In the state of ohio up until at least july of this year there is actually a law that says if youre wear that a crime is in the process of being committed you have an obligation to alert law enforce. Ment actually misdemeanor crime if you fail to do it. So you know generally mike the law doesnt impose duty for people to do things except under certain circumstances. Right . You have to pay your taxes. But it doesnt there is no duty to kind of report things and do things absent certain circumstances. For instance, if you are a lawyer, under the cannons of ethics, if one of your client says im going to rob a bank or im going to shoot except, you have an obligation to alert Law Enforcement under certain circumstances you dont n this instance by law in ohio, see, if he had said to her im going to go kill somebody, and conflicting reports about, that then she would have had an obligation to tell the police. So she could be charged with something . Technically could be charged. I spent years as prosecutor, and the first thing that you really want to do is exercise discretion. And im not so sure what charging this woman under anything under certain circumstances. Of course the guy killed himself. Did he. I was asking people yesterday, and so many people said yes. Ive been bing watching this. There is a teenage girl, she dice by suicide. She sends out these cassette tapes, before her death of course, and this box of cassetts arrives in the mail to each person, 13 different people. Thus the name of the show. Here is a quick peak. Settle in. Because im about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically why my livened dollars. And if you are listening to this tape, youre one of the reasons why. Dont believe anything you hear. Whatever hanna thought she saw, she lied it on those tapes because she is crazy drama queen who kill herself foray tension. Anna has secrets, miss baker. Secrets are what killed her. Maybe ill never know why you did what you did. You dont know the whole store. I what else do i need to know . Youre just like the rest of them. But im not. Everyone is just so nice until they drive to you kill yourself. Sooner or later im sure theyll come out. Man, heavy subject matter. It really is. Thats true. So tell us, your original thoughts when you saw . When first saw it, i thought that it is something that theyre about the g out there, when, in our generation, there is a lot of kids that are experiencing these things. And it is hard, you know, to go to your parents, and tell them in High School Hard for them to under stands, a big part of it is social media, which comes into play in this show. I was in high school not so long ago, only been a year, i have experienced some of the things seen in the show. Dill inch ate some of those things . You say you can relate to. This as High School Student and now in college at temple, what issues are you talking about . So ill try to do it without giving away too many spoilers. But there is, for a girl, on the show, hanna baker, the main girl who dice of suicide, one of the big things that she experiences is bullying from boys, and i know a lot of like the controversy surrounding this show is the fact that she is, you know, considered a very like pretty popular girl. And what people dont realize is that in high school, regardless of how pretty, how popular you are, youre still going to experience bullying. Have you experienced bullying . I have. Snuff. Yes. I actually switched high schools two times. Because of that . The first time it was because of bullying but i mean it is hard, if you put a lot of teenagers, hormonal teenagers in a school together, like youre bound to have have you ever known girls specially that want to harm themselves . I have. Ive had a few friends who have suffered from depression, one friend actually did try to die by suicide. It was very traumatic, and it was because she was being bullied. And she, you know, was gorgeous. I went to a private school for two years, so you think that some of those girls have it all. They dont . The big question, too, seems to be, bella, when people are watching it, is it realistic . For someone, you say you experienced this, you know friends going through some of these issues, do you feel then since youve been through it, that it is realistic . I do think it is realistic. I know like one of the main controversies that people are talking about is the fact that all of these Different Things you know like bullying rape, all like the different components that hanna is talking about, it is all happening to her, and it is happening to her within the span of one year, which that might be a little over dramatized. Yes. But let me make sure i understand the concept melissa of the show. She has died by suicide. But the audio recorded on cassetts, messages to people that have upset her and caused her to kill herself . Yes. The way i took that was we get the full picture of whats happening to someone who is experiencing depression and suicide at thoughts. Because i think the main charger hanna really embodies the average person with Mental Health issue, when she breaks the steriotype of what someone looks like when struggling with depression, often smiling, does have friends, is very prep. I makes jokes. Right. She can laugh. But at the end of the day she is struggling and we find out the struggle through those tapes. For some people though, because there has been a lot of articles written about this, a lot of people have opinions about this, and this topic, they say it kind of glamorize z it, because she has these tapes, she is kind of getting revenge in a way, like i want you to know what you did to me, how i felt when in reality it is not always that way. Yes, i think there is some harm in glamorizing sort of revenge suicide. So that my bullies will theyll regret what they did to me. And so that may put some ideas in some peoples head of this is how i can get my bullies back. However, the show did create obviously the whole country is talking about it so the show did create a conversation. Thats good. Oftentimes like with these types of issues, have been so stigmatize dollars we dont have these conversations. So i think the show brought things to light. The main thing i want to get out of the conversation is there are so many people going through depression, but they dont go seek treatment. What is it, say, ten people, only three of them will go get treatment. Thats correct. One out of four people will struggle with Mental Health disorder, so the fact three out every ten people will get treatment, including what this show, which this girl did not get the treatment she deserved it, does em bad i what actually happens in our country. Why do you think that is . Still a stigma . Oh, yes, youre not quite right . Definitely a sigma, often times in my barak at this i feel clients fell week if asking for help. Want to do it on their own. You cant do it on your own. You need help. So would you advise certain age group not to watch it . I dont know if i want to make that big after general irisation, i think if you are struggling with meant at Health Issues talk to a parent or prepare yourself to now this stuff can feel emotionally triggering for some people.
