Reporter in 2013, diamond williams was brutally murdered and left in a vacant lot in Strawberry Mansion. Since that time, the transgender womans body was left in the medical Examiners Office without a proper burial. Until recently a local monsignor heard about the case and was moved to act. I literally cried. I thought to myself, how does a family abandon a child . How does a society abandon a a human being . But more importantly, how does a church all the churches and i mean global church, how do we as a collective body of church read Something Like this and do nothing . Reporter monsignor james saint george read about diamond in the philadelphia daily news. Read that diamond had been abandoned by most. Likely because she was transgender and read that for two years no arrangements had been made. If this will help, you have a free grave at the cemetery and ill pay for everything. Ill pay for the opening. Ill pay for the grave vault. Ill do whatever i have to do. Reporter while speaking to monsignor jim about the decision to open their doors to diamond williams, we also discussed that a catholic parish leading the charge for a transgender woman could be controversial to some but monsignor jim, he was unphased. My kind of personal relationship with jesus is the opposite. I think if jesus were walking down the street and he saw diamond williams i think he would stop. Reporter chris a lot of people came together to try and make sure this could happen and diamond williams will be laid to rest saturday morning at saint miriam parish in flourtown. Local artists with disabilitdisabilities, theyre g heads using technology and tools they are surprising many in the art world in a major way. I got a close up look at the Incredible Program calling on at united Cerebral Palsy of philadelphia. Its giving people there a chance to unleash the artist win. Can you move back little bit . Yellow. Rye yell townsend is working on an impressive and colorful painting. How is that . Thats good. 26yearold has Cerebral Palsy and inter leck wal disability. But thats not stopping him from creating a powerful piece. The waves, the ocean and the trees. Rye nel is using artistic realization technologies or a at to swirl and spin the pant across the kansas. It gives people with physical hierarchal evers way to express themselves. He wears a head band with a laser damaged. He uses the laser by moving his head to show he a tracker exact wrl he wants the paint to go. Is it going the way you want . Yes. Thats cool. The individual chooses the colors. Yellow and red. How their mixed. The size of the paint brush. Yup. The canvass. Everything. Just a simple mod not of the head or a yes or no to the trackers questions and a pain painting is created one brush stroke at the time. I try to get in the zone of following the direction, the laser based on the techniques of art. I like the way i did it. It look really nice. And completely stay out of it. They just lead the way. Rye nel is one of about 20 people at united Cerebral Palsy of philadelphia who are part of the art program here. They get to paint once a week every tuesday they transcend their physical limitations and just let themselves go. I love it. I love how it feels. Its really my favorite thing to do. Its just been a hit from day one. The artists has control of this from start to finish. Yeah, theyre empowered. They get a chance to be creative and just kind of like their inner thoughts come out on canvass thcanits a beautiful t. None of the artists have had no formal instruction. No art theory. No nothing. Its all coming from win. Some of the people we work with you just feel the artist in them. Right here. It comes so natural what comes out is amazing. I like pinks, red, purples, green, yellow. Im creative. Artist that you see use the laser to paint mind blowing masterpieces, the man behind it all, princeton artist tim, is often close at hand. The reason i come so much because the potential here is gigantic. He came up with the technique more than 20 years ago after showing some of his artwork to people with severe dissables at rehab center. He was determined to find a way for them to paint. Even if they couldnt talk or hold a paint brush. Its saved up inside them. Its all in there and it has to come out. Theres a lot of power in pain painting. Billy feels that power. Art is liberating for him. Painting has changed his world. This is one of his framed finish pieces and, yes, billy and others have had plenty of offers to sell them works. It make me happy. People want to buy, people want to see it. They want to know how did i do it. How does that make you feel . Pretty good. Most beautiful thing theyre unguided. Ironically, tim started teaching this technology not too long after learning of his own disabling condition. He has a hereditary degeneration of the retin in a left him leg legally blind. His own sight has dimmed his vision for his students is bright. Everybody if they let loose can make great art if you just let themselves out and we dont interfere with them. We just give them the keys to the ferrari, and thats what comes out. Incredible. Art has close to 30 programs going on nationwide. Some of the work is so outstanding its garnered high prize from renowned art experts and being exhibited in major museums in new york galleries. Theres even been bidding wars over few of the pieces. The hope at ucp to expand this Inspiring Program to include children. Ucp is in the process of trying to raise the money to make that happen. The universal values that we share. We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of france need to respond. Frances is our oldest ally. The french people have stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States time and again and we want to be very clear that we stand together with them in the fight against terrorism and extremism. Paris itself represents the time less values of human progress. Those who think that they can terrorize the people of france or the values that they stand for are wrong. The American People draw strength from the french peoples commitment to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, were reminded in this time of tragedy that the bonds of liberty and fraternity are not only values that the french people care so deeply about, but they are values that we share. Those values are going to endure far beyond any act of terrorism or the hateful vision of those who perpetrated the crimes this evening. Were going to do whatever it takes to work with the french people and with nations around the world to bring these terrorists to justice and to go after any terrorist networks to go after our people. We dont yet know all the details of what has happened. We have been in contact with french officials to communicate our deepest condolences to the families of those who have been killed, to offer our prayers and thoughts to those who have been wounded. We have offered our full support to them. The situation is still unfol unfolding. I have chosen not to call president ulong at this time because my expectation is that hes very busy at the moment. I actually by coincidence was talking to him earlier today in preparation for the g20 meeting. But i am confident that ill be in direct communication with him in the next few days and well be coordinating in any way they think are helpful in the investigation of whats happened. This is a heartbreaking situation and obviously those of us here in the United States know what its like. Weve gone through these kinds of episodes ourselves. And whenever these kinds of attacks happened weve always been able to count on the french people to stand with us, they have been an extraordinary Counter Terrorism partner and we intent to be there with them in that same fashion. Im sure that in the days ahead well learn more about exactly what happened and my teams will make sure that we are in communication with the press to provide you accurate information. I dont want to speculate at this point in terms of who was responsible for this. It appears that there may still be live activity and dangers taking place as we speak and so until we know from french officials the situation is under control and we have more information about it, i dont want to speculate. Okay . Thank you very much. Question from reporter. You are listening to president barack obama commenting on the latest tragedy in paris, france that happened about 10 00 oclock paris time. At least 25 maybe 30 or even more people are dead and another 100 being held hostage at this time. The president calling this an attack on humanity, not just on the people of paris and vowing to do whatever the United States can to help in this situation. Saying we dont really know exactly what happened, what caused this. But multiple attacks happening and dozens dead and as you mentioned chris 100 people being held hostage at the very least right now. It is clear that this was a coordinated attack. At least three attacks explosions and shootings. At least three different locations. We understand a restaurant, a concert hall and outside a soccer game between france and germany where weve seen reports, ive seen it myself where you actually hear the explosions during the soccer match as the game is being played. So obviously a fluid situation still happening in paris, fran france. President obama calling this a heartbreaking situation and the United States standing together with france in terrorism and extremism.
