The others were taken by ambulance to the Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center in ac or air lived to cooper hospital in camden with serious injuries. This vehicle occupied six passengers. A 1a so critically ill she was placed at the very top of the transplant waiting list. She was just a toddler the first she received a donor heart. Doctors thought that would last five to 10 years. Its been 22. It lasted me all throughout school. Through high school. Everything. It just gave me second chan at life. And now im lucky enough to get third. This time around kayla doesnt need a new heart she needs a kidney, too. But already it feels like a door is opening. Not only finally getting out of this bed but finally starting my life. I know she has purpose or she wouldnt be given this chance. And im not going to lie, every night i cry. Today more tears. I love you. As her family and boyfriend head out to begin their wait, she is headed to the operating room. Cardiothoracic surgeon dr. Jeffrey miller who knows kayla and has operated on her heart once before will be her surgeon again and he is bracing for a long night. Shes had three open heart surgeries so this will be her fourth. So getting in, getting back into this chest will be a challenge. But weve done it before and i think it will go just fine. Its dark by the time the donor heart finally arrives. Given anonymously by another family in another hospital letting go of hope. My biggest thing is for the donor right now actually. I have no words. I dont even think thank you is enough. In the or shes placed on a heart lung bypass allowing the team to removed her stiffened heart an taj the new one. There is a risk of bleeding or that her new heart may not work. But she pulls through and this is just the beginning. Kayla keeps me going. Shes my hero. Shes my strongest shes my strongest after a few hours of rest round two. The kidney transplant. Kaylas new kidney is also from her heart donor. Her kidneys were damaged by years of taking anti rejection drugs so she needs this to start feeling better. Doing great. Three days later in cardia cardiackism cu better feels far off. Kayla is in pain and has a sore throat for being intubated. She does think everyone else out there in her voice is kind of small right now. When shes stronger kayla monteal hopes to one day say her own thank you to the family whos gift gave her this chance.
