Well take a look right now people continue to come out of the terminal here. You can see many of them out trying to make plans as to how theyll get home tonight. People coming out with luggage, suitcases everything they took on this cruise that basically did not happen. A lot of wary faces. Some of them happy. Most excited to be back here at home. And so this cruise ship the anthem of the sea pulled in here to new jersey just after 8 00 oclock tonight. It was a rough trip. I hate to call eight trip because they never made it to their destination what was the bahamas the ship left new jersey on saturday and sunday encountered a very bad storm that passengers described aster feig. They say it tossed them around tossed the boat around. Many people reported they fell on the ship furniture was moving everywhere. And they had no idea a lot of the passengers say that they were coming into a storm until they came in contact with 30foot waves. So very terrifying experience. They had to turn around and come back home and we talked to some of the first passengers to get off the ship tonight. Horrible. Horrible, horrible. I have to tell you it was extremely bad. Ive been in bad situations in my life. That was the worst. I dont scare easy. That scared me. I can honestly say id rather have captain crunch as the captain. He was bad. It was horrible. It was horrible. Whole trip was horrible. We got nowhere. Felt like we got lied to about what really happened. It was bad. They were going on a seven day cruise to the bahamas so a lot of them have flights out that arent obviously scheduled for today. A lot of them are from out of town. Theyve got to get transportation back home its getting late and so theyve been offered the opportunity to stay on board the ship another night just for safety purposes and because its so late but, again, a lot of mixed emotion here tonight some of the passengers are happy to be home. Some of them just wary, worn out, and again, you heard the kid say in the background lucy and iain hed have the rather have captain crunch as the captain. Im telling you, shawnette. Unbelievable. What he would like forget was a text message he got from brett two days after christmas that year. Ive been in an accident, and hurt his back and didnt think he was going to walk again and had to use emoticons with tears coming down. Snow boring accident on the day after christmas in 2014 left him permanently paralyzed from the chest down. Everything changed that night on a mountain in virginia. His athletic dreams were on hold. But the human spirit in brett had a different plan. I just remember spending a lot of time in the hospital and just like i got two choices here. I mean this is my life. I didnt see any other option. It was like i have choice to be miserable or not. But he needed some help. Im very good at coaching and getting the person are there. Former olympian terry jordan runs penn states ability athletics program. I think its just an inner drive that you dont give that either you got it or you dope. He wants to be the best no matter what sport it is. Just nine months aft leaving a Rehab Facility in atlanta without the use of his legs and soccer dreams behind him brett has pick himself up with new goals in front of him. Ranked 22nd in the world in wheelchair racing. He believes and hes right that he can be special in things that he does. Whoo the drive to be better than good lives in the best athletes. Feel a little blood pumping to the chest. Theres still a question he asks himself. Why me . You walk around campus and youre the one person in a wheelchair, and you know, you get looks from people. Might not be dirty look but theyre curious. You dont want that unwant attention sometimes. What happened in snowboarding accident didnt close a consider for brett, it opened a new one. How it lined up and everything after my injury just like say its a coincidence is not doing it justice. Tragedy took brett from the soccer field to a wheelchair but in so many ways it didnt change who he really is. This young man lives his life every day by an old expression, do what you can where you are with what you have. Teddy roosevelt saw that. I just saw that. It felt like it hit me and i related to it. For athletes and non athlet athletes, success is measured in different ways. Medals come and go. World records come and go. But the kind of imprint that theyll leave on elses life is far more important and thats what brett is going to do. I was meant for his path, whether i like it or not, but im just going to choose to embrace it. So its my life and i cant take it back so i can only go forwa forward. Brett hopes to compete in three marathons this year. Chicago, new york and boston. And while the summer para Olympic Games this september in rio may be too much to ask this fast remember hes only been in a wheelchair for nine months, i wouldnt bet against him right now. I asked him if he considers himself a roll model for people. He says no. Both of his coaches says hes and doesnt realize. Theres a little role model in brett for all of us. Hes humble and already world ranked. 22nd in the world and only been in that chair for eight, nine months. Amazing. Incredible. Inspirational. Heres look whats coming up in sports with howard eskin.
