Prison hostages drama continues to unfold at the vaughn correctional facility in smyrna. Inmates there have taken over the prison and holding two Correctional Officers, at this point, but yesterday it was up to five. Thats right. But the fact is as mike said going into our 20th hour of this going on, jenny joyce and steve keeley have been following the latest developments. We start with jenny right now. Jenny . Reporter good morning, the last update we got from officials was about four hours ago. So hopefully we will get another one soon. The last information we did receive is that there are still two prison employees, and 82 prisoners inside of building c held by inmate hostages have told local media theyre fighting for improved prison conditions. Corrections Officials Say theyve been working through the night, continuing negotiations, and hoping for a peaceful resolution. The hostage situation started around 10 30 yesterday morning. Officers received a call about a major disturbance inside of building c. Four employees, including three officers, and a counselor, were taken hostage. Two of those employees have since been released, and are okay. It is unclear who was leading the charge, how many inmates are involved in the takeover, and how many are victims themselves. Officials say they think the inmate are monitoring whats going on, outside of the prison walls right now. The inmates in this building do have access to television. So they may be watching this. What would you like to tell them if they are watching . We would like to resolve this peacefully. Audio recording, of a person who called the news journal yesterday claiming to be inside the prison, the person said he was told by his captors to call and report their demand, they claim inmates are oppressed and treated poorly. They want better Education Opportunities among other things. Prison officials, again, have been sending periodic news updates, and holding briefings, the last one received was about 2 00 this morning. I reached out to one of the officials, short time ago, i have not yet heard back as far as an update. Mike and alex. Ill be darn. Im surprised they havent cut off communication with the televisions, just cut off all of the television power. That way they wont be able to see waist going on . Whats going on. But apparently the people that live around the prison are concerned, that one of these people are more of them might get out. So theyre frightened and understand bridge so by the situation, so we bake up with steve, steve . This is not the tv market, the saulsbury market, dont have cable, so not listening to what were seeing, even while i lived down here the cable tv provided baltimore and washington, not philadelphia. A little more history. Thomas capano, name you probably all say hey that rings a bell, who is that guy . He was the once prominent delaware lawyer from a very prominent family who may be delaware ace most infamous murdered nerve recent times. He did his prison time here until he died in his prison cell. He was in solitary confinement. Why do i bring up him . Solitary one of the top complaint here. Federal government report put out two month ago about delawares prison system. Because it was talking about the entire nations prison system, but really highlighted delaware problems, because despite being one of the smallest states, it was close to the top in worse prison conditions. It was fifth worse in overcrowding and third highest percent of prisoners like cap and an in solitary confinement. Not just inmate pointed out these problems, so have family members of the 600 people most of them live close to or in smyrna who work here, all around the middle of the state, just north of dover. When this prison was around here, in the 80s, and i was doing stories in this prison, you are not going to believe this. This is where delawares death row is. When i got down here, alex, mike, i thought i was in a time machine. I moved from new jersey, for the first time in my life. They had people using outhouses here, and then when i went to this prison, they were still hanging people to death. If you were on death row, you had the option to be hung. They hung somebody when i worked here in the 80s, then when i started on good day in 96, they still were hanging people, the last guy hung in this country was in 1996 when we started this show. That gives you a idea about how this prison operates, that guy chose hanging over lethal injection, but it was the last hanging in this country. But that tells you how inch family thus place is, last time anybody was hung to death in this country right here. And it wasnt 50 years ago. It was when we started this show in 1996. Wow. A former Delaware County teacher is behind bars, accused of having sex with one of the student, police say, nina scott started her relationship with the then 16 year old, at the Village School for troubled girls in rosemont. And it just goes to show you that sometimes the vetting process has to be even more circumspect, so we know exactly the type of people that we have surrounding our children. Staffing levels, thats one of several complaints about the prison, there is an audio recording on delaware online of person who called the news journal yesterday, claiming to be inside of the prison, the person said he was told by his captors to call and report their demands, they claim inmate are oppressed and treated poorly. They want better Education Opportunities among other things, and apparently they do have some support. There is a protest planned in support of these prisoners happening today here at the prison at 10 00 this morning. They are using the hashtag bond rebellion to spread their message. Jenny who would those people be at the protest, people that live in the area, loved ones of people who are incarcerated . Presumably. And, perhaps, maybe even family members of some of the Prison Guards who work inside the facility. I know chris oconnell, talk to family members last night who said, yes, this facility definitely under staffed. I also, i did check the invite littles, and the attendees who claim that they were going to attend the event today, liver in chicago, who knows whether or not all of those people plan to be here today. But they are trying to spread the words. Okay, thank you. Ryan in the control room just said he had a skyfox, are we over this prison . Is that where we are . Getting better look at it now. You can see some activity outside. Moving around there. And yesterday, we were being looking at this, i mean, there were several, several officers outside, i mean, look to be about 50, 60. Yes. Big police presence. And as we mentioned, as jenny was talking about, one of the demands being made by the hostage takers, they want better conditions. Yes. Could staffing at the prison be a part of this bigger problem . Thats what they say is one of the problems. Oh, as we zoom in little bit, looks like there is people lying on the ground there, yes, those are people. Look like people with hands behind their back, at this point we know about 82 inmate are still in this correctional facility. And two officers are being held hostage, you can see, theyre banking in one right now. Yes, theyre going in. Going in. So we have to see if we get any updates, maybe jenny since she is in the area there, steve will get us some. Now yes, they are all laying on the ground with their hands behind their back. At one point they were saying maybe even some of the prisoners were being head hostage by these four guys that then got reduced to two. You mean the four people being held hostage, the staffers . Yes. Because you make a good point, mike. We dont know whats happening inside. This could be just a few of the inmates making decisions doing all of this, and there may be other inmate who had no idea just brought in. But looks like theyre bringing more out right now, putting them on the grounds there. In handcuffs. Maybe some of the 82 that we know are still in the prison here . Wow. This is unbelievable scene. And i know it really is. I know for you older folks out there like myself this bridges back 1971, in a much milder case, of atica where 43 people were killed when the governor Nelson Rockefeller Said State Police just go in and take care of the situation. And a lot of people died. Right. It was ten staffers, Correctional Officers, and then 33 inmate that were killed. Yes. All right, this looks much calmer than that, certainly. A two year olds death has her parent facing charges. The berks county girl died of pneumonia two months ago, state police were called to the home of grace and Jonathan Foster found girl dead on the couch. They said their daughter ella grace had rough night and was breathing rapidly. The can you ill part of the none denomination Tabernacle Church they told police their religion pro events them from getting medical help. Both parent indicated they did not believe in medications, or doctors, and the death of the victim was gods will. The d. A. Says the doctor performed the autopsy, says ella grace had 95 chance of better survival, had she been given antibiotics. The couple is freon unsecured bail. Caring for their other six children, but being closely monitored, in the next hour, we take closer look at the beliefs of that church why they dont believe in medical intervention, because yes, our friend Althea Butler coming in who studies religion, because i want to know more about what that religion believes. The thing is, we know that, you know, the inmates have done this situation, but dont know how many people actually are involved with this, and how many just happen to be there, then taken into the situation. Some of the inmate not may not want to be part of the protest, and i dont know if were looking at those, or are they getting this thing resolved . We have two reporters on the scene.
