You are a trained child adolescent psycho therapist. So you deal with kids. You, yourself, were a foster child. Right. You dealt with peer pressure and perhaps didnt have that kind of parental oversight. When you look at this video what is dynamic you are seeing here, sit peer pressure. Foster car or not there is no amount of money or earned popularity that would lead me to, you know, set myself on fire. I mean imagine back in the day parents used to say all of the kids are jumping off the bridge, would you jump off the bridge. You may say no, im not going to do that it is a dumb thing. Nowadays a kid might retort mom and dad if i get more clicks, more views, more followers, more friends maybe i will jump off the bridge. The that is climate in which we live where some young people are willing to do almost anything to get attention and this is just another indication of that. How do you fight that temptation to get attention in this age group. Well, what you do is at home it starts at home, imagine that and they have to give them the proper attention and the love that they need, guidance and nurturing that they need. In many instances they are not getting these things in the home. They are not getting these things from the family or beyond that you mentioned spend time in foster care. You may have kids acting out because they are dealing with very terrible things happening in their home and they cannot articulate it. Believe it or not they may engage in this kind of stupid and dangerous behavior in order to get that kind of attention but we have to teach them use their words, not fire, right. You can talk about these things that are bothering you because setting yourself on fire is a dumb thing. There is no other way to say it. So you are an adolescent psycho therapist, what is going on in the adolescent brain that we hopefully grow out of once we hit our 20s or beyond. You hit on a key point. That is the brain is not fully developed. Were talking about in this instance the frontal lobe where you have things like emotion regulation and feelings, and where you learn how to walk away from things that may be dangerous instead of walking towards them which does happen. When you wrap all that together with this new social media climate where kids will do anything to get attention to get clips, likes, views, then you have a recipe for disaster. As a parent what are some of the red flags we might see in our kids, do we watch what they are posting on line what can we do as parents. First thing is limit how much time your kids spends on media, social media, video games because Research Shows it can do harmful things that can lead to depression, lead to them acting out in school and lead to them losing sleep. We have to monitoring amount of exposure kids to have social media and limit the amount of time to about an hour a day and you should be there to watch it. Beyond that ask your kid what kind of social media sites do you belong to and parents can do something as simple as google, to see what some of the dangerous trend are. So for example if your son shows up with three bottles of nail polish remover then maybe he is participating in it ising himself on fire and posting it on social media and then as a parent you can interveney remember growing up as a kid there was one troubled kid who my parents said after a short period of time we dont want to you hang out with this kid. They only had a small group of kids to look out for. Now, it is the the whole world you have to be concerned about when it comes to is what going on, on line. It is a real headache for parents these days, much more for us then what our parents had to deal with it seems. I agree and the headache may not be somebody down the block or around the corner but it could be a social media act, today social media apps can be very dangerous to children and youth and parent need to be aware of that reality.
