One every our great reporters here Chris Oconnell i had no idea he was going through this medical mystery because just staying on the job every night i never would have known. All started he woke one partial vision lost in one eye which led to month with very few answers from doctors. As a dad every twin girls, i couldnt imagine a day without seeing their smiling faces. As a tv journalist, i get to be the eyes of the world. But for me, the ability to witness that news to literally see things clearly, was about to change. I remember vividly. It started january 12th, when i woke up in the morning. I woke up with a sudden and painless loss of vision to my left eye. Within two days, i was sitting in the chair of Delaware County ophthalmologist, doctor john rafini. Little bit of blood get some information from you. And so it began. A battery of blood work. This is the easy part. Countless diagnostic tests. Enough pictures of my eyes to fill a family albumn. But six weeks have passed and what i didnt get was answers. Well, i figure, i would start documenting whats happening to me, since doctors in their own words say theyre baffles, of whats causing my vision lost. It was like a kick in the gut. When doctors told me my vision lost wasnt going to get any better. But i didnt expect it to get worse. It is where my Lifelong Medical journey would begin. Well, chris joins us now, from near his home. Chris, i had no idea, you are a trooper, man. Well, mike, i tell you, i didnt know what was going on, so i really didnt talk about it for quite some time, until i got the answers of what was causing my vision lost, which is im going to reveal tonight at 10 00 during our story, but a very serious medical condition, that a lot of people should see tonight. Because it affected me, and affected my family pretty profoundly. Now when you say vision lost, chris, does that mean you couldnt see at all or you had to wear a certain kind of glasses then . How are you functioning . We saw you were in the news room. Long story short, i was diagnosed with optic neuropathy. And i lost still to this day lost most of my vision in my left eye. I have the sensation of a vaseline over my eye. So it is very blurry, i can see shapes, i can see color, but not much after that. But really, that was a wakeup call for what is really going on with me. I was diagnosed after that with about eight weeks later they did find the reason of my vision lost, and frankly thats the least of my problems now. I am now a cardiac patient. I suffered an eye stroke back in january that now im being treated at Thomas Jefferson hospital as a cardiac patient. Now it is a preventive type of thing for me. So now, again, this, the eye, was a wakeup call. Yes . This, i can still deal with. This i can adapt to. What could have happened, i could be dead right now. For sure. A strike to the brain. So this was a wakeup call for me and ill plane that tonight our story at 10 00. Sound like it will be so for so many other. Stroke, think maybe youre not able to move your arms, legs, something going on with the brain. But in your eye . Exactly, alex, thats the biggest message i can tell people out there, sudden vision lost, is a 100 indicator that Something Else is going on, for me it was a stroke. It could be ms. It could be lyme disease t could be medication youre on, but the big message im trying to get out there is sudden vision lost, requires immediate medical attention, no matter what it is. Did you try to put it off for couple of days, oh, it will get better. I didnt know for eight weeks i didnt know what was causing it, mike, the worse part, i didnt know if the artwear iowas going to go. Right. For many of these things, not knowing is the worse part. Once i found the answer, which under found out a stroke, once i knew it was something i can prevent another time then it became working at it and going into preventive mode.
