Fox 29s dawn timmeney shows us emmas story through the eyes of her biggest fan her grandmother. So this was the day she was born. Quite a day. We were all excited she was the first grand baby. Reporter and what a beauty beauty. Emma daniels arriving into the world on january 9th 2009. Her porcelain skin, long dark eye lashes and a gorgeous head hair. Little angel. I can remember these days like they were yesterday. Theyre so precious to me. Reporter Cheryl Daniels is emmas very proud grandma. Her pictures are in every room of cheryls bordentown, new jersey home. They are some of her most prized possessions. Shes just very very special. Very special. It has changed my arrive forever. Changed me totally who i am as a person. Reporter changeed cheryl because the pictures and the memories stop at 2. 5 years old. Thats when emma died of a rare and devastating neurological disorder called krabbe disease. Children with krabbe lack a certain enzyme that the brain needs in order to work. Its extraordinarily painful. Imagine every nerve ending firing and being exposed. Thats what its like for these children. I cant tell you the horror this disease does to the children. Just horror. Emma seemed fine at first marking her milestones. But at a little over two months her parents ryan and Nicole Daniels noticed her health starting to deteriorate. She was cranky and crying. And visits to the pediatrician did not provide any answers. A five months the Daniels Family finally getting the crushing diagnosis. They said that its fatal and that she will die. Cheryl says because emma was not tested or diagnosed at birth, she was not a candidate for treatment. She says all the family could do was keep their little girl comfortable and watch her die. I said, how could this be . How can there ab test to diagnose these diseases, treatment that could potentially save their lives and its not being done . Reporter thats when she began working on maams law phoning anyone who would listen. I just was relentless about calling everybody to get this through. Assembly and the senate and it passed. Reporter maams law mandates expanded newborn screenings to include krabbe for every baby born in the state of new jersey. It passed in january of 2012. A month before emma passed away. I think knowing that you could have saved a child that you lost is absolutely the worst thing you can live with. Reporter dr. Amy waldman a neurologist at Childrens Hospital of philadelphia did not treat emma daniels but says newborn screening is instrumental. This is all abnormal brain. Reporter will help move science forward by identifying these children before its too late. Time is of the essence with these diseases, and unfortunately if you wait until a child starts to develop symptoms its almost impossible to get enough enzyme or cells to the brain in order to correct the problem. So this is a huge advancement. Reporter right now cord blood transplants and stem cell transplants are providing families with some hope but dr. Waldman says both come with risks and successes. I think the future for these diseases is how do we bet safe more effective transplant . And there are Different Things were working on in terms of trying to develop those strategies. I rocked her while the doctor pronounced her. Ill never forget that day. Emma is the real hero here so to respect and honor her arrive, i dont think that theres an option but to use this information and this knowledge to save another child and family from going through this monster of a disease. Right now cheryl says only seven states have legislation to test for krabbe and five other similar disorders. Of course, emmas flaw new jersey hannahs law in pennsylvania and aidens law in new york are among them but this grant mother says it shouldnt matter where you live and she wont rest until the other 43 states follow suit.
