Investigation and by federal law, transportation workers safety sensitive transportation workers are required by law to undergo post accident drug and alcohol testing. And and um, and that was conducted in accordance with the federal law. It does take time for that tox testing to come back. Now the second part of your question was there a dead man youve been listen toll ntsb talk about what theyve gotten so far. Theyve actually done a lot. Yes they have. Engineer has agreed to be interviewed by the ntsb in the next few days also interview some witnesses. They have good video up to the derailment and they have have been able to create a timeline for speed is still an issue. Very interesting. Also they said the brakes were working just fine as the train left 30th street station. Signals in the area working just fine. The tracks and the curve had no anomalies meaning they were just fine. Weve been listening to the nfsb. Good evening to you. Welcome to our 6 00 oclock news. Im lucy noland. Im iain page thanks for joining us. Well get up to speed knowledge death toll in this amtrak Train Derailment has risen to eight today. Police firefighters and cadaver dogs finding another body in that wreckage in Port Richmond. Authorities do believe they now have accounted for all 243 passengers and crew members on that train. Dozens of survivors remain in the hospital tonight. But doctors expect them all to pull through. Meanwhile, amtrak says limited Train Service between philadelphia and new york should begin on monday with full service by tuesday. Dave schratwieser is near the scene of the crash where the ntsb is right now holding that News Conference, dave. This new conference as you can see behind me still going on with the board member from the ntsb. They have have been hard at work on this investigation all day long. As they have the past two days. As you can tell from the News Conference he just talk about he went through a miriad of things theyve been looking at the track, no problems l the signals, no problems there. The brakes were working on the train as it left 30th street station. He also gave kind of a run down with 10, 152nd intervals on the speed of the train as it approached this curve where the speed limit was 50 Miles Per Hour. The speed was increasing according to the ntsb all the way to that curve and then the engineer induced braking began all the emergency braking began. But the train was traveling over 100 Miles Per Hour as it approached that curve. Its supposed to be 80 and then 50 in the curve. And thats when the train derailed. How do they know that . They know that because today they got their first look at the video from the train its hook to the data recorder. It is hook to the data recorder and that video showed them lot today. They got to see the lights on the rails as the train moved out of 30th street station all the way to the impact, and then it went blank. That will help investigators put this all back together. I know for a fact that investigators here in the city of philadelphia for the Police Department would like to see that video are hoping to see that video soon. We heard discussions about blood tests being taken from the engineer. We also heard them say that they have now an agreement to talk to the engineer at some point. We dont know when that will happen. It could happen in the next self days. Today the ntsb told us at a News Conference earlier they want to talk to him as soon as possible. They talk about speed earlier today as they did here today. They said that should not have been the speed. The question is, why was it the speed at that time . Was the train being operated manually . Was it in some kind of automatic mode coming out of 30th street station . They have not discussed that at this point. They are continuing to do tests. They are not saying when their on Site Investigation will be completed at this point. But, again you heard city officials today announced there was an eighth fatality. Still 43 people in the hospital. And that they believe they have now accounted for everyone who was on the train. 238 passengers, five crew members. They believe now they have accounted for everyone. They dont know about people getting on the last minute or anything like that. They know all of that and again two investigations going on here. The National Transportation safety board investigation and Philadelphia Police department looking at this along with the District Attorney office. Theres a cyst ant da watching this whole investigation as it unfolds. So this will go on for several more days. We do expect according to amtrak that the line will be open for some level of service on monday and full Service Expected sometime tuesday morning. Iain. Dave, thank you. Tonight we know federal investigators say this crash could have been prevented. They also just told us how the train couldnt to do pick up speed shortly before it hit the curve in Port Richmond. All eyes now on safety. Fox 29 weekend anchor Bill Anderson joins us from the newsroom. Bill, what are you hearing from amtrak. Reporter amtrak has been forth coming sharing all the information that they have as of this moment. Theyre talking about i policemenning safety protocols. But like so many of us i think theyre still waiting for more information so they can share it with us. We do know now that all of the 243 people on board amtrak train 188 have now been accounted for. While many are focused on mourning and healing others are looking to those Safety Measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future so i spent the morning hearing about those possible future safeguards. Reporter people continue to try to recover from the tragic amtrak derailment much of the discussion is now turning to what steps you have to take to make sure a tragedy like this never happens again. Positive train controls at automatically slows down trains is already scheduled to be installed but now some train experts and elected officials are discussing things like secured luggage racks and even revisiting mandatory seat belts for trains. A local attorney who has done hundreds of lawsuits involving railroads told me suit belt data varies but one pretty obvious safety measure is largely being overlook. If you had two engineers in the engineer compartment whatever happens you have the other engineer there or a conductor to make sure that the train doesnt for example speed into a 50 miles an hour curve. Reporter mr. Employers had a message for his colleagues who may be rushing to File Lawsuits before the full investigation is completed. And i would ask my fellow attorneys not to rush cases into litigation prematurely. Give your clients the chance to mourn and to heal and address themselves emotionally before you run into court. Reporter many people say seat belts on trains will cause more injuries as there are people who support them. But after tragedy like this we can expect the discussion and the search for Safety Solutions to continue. That reference that the the attorney myers he was talking about he mentioned the need to allow people to mourn. That was a reference to several attorneys that are being criticized for already advertising for clients to File Lawsuits. Hely told me the ntsb investigation could take as long as a year before theyre sharing their finding hopefully a lot of the discussions were having seat belts and other safety improvements will come long before that time.
