Little after 7 30 if this holds together moving toward the philadelphia area with very heavy rainfall gusty winds and lightning. Look at the numerous damage reports behind that system and you can see a lot of lightning as well over 2,000 lightning strikes. So when thunder roars, head indoors because you can be struck by lightning. 90 degrees right now feeling like 96 degrees. So now through 7 00 the activity impacts the pocono mountains and Lehigh Valley moving toward philadelphia between seven and 9 00 oclock and then down the shore as we move into the latter part of your evening. As we time everything out you can see by 7 00 oclock that activity moves toward philadelphia. And then continues to move down the shore with the gusty winds and heavy rain. Fox 29s drew dickman from ocean city tonight with how to stay safe. Obey the direction the ocean and beach patrol. Lifeguards say dont go in the water we are not going in the water. I was out there it would be scare row. Reporter parents and children are taking note as rip currents more powerful than usual are hitting the jersey shore. With the storm coming mark jamison with the Ocean City Beach patrol says the rip currents run further into the ocean making the more dangerous. When theres increased storm surge, theres increased chance of head injury. You might want to go out and ride waves in these shallow break but with the storm surge theyll break in Shallow Water and also going tough what we call flash rips where the water comes up and pulls you out with the storm surge. He says there are three general ways to spot a rip current. He says youll notice discolored water foaming again the grain of the ocean. You may also see a flat spot with a slick to oily look to it. A section of what looks like white foam is another sign the water is going out to sea. Youll find them a lot on beaches where theres jetties or pipes theres natural manmade structures that call hole. That water naturally exits out to that hole. If you go to beach theres not a jetty or spot it will create a depth side inside a sand bar and exit. Last sunday a current swept away a 14 year old boy swimming at the ninth street beach in ocean city. Authorities believe they found cory hammonds body this afternoon near the longport bridge. That tragedy is in the back of parents minds especially with the water being more dangerous than usual this weekend. Yeah, its pretty scary. 14 year old i have a 13 year old son an 10 year old. Happening now, parents on guard as police in Delaware County look for a man who tried to lure children. It happened in aston. Two girls say they were approached to go for a ride. Were live from glendale boulevard where police tell us this attempted luring took place and on this tree lined block i can tell you there are plenty of children playing outside and even a playground the one you see there behind me. The two girls ages 11 and 14 were playing when a man driving an older model gold four door sedan stopped and told them to get in his car offering them candy. I saw it on the aston website on facebook and we freak out. We go to that park all the time. Am worried about him. Im worried about what people are doing and what are the police doing about it . Report roar police say the girls ran home and recorded the incident reported the incident to police. As parents and grandparents, we need to advise our children that these are the situations they may come across, you know in the outside world, and you know, they need to be aware of them. But we need to educate them and teach them that these situations may come up and what to do in the event they do. Thats certainly right. Right now were showing signs of rotation through carbon and as well as Monroe County. You can see just around the jim thorp area also moving toward the palmerton vicinity you can see this particular cell right now has prompted a Tornado Warning until 6 30 for sections of carbon as well as monroe counties. So this is the particular cell showing some signs of rotation as we look at ultimate doppler. So if you are in Carbon County right now between jim thorp as well as palmerton area, seek shelter immediately because there is the potential that we can have a tornado. As we take look right now at some of the wind shear associated with that particular cell, you can see around the palmerton area right now, were looking at some weak rotation so there is indication by ultimate doppler that this could spin up a tornado right now once again this is around the palmerton area in sections of Carbon County. Tornado warning right now until 6 30 so seek shelter immediately as we continue to watch the atmosphere becoming a little more unstable across our area. So once again, heres hazelton. You can see very heavy rainfall right now moving into sections of the pocono mountains right now. Monroe county, a portion of that county also included in that Tornado Warning as we continue to find some rotation as indicated by ultimate doppler right now. So jim thorp area, palmerton, seek shelter immediately as we watch this cell and as we look at the sheer indications with radar just showing you how were having that rotation the velocity and impact that this does have the potential to produce a tornado. So once again a round the palmerton area. Also, the threat for hail. Take look at the hail tracker as we put this on. You can see toward sections of carbon as well as Monroe County the potential is there for some very large sized hail. Penny sized hail being reported in many locations across sections of the pocono mountai mountains. This nasty line that weve been talking about that continues to just kind of move toward the east. Very heavy rainfall, gusty winds and once again continuing to watch that rotation right now moving through sections of carbon and monroe counties. So what were looking at really is this shear, the sheer is indicative that there could be a spin up of a tornado at any given team root now moving through sections of carbon as well as mon Company Round tees. So continuing to watch that and continuing to watch that Severe Thunderstorm Warning for sections of the pocono mountains as well as that Tornado Warning. Right now showing you signs of rotation, that dark purple and pink color very very heavy rainfall and also the threat for some large hail. Well continue to follow this throughout the broadcast and also well continue to talk a little before the about what this system means for sections of the pocono mountains as well as arthur. What it means for the fourth of july. So well continue to stay with this as we watch the hail tracker showing you the potential for that hail. So the thunderstorms have been growing in the atmosphere very rapidly throughout the afternoon and evening. So the conditions are there. Its our third day with temperatures at or above 90 degrees. So it is official. That we have a heat wave on going across our area right now and also were looking at the threat for those severe thunderstorms popping across the region. So heres the line that were watching. Producing severe thunderstorms, Severe Thunderstorm Warning right now for sections of lancaster and Chester County. That is until 6 30. But we have that Tornado Warning for sections of the pocono mountains watching some rotation with that until 6 30 tonight. So if you are in Carbon County, seek shelter immediately as we continue to follow this system moving throughout the area. Well keep you posted but now back over to you. All right. Scott, just couple of questions about what youre talking about. First of all, tornado watches and Tornado Warnings. A lot of people at home, i know that in my household even, my kids dont know, which is it, i try to explain to them theres very big difference. So go ahead and break that down for us. Tornado watch lucy basically means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes but a Tornado Warning means that a tornado has been spotted or is actually occurring or the potential is there for a tornado and thats why that Tornado Warning has been prompted because ultimate doppler is indicating that there is a strong potential that there is a tornado through sections of Carbon County. Also, we have Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for lancaster and sections of Chester County and this particular cell is starting to show in signs of rotation as well some southern sections of lancaster as well as Chester County. Well continue to watch that, but currently Severe Thunderstorm Warnings posted for lancaster as well as chester counties. Until 6 30 and 6 45 respective respectively. But the immediate concern right now the pocono mountains as we continue to watch the potential for this hail moving out of this system through oaks sections of carbon and monroe counties and also watching this shear marker here showing weak signs of rotation. Its not moderate for strong, but it is showing you that there is the potential here that a tornado could drop out at any time moving through sections of carbon as well as monroe counties. So once again, until 6 30, we have that Tornado Warning for sections of Carbon County and also a portion here of Monroe County, and you can see between jim thorp as well as the palmerton area continuing to follow some very strong rotation as being detected by ultimate doppler. So seek shelter immediately if you are in the path of this storm as it continues to move on off to the north and east at about 20 to 35 miles per hour. So right now between jim thorp, palmerton area watching strong rotation. The potential is there for a tornado. So as we look again at the shear, looking at basically the spin in the atmosphere with this particular cell, you can see around the palmerton area, showing some weak signs of rotation with this and also moving toward the area of polk in sections of Monroe County. We also have that threat that that tornado could be moving in your general direction. So large hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall and also lightning. This line will be moving toward the philadelphia area as we move toward the 7 00, 7 30 too many frame. But once again, as i step out of the way, you can see were watching Tornado Warning for sections of Carbon County, that is until 6 30. And we have a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 6 30 for sections of lancaster and also chester counties. So these cells have been showing some signs of rotation across you are are a. Continuing to monitor the situation. Lets put a tracker on the activity thats moving out of sections of lancaster county. You can see if it holds together it will be approaching newark around 6 30. Moving toward the wilmington area as we move toward 6 52 by 7 34 moving toward the philadelphia area and this is had a history of some very heavy rainfall. The potential pour some hail with this system as well as it continues to move on off to the east at a pretty good clip. Take look at all of the damage reports so far out of this system. Off to the west, reports of trees down, power lines down with this system around washington, d. C. So just numerous reports of damage with this system. So this is basically an idea of whats headed our way. We have the ingredients with all of the heat, all of the humidity. So activity is really starting to bubble up across our area. So as we go back into sections of carbon and Monroe County, you continue to find that rotation that were watching root now. So ultimate doppler is showing you that theres a strong chance that tornado could be present with this particular cell thats moving out of sections of the pocono mountains, and into carbon and monroe counties. So seek shelter immediately as we continue to follow this situation. Ominous clouds right now across sections of the pocono mountains and as we continue to follow this activity very very heavy rainfall and gusty winds associated with this activity. So as we move into sections of the pocono mountains were watching this line showing you the signs of rotation and also were looking at a lot of shear. Weak sheer at that but still the potential is there that a tornado could form and be on the ground at any time out of this particular system. So were continuing to watch ultimate doppler with the shear. Were watching this nasty line of showers and thunderstorms that slowly but surely moving toward the philadelphia area even though its quiet for now, this is an idea and an indication of some of the storms that are headed in our direction as we continue over the neck several hours or so. Very steamy, very juicy and very unstable across our area as we watch this cold front move toward our area. The other concern is going to be dangerous lightning out of this system. You can see over 2,000 lightning strikes with this as we continue to follow the threat for Severe Weather across our area. Iain . All right. Scott, thanks for that. We just want to show you we do have camera jim thorp area you can see on your screen kind of left of all that radar. Now well take it full and you can see what scott has been talking about. You can see a little bit of rain on your screen there. This is the pocono mountains cam are in the jim thorp area. Scott has been talking about it. Thats the area were concerned about with potentially damaging hail. Scott has been talking about the signs of rotation and theres a Tornado Warning in those areas. Its the third day of 90degree heat. So weve got a heat wave going on all that humidity scott has been telling you means all those conditions are favorable for a potential tornado. Heres the thing. Scott you were talking about this, this system is out of the great lakes area. So this still doesnt have the fuel coming up off the Atlantic Coast and hurricane arthur which is about ready to go to cat two level at this point. So people need to realize, right, that these are defendant systems that were talking about and this system is not associated with arthur . Yeah. Thats right, lucy. Right now this system is associated with a cold front thats been moving out of the great lakes area. Its been picking up and tapping into some of the moisture as well. But take look right now as we move into sections of carbon and monroe counties. You can see just how impressive the thunderstorm cloud tops are with this system. Going into the atmosphere over 50, 60,000 feet. So the up drafts within that thunderstorm very powerful and that is sustaining the energy within the system producing some large hail. So the hail is growing as it bounces around win those very strong up drafts. Just look how tall this system is. And also, were getting some reports of just very very heavy rainfall. One to 2inches per hour out of this system. Moving out of sections of the pocono mountains right now. Once again this is carbon and monroe counties. You can just see how impress suv as i scan around with the cloud tops as well as the very very heavy rainfall indicative with these very strong up graft drafts across the arzo this is pin for rhett area also around the jim thorp area just watching out for the potential of that tornado as we put a couple of areas on here. You can see around the perr perryville area and then eventually moving toward polk and carbon and monroe counties, Chestnut Hill area and sections of mon company and carbon counties watching out for that potential tornado as we continue to follow ultimate doppler showing good signs there could be some rotation and there could be a tornado out of this particular system and cluster of showers and thunderstorms moving through the area right now. Lets go back to the warning and show you what were watching as far as the timing. You can see as we follow ultimate doppler, you can see that arrow, that yellow arrow is showing you that the atmosphere is turning and doppler is also showing signs of rotation with this as we move into sections of Monroe County. We have that Tornado Warning still in effect until 6 30. So you can see around jim thorp, moving toward polk, rotation with this activity toward sections of the pocono mountains right now. And the dark purple and pink shaded colors that you see showing you the intensity of the rainfall here. So were talking rainfall rates one to twenty fours per hour out of this system and also very vivid lightning as well as hail being reported with this system as well as it continues to impact sections of carbon as well as monroe counties much this system very volatile right now as we scott 90degree temperatures. Quick question about that. Because youre saying its to the west obviously our viewers in these western counties are right now feeling the impact of this and as it as it heads toward philadelphia prop and delaware and into the jersey area, will it pick up speed do you think or is it too hard to predict right now. Lucy the atmosphere is pretty primed right now. We have humidity thats high. The dew points who are. So the moisture is there. The sunshine will be the thing that could limit the severity as it approaches our area. Explain how that work. Basically the atmosphere heats up from the ground up. So once we lose that daytime heating, a lot of the up draft potential will not be as strong as it would be during the day late hours but we still have that front that will help provide some lift in the atmosphere and also we have a lot of moisture so a lot of the activity will likely continue on going similar to what happened last night because we had the humidity and heat that kind of helped sustain activity. We had a lot of lightning streak last night, too. Iain. Hundreds. There were there was even a man that was struck by lightning. Hit lie lightning. In voorhees all over the place. It was lit up and a lot of you know out there thats what happens. If you have a lot of heat and humidity during the day and you get those lightning strikes which we had a lot of them. Scott has been talking about that coming again today. Again third day in row of 90degree heat. Although conditions are very favorable and as lucy talked about and scott even went further on this is not a weather system that associated with hurricane arthur. This is kind of part of a cold front thats moving in from the midwest area. Its going to cool us off a little bit before we get that well have some Serious Problems with hail up in the poconos, heavy rain, a couple of inches scott talked about. Flooding potential. Flooding and obviously the potential also for tornado very high winds and maybe damaging hail. Youre looking at that right now. So this is a system that is going to be with us for sometime as scott talked about maybe 7 00 oclock or so in the philadelphia prop area but its moving at a pretty good clip and hes been tracking this and talking about this for the last couple of days. Now were right in the middle of it. In the thick of things. We never ever want to put you in a position where you are compromised. So this is a very dangerous storm and scott talk about theres Tornado Warning in that particular area until 6 3 6 30 o about eight minutes left to go in that Tornado Warning but you can see here that there are some serious signs of damaging hail up in that area up in the poconos right now. So odd to see the pink and the blue on the maps during the middle of july. We just start july and here were looking at this. Scott, you know, we were talking about arthur as it makes its approach up the coast up the Atlantic Coast obviously. Now when it ends up mixing with this system that is bringing all of these damaging winds, all of this rain, all of this hail and the Tornado Warnings, what happens and when do you think it will happen . Yeah, lucy, right now, as we look at hurricane arthur, you can see its battering sections of eastern North Carolina. That is thing is system that will impact our area. Right now were watching a cold front thats moving toward our area and out ahead of it its warm and unstable. So were getting really round one of the very heavy ran fall, the gusty winds and that Severe Weather threat and to our south were watching hurricane arthur as it continues to move up the eastern seaboard. So tornado watches and warnings posted for eastern sections of North Carolina and that system will continue to move just outside of our area staying offshore by two, 300 miles. So were not anticipating Tropical Storm force winds or Hurricane Force winds out of this system. The main impacts are going to be perhaps couple of those spiral bands pivoting back toward some of the shore points friday morning with some gusty winds and heavy rainfall but its going to be pulling away and were looking at improving conditions really lucy for the fourth of july. Pulling away if we can turn my mike on thank you and pulling away, because of the storm system thats walloping our area right now . Thats right. And were watching that cold front. The cold front is actually going to help kick arthur back out to sea during the day tomorrow. So its closest approach will be two, 300 miles to the shore. So lets fast forward even a little further, scott. Talk about tomorrow afternoon. We know what your forecast is for the weekend beautiful hard to imagine right now were in the middle of this. By friday afternoon you say things are going to be beautif beautiful. I think most fireworks plans and displace backyard barbeques will be okay as we move into tomorrow evening. But right now, of course, were looking at that Tornado Warning which continues by the way for carbon and monroe counties until 6 30 but lets take little sneak peek at that forecast. A lot of folks wondering in the philadelphia area where the weather is going to be like for the fourth of july. So were looking at morning showers in the morning by 7 00 oclock. Low 70s tomorrow temperatures will actually be pretty comfortable. By 5 00 oclock, clearing skies. Breezy, 79 degrees. And then by 10 00 oclock, were looking at temperatures in the low 70s and as we move down the shore for tomorrow, a lot of folks have plans. The water is going to be dangerous and the first part of the day a little lousy, store degrees by 7am and you can see lingering showers by lunch time but improving conditions as we move toward the afternoon time frame with this system. As we watch what happens with arthur tomorrow for the first part of the day across our area. Well of course continue to part of the day across our area. So as we look right now whats happening on ultimate doppler some of the rotation starting to fade. Move little farther to the east with that particular cell and as we look at the wind sheer showing you the signs of rotation being detected by ultimate doppler, where you see that blue shaded color right n now, moving out of carbon and into sections of Monroe County still showing weak signs of rotation with that system as it continues to race on off to the north and east. The other danger with this particular cell has been hail. Were looking at hail approac approaching 2inches in diameter so that can cause some damage to your vehicles. As we move into sections of the pocono mountains and as we go back and take a look at that shear, still showing a little bit of weak shear and rotation with this system. Very heavy rainfall. Gusty winds, and it looks like they have allowed for that Tornado Warning to expire and it continues Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 7 00 oclock and 7 15 for sections of the pocono mountains. So your holiday forecast, morning clouds and showers and rain from arthur but a beautiful weekend.
