Septa pulled a third of its fleet because of what its calling significant structural defect. Not good at all. Fox 29 Joanne Pileggi is live at septa headquarters. Thank goodness they realized something was wrong. Reporter thats right. Lucy, it is clear that septa officials had no choice. They had to take the defective rail cars out of service immediately. The risk was just far too great. Now, rail commuters will have to make tough Choices Starting tuesday morning. Im have to get the bus to ride to work. Ill figure something out. Im not trying to think, about it now. Trying to enjoy my holiday off. Come tuesday morning, it will be a different story for septa rail riders. With close to a third of the trains out of service, it wont be busy as usual. It is with an abundance of caution in accordance with requirements all cars will remain out of service until the appropriate actions can be accomplished. That means the entire fleet of septas newest Passenger Rail cars 120 silver liner five are sidelined until repairs are made to cracks in the steel beams of korean made cars. With 1 3rd of our cars out of service, tuesday is the challenge. I heard theyre going to make adjustments. Of ill have to make changes told schedule accordingly. Hopefully i we only have to drive to work. If necessary, thats what ill do. Reporter septa engineers discovered the cracks after noticing some of the cars leaning to one side. So far, 95 percent of the silver liner five cars inspected have the defect. Worst case scenario, the cracks could have caused a high speed derailment. It can either be a design flaw or something that occurred in the manufacturing process. I e, materials and or the welding process. I rather them fix whats wrong and, you know, address the issue than to have and have us on a safe train. Reporter obviously they couldnt do that. Septa is working with the manufacturer to try to figure out how to make all of the of the repairs. Riders need to be prepared long lines, crowded trains starting tuesday. It happened around 5 00 this morning. Police say the victim died at the scene. So far, they have not named any suspects. In north Philadelphia Police are searching for a 20yearold man whos the suspect in another fatal shooting. They say he shot a 24yearold man in the chest and head last night on the 3500 block of north marshal street. Police raised that man to Temple University hospital. But he died. Investigators say it last time someone spotted the man theyre after was at 6th and ven in an go. In new york city, authorities now say a device that exploded in central park sending a teenager to the hospital was probably not designed to her anyone.
