to apply and they have to carry a backpack that weighs 63 pounds. Sometimes it weighs 100 pounds. But manning says the decision is a recognition. If what you have done has been good, its helped the country, lets make it official. Lets open it all to you. They feel the Obama Administration misled americans about what happened. The fact is we had four dead americans. I understand. Was it because of a protest or because of guys out for a walk that they decided they would kill four americans. Republicans drilled clinton about request for more security before the attack. Clinton admitted those messages never crossed her desk. Did i find that you did not read the cables, i would have relieved you of your post. An independent review post found a series of that lead to security lapses at consulate. Governor clinton took responsibility what happened and she assured members of Congress Changes are being made to create a tronger department of state. Stronger department of state. A truce in the battle over the nations debt limit. They have passed a bill to let the government keep borrowing and ignore the current debt limit until may. But they tacked on a condition. Some startling new statistics about what they do to tonight we have even more motivation to stop smoking. They find womens risk of dying from lung cancer has gone up dramatically. Earlier women died maybe two or three times at higher rates from lung cancer. Now theyre dying at 25 times the rate of nonsmokers. Government researchers found women now have the same smoking patterns as men. Theyre starting earlier. Smoking more cigarettes. Another study finds a smokers Life Expectancy, man or women, is 10 years shorter than a nonsmoker. Here is encouraging news, if you quit before the age of 40, you can get almost all of those 10 years back. And even if you quit in your 50s, your 40s and 50s, you still get a substantial amount of that Life Expectancy back. Six years plus. One out of five americans smoke. Thats according to the cdc. Experts say cutting back is a step in the right direction. But until you totally quit, you cannot totally reduce your risk of lung cancer. Those nutrition labels on our food may be due for an upgrade. It turns out we may be consuming more calories than we think. The food and Drug Administration surveyed thousands of consumers and said they found it confusing, especially when it comes to serving and calories. So lets take a label that says 110 calories per serving but its half a muffin. A lot of people were missing that. The fda has proposals to simplify things. For example, calculating nutrition in snack size bag is one serving for the whole bag or using a twocolumn system. One with calories per serving, one for the total package. Theyre also considering a larger font size to make the calories standout. And speaking of food, is yours being stored at the right temperature. There are lot of stomach viruses going around. But those are also the hallmarks of food poisoning. Check the frig and make sure its 40 degrees or below. Bacteria on food can double every 20 minutes at unsafe temperatures. So our first day in the 20s, a little streak begins. And our low this morning at national was 15. Thats as cold as it has been since february 5th of 09. Dew points coming up a little bit. Still single digits. Relative humidity 46 . Indoor relative humidity about 15 . Here is a shot from chase in virginia. A little bit of snow. And it is flying. A little bit of a coating already on the car out there. And it does appear the bullseye will be a little south of town. So maybe an inch and a third downtown. Maybe two inches in la plata and maybe two and a half inches in fredericksburg. In this situation, the atmosphere is so cold that normally an inch of rain equals 10 inches of snow. 101 ratio. Its so cold, we think it could be as much as 181. Thats why were going 13. The best line, i think, of a ban setting up will be from leonardtown westward through fredericksburg. Well zoom in a little bit. Still nothing going on around leesburg and most of Fairfax County north of 66. And Montgomery County is still dry too. But i think as we go through the night, everything will fill in at least for a couple of hours. Again, not a big storm. Clippers are not big storms. So light snow ends early in the morning. The heaviest amounts will be south of town. No big problems. In fact, who needs sunglasses tomorrow . And light snow possible again late friday. This has a little more moisture with it. And you folks south of town, again, could be in a more favorable position to get more snow. 13 inches total and the winds not much of a factor. Tomorrow morning, well, light snow ends early. Were talking about 7 00, 8 00. Its gone. And then partly cloudy. Temperatures teens and 20s. Winds northwest 1015. And by afternoon, highs only 2630. Partly cloudy, breezy, cold. Think layers again. Winds northwest at 1015. Next three days, were looking at late snow and breezy and cold on saturday. Each day will struggle to get to 30. Next seven days, we break the streak on sunday. We continue to follow the breaking news out of the university of virginia at wise. Lets get to debora with a big twist in all of this. Debora. Reporter absolutely, anita. A sick and twisted hoax put the scare of their lives into hundreds of students at the university of v wise campus. It was virginia wise campus. It was put on lock downwith a report that a student down with a report that a student saw a man with a gun. This was a hoax. Right after the 911 call, the school was put on lockdown. At exactly 9 28 they said it was on lockdown. Told them to find a safe place. At 10 08 they put out a second email alert to students. Again, the lockdown continuing. And what happened then is Virginia State police, campus police, a whole bunch of other Law Enforcement agencies went building by building to do a search. While they were doing that, special agents interviewed the student who called 911, and that student confessed it was a hoax. At 10 57, that lockdown was lifted. And that seems to be the story, anita. You know, we have to say here debora to see such a Rapid Response issued to students to tell them to stay in lockdown, to go on campus building to building, it seems like an excellent response by the university. Lets be clear, the email that went out, those were real. Reporter the email went out first and then one again at 10 00. And both of them were saying that the campus was on lockdown. Do not leave your room. Lock your door. Stay put. And, you know, there was a very Quick Response certainly. By the time they found out it was a hoax, it was about an hour later and everything was lifted. So the emails did go out. It was a hoax. And no one was in any danger apparently. All right.
