Well, city officials are getting public involved in the issue of police body cameras. They are holding a hearing to let Residents Voice their concerns. Lauren johnson at city hall this morning, hi there lauren. Reporter hello there, this hearing coming two years after that department started using body camera. It will happen here, 1 00 p. M. Is the time room 400 is the place, there is to much muscle over with the topic of the body camera but there are challenges richard ross ace wear of that might make it a challenge to expand the program as it mayor hopes. Technology, lets talk about that. Expanding this would mean servicer would need to be ready to in take footage from thousands of officers every single day. Data plans, costs and the time it takes the officers to down load the footage, from their shift. And then is there issue of transparency fundamental to wearing these cameras. That was raise todd make it tough for public to obtain or even watch those police recordings, this is, of course , intended to hold officers to a higher standard by allowing the public to see footage between the officers and those that they encounter to remove any doubt over those interactions. Officers in the 22nd district currently using cameras and members of the Civil Affairs unit that started in 2015. Then last year mayor said i will spend three milliondollar, and buy 4,000 cameras by 20201. That hearing today to discuss. That can that feesably happen . This summer officers in the 24th, 25th district will get the technology. Then commissioner ross say they will send out questionnaires to the general public to see what they think bit. Fire fighters say it started around 8 00 friday night, the hoverboard apparently ignited while it it it was charging. Threeyear old girl ashanty hughes died saturday from injuries that she sustained in that fire. Hughes is youngest and first fatality linked to the hoverboard fire in the you had two others were critically injured and hospitalized. We have had first start of body cameras, on Police Officers two years ago why are we having this hearing now. What test results in. And we want to see if we will roll these cameras out in the entire city, worn to do two important thing. One, keep the public save and officers safe. When they are on, you are on your best behavior, sitting up stright straight in your best behavior and we hope that same effect happens when we have, these contact. We are talking about 22nd district here north philadelphia, two dozen officers outfitted with those body cameras. What have we learned from those outfitted. We have learned that crime is going down, people in instances of misconduct have it has had a positive effect this that regard. One officer, semi confidential ly said to me the one thing, the change is that people, he cannot let you go on stuff. When i was a kid you get caught riding around, might have ran a light, done something minor and that discretion is changed a bit because you know, that eye is watching. That is a good thing and bad thing because we want to keep people out of the system as much as possible. So, when you can have them on, what are the officers rights to privacy, that are witnesses that might have viewed the crime if a purpose traitor asked for that footage and then uses that to intimidate witnesses, these are things we have to consider and what we will consider today at those hearings. Yeah, marty was talking to a client, somebody was giving him a hard time not being responsive to questions and questioning what he was doing and he noticed it was my email signature and he said, you know, you are both sharing the same computer. It was a shared i am box, so we just swapped out signatures when we worked with our different clients. He asked is this normal. I said this happens all the time, dude. I said, i told him i said lets switch. Try being me and i want to be you and lets see how different it is. So martin, what was the response you got. Once everyone thought you were nicole, how was the reaction then for two weeks. It was very difficult. Not everyone but i would get a lot of people over explain things to me, basic terms that i very clearly understood. There was more dismissal of things, questions that i would normally ask very easily, people were giving me push back and questioning why i was asking these questions, even when i encountered difficult clients as a man, they werent always immediately dismissive, of what i was asking. This wasnt, this wasnt all across the board but it was, enough that it was notable. When you say enough notable how drastic are we talking of the difference then. It was slight changes, but just like i suddenly became, at my job and took me longer to establish trust with these clients and to establish rapport so we would have basic dialogue was a little bit more difficult so i noticed that in the time it would normally take me to be about halfway done with the project, i was really just establishing that i knew what i was talking about. Again, this wasnt everybody but it was a good chunk. It was more than my normal amount i would say. So while were you dealing with this nicole said you had one of the easiest weeks of your life. Yes. Martin was probably surprised but you are like i go through this all the time. Ways dealing with problem clients and lay the law down that i used his email signature before and got me better, response, so i was able to kind of kick bag and try to be, i was able to speak a little less professionally to these folks because i was than the constantly fighting to prove that. Immediate dismissal, just at the time there was a thousand reasons it could be and what might those be, only thing that changed with the gender is name on the email. We didnt change how he worked and my experience just vanished and made me realize that this guy just doesnt think that i know what im doing, with my own boss, couldnt do. Before we go, i have no as a manning through that experience who may have experienced or may not know what would you tell them about this, what women to have go through in the work place. Well, probably the biggest criticism i have gotten through this has been from women who are basically saying hi, lie another guy who suddenly discovered that sex ism and massage any exists right in front of his face and that is a valid criticism. It is not that i didnt believe it, just a difference between knowing something exist us and really experiencing it. So the best advice i can say is, when your female collogues or friend, tell you that just in general this is what it is like for me dont get defensive, and listen to them, and dont immediately respond with well, im not like that, ask yourself, like, intra speculatively am i like that .
