Time. We are learning much more tonight from authorities. We now know the identity of the shooter. Police say he is 25yearold Nicholas Glenn a career criminal with at least 16 priors. We are also learning that police say glenn shot at philadelphia sergeant sylvia young 18 times at close range spiking her eight times as she sat in her patrol car. He struck her Police Issued gun and she could not return fire. During the ensuing foot chase with police glenn shot four bystanders, killing one of them. He was shot dead in gun fight with police after wounding a university of pennsylvania officer. He had three empty magazine clips and 15 live rounds on him when he was killed showing that he was heavily armed and in his pocket was a note expressing hatred of police. Authorities searched his last of last known address so far that letter is the only clue to his motive. It does not appear according to police that glenn was radicalized in any way or that he had any accomplices. A short time we were briefed by commissioner richard ross about the letter and the violence. The envelope was actually entitled, doomed and he was referring to i guess anybody who was going to be in his path. Other than the rantings he had in that letter, we dont know again washes was motivate the by. We unfortunately may never know in this case. We just hopeful that everyone else survives their wounds. This horrific night. Im not just talking about the physical part of it but the psychological aspect of it too. This is the United States of america. This should not happen in this country. Its just the bottom line, you know, and this is not an indictment of anything i dont get political. Im just saying this is a country where we have to do better with gun violence. Reporter police are calling this a bizarre and chaotic event. It started as an ambush on Police Officers and again it turned into a violent shooting spree. We go now to a timeline of events to lay out exactly what happened when. Barely anywhere to step around the bright yellow evidence markers charting the deadly violence that began with the ambush of a Philadelphia Police sergeant as she sat in her patrol car friday night. The markers make shift timeline laying out the spree of shootings that wounded two officers killing an innocent bystander and injuring three more. 11 19 at 52nd and samson 48yearold sergeant sylvia young gunshots. Seconds later she realizes she is the intended target as bullets shatter her cruiser window and strike her eight times. She is wounded but survives thanks to her bullet proof vest. You got an individual who is walking right up on a police car unprovoked and just starts firing multiple rounds into the car. It is absolutely amazing that she is here. Reporter other officers hearing the shots chase the suspect on foot down sansom street where he opens fire on a bar through an open door. Security guard is shot in the leg. The gunman grabs a woman leaving the bar and uses her as a human shield against approaching police. He shoots her in the leg and continues running to 49th and samson where he randomly takes aim at a nearby car. Striking the man and woman inside. Law enforcement converge on the area, the suspect then heads to 48th street where he is cornered in an alley between sansom and walnut. Gun battle erupts between officers and the suspect leaving u penn officer 56yearold eddie miller shot in the arm. 11 47. A half hour after the ran rampage began, the gunman is shot and killed. Shortly after, at a press conference, outside penn presbyterian where the victims were taken, commissioner richard ross announces the recovery of a notables believe contained an apparent motive for the violen violence. That letter that he has is bunch of ramblings which indicates his hatred for Police Officers and probation officers. Reporter by 2 00 oclock saturday morning, one of the innocent bystanders is pronounced dead. She was a 27yearold woman in the car. She had seven bullets in her body. Her fellow passenger is battling for his life. The officers survived. They are expected to be okay. Again, that 25yearold bystander is dead. Three others remaining here at press remember hospital all witnesses and bystanders. But we are told they will live along with the two officers who are now in stable condition. I have spent today here at the hospital talking to loved ones and they all tell me that they have been traumatized by this senseless series of violent events. Back to you. Im sure they have. That ambush n shooting spree, the gun battle, kind of like a movie scene or a police drama on tv except that this was very real and it played out right here on the streets of west philly. A picture beginning to emerge about the shooter identified as 25yearold Nicholas Glenn. Sources saying he had a long rap sheet with as many as 16 prior arrests. And according to a rambling note found in his pocket, he talked about his hatred for police. Glenn allegedly started the spree by shooting at veteran Police Officer sylvia young as she sat in her car. The gun violence continued over four blocks and when it was over, there were multiple injuries. One woman dead and glenn eventually was killed in a lengthy gun battle with police. In all, some 70 shots were fired in the entire event. People here in west philly upset about the gun violence and questioning the intentions and mental state of the shooter. I think he has some serious mental problems. He needed help. Somebody should have known that. Because you cant tell me he just came up with that plan just out of the blue. You mean to tell me nobody noticed his demeanor that he had these hate issues . Thats impossible. Its scary. Its scary. Its crazy. Authorities say the pipe bomb was inside a plastic garbage can when it exploded right at the time the runners would have been passing by it. The area near the boardwalk was immediately locked down. Those two Police Officers are recovering in the hospital as Police Continue to investigate. Meantime, two Police Officers in texas are recovering after they were attacked in fort worth. They were responding to a reported suicide call. When they arrived at the home they found one man shot in the head. The officers were told a witness was in the backyard. So they rent went around there when they opened a door to a shed bullets came flying out at them. Police fired back killing the person inside. One of the wounded officers is out of the hospital tonight. The other one is recovering in stable condition. Another Police Officer injured overnight this time elizabeth, new jersey. Police say they saw a car matching the description of one from a recent robbery. It was about midnight. The man though had handgun. He jumped into his car to speed away and thats when they say he struck one of the officers. Police fired their guns although no one was hit.
